What are some of your favorite atheist/agnostic songs and song lyrics? I love the theme song for the Atheist Experience podcast and Imagine. Wondering what else is out there.

I'm not one much lyrics, I'm more about the music.
I don't think Believer, or non-believer has anything to do with it.
Remember that a great deal of opera's, Symphonies, And other classical music was made from composers that were influenced by god.
Art, and Architecture follow into that catagory as well.

Tori Amos. "Do you need a woman to look after you...God, sometimes you just don't come through."

@orange_girl saw her in Cincinnati in the 90's. Top three shows. Madonna (three times), Tori, and I recently saw Childish Gambino...who took #3!!!

This is the first song that came to my mind. ?

Dear God by XTC is as powerful a statement as there is in my opinion.

Portugals the Mans-Modern Jesus
Its one of my favorite songs. “Don’t pray for us. We don’t need no modern jesus to roll with us. The only rule we need is never giving up. The only faith we have is faith in us.” I have always been the weirdo in my family because of how much I couldn’t get behind Christianity. This sums it up for me-we just need faith in ourselves.

Well, my favorites have already been posted, but here's another good one.

Hozier - Take Me To Church

I had no idea what that song was about. That is one of the saddest videos I've ever seen.

@CommonHuman
I haven't actually watched the video. Funny story though, first time I heard it was in the car with my daughter. It came on the radio and she commented something about how good it was. I groaned and made some snarky comment about it, thinking it was just another "god" song since I hadn't really been listening to the lyrics. she called me out "Are you actually even listening?"
Whoops, my bad. embarrassed 😉

Only the good die young - "Id rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints; the sinners are much more fun."

Superstition - "When you believe in things that you don't understand then you suffer; superstition ain't the way."

Jeff Buckleys version of Leonard Cohens Hallelujah "well maybe theres a god above, but all I've ever learned from Love, is how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya"

John Lennon's Imagine will always be my favorite. It's timeless and a classic. It also makes me giggle when christians sing along

Check out Dylan's "With god on our side"

Oh my name it ain't nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I was taught and brought up there
The laws abide
And that land that I live in
Has God on its side
Oh, the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh, the country was young
With God on its side
The Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War, too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I was made to memorize
With guns in their hands
And God on their side
The First World War, boys
It came and it went
The reason for fighting
I never did get
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side
The Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And then we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now, too
Have God on their side
I've learned to hate the Russians
All through my whole life
If another war comes
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side
But now we got weapons
Of chemical dust
If fire them, we're forced to
Then fire, them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side
Through many a dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ was
Betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.
So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
That if God's on our side
He'll stop the next war

@Deiter beat me to it, but...

Dear God by XTC

Dear God, hope you get the letter and I pray you can make it better down here
I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer
But all the people that you made in your image
See them starving on their feet 'Cause they don't get enough to eat from God
I can't believe in you

Dear God, sorry to disturb you but I feel that I should be heard loud and clear
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears
And all the people that you made in your image
See them fighting in the street 'Cause they can't make opinions meet about God
I can't believe in you

Did you make disease and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you? And the Devil too!

Dear God don't know if you noticed but Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book
And us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look
And all the people that you made in your image
Still believing that junk is true
Well I know it ain't, and so do you

Dear God
I can't believe in
I don't believe in
I won't believe in heaven or hell
No saints, no sinners, no devil as well
No pearly gates, no thorny crown
You're always letting us humans down
The wars you bring, the babes you drown Those lost at sea and never found
And it's the same the whole world 'round
The hurt I see helps to compound
The Father, Son and Holy Ghost Is just somebody's unholy hoax
And if you're up there you'll perceive
That my heart's here upon my sleeve
If there's one thing I don't believe in
It's you

Dear God

Imagine is my favorite.

These 3 are more overtly atheist but in most of there music the message is there if you listen. I had to miss the new album release party last night, I'm looking forward to hearing it.

One of my favorites! Tim Minchin--Thank You God

@maturin1919 I love the tone of the music. It's perfect.

Metallica:Leper Messiah

I love it because it's got such a happy vibe, like someone who is free from the burdens of blind faith:

1

Tim Minchin has a lot of good ones although his are for satire. “The pope song” “thank you god” “the good book” are 3 funny good jams.

He's great!

@AlanMargu have you heard “prejudice” song. Great anagram and jam.

A few lyrics I really like:

“You can choose from phantom fears
and kindness that can kill…”
—Freewill by Rush

“They say there's a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it's better but I say it ain't
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
The sinners are much more fun”
—Only the Good Die Young by Billy Joel
(Billy Joel has said more recently that this song isn't so much anti-religion as it's pro-lust, but I think the lyrics are pretty strongly anti-religion and that he's maybe trying to avoid offending believers. Regardless, I really like the entire song a lot.)

”Just focus on the sacrificial crucifixion
And have faith in its complete jurisdiction
It's the only way to measure if you're good or not
And when you're in a debate, just say to have faith
Because when up against logic
It's the only card you've got.”
—The Loophole by Garfunkel and Oates

Not an athiest song per say but it resonated with me. We are all made of stars by Moby.
