Do you believe that racism and hatred is taught in childhood? Or are some just born with it? Or possibly both?

Taught, no one is born that way.

As a primate supremacist I associate socially only with my fellow primates. I am not a hater. The other mammals are ok in their places but I certainly wouldn’t want my daughter to marry one of them.

I believe that there is an innate tendency for kinsmen to stick together. It’s the birds of a feather thing and it is neither good nor evil. It is nature’s way of preserving valuable genetic and cultural traits. At the same time nature likes to experiment, so there will be a bit of mixing along the edges. It might take a very long time for things to get sorted out, but eventually a new mixed population might emerge that is superior in surviving in a particular environment. I see evidence for that every week.

So far as racial hatred, that comes from fear, and fear comes from the thinking of untrue thoughts. There is nothing under the sun to fear. Every person alive is the culmination of a very long line of survivors and is logically due the utmost respect and love.

No one is born with an opinion, There is no mind developed until one recognizes their own self. And them compare this novel concept with that of others. IT is definitely taught. No way around this. We are all born with a brain that has yet to open shop. It does not know the rules such as do not poop in your pants, do not put hand in flame, All this is learned via experience of our own reality.

The idea of being born racist is as absurd as the idea of being born with original sin.

Racism and hatred are both taught in childhood very much the same way religion is taught. It is a learned behavior. I can detect it very quickly. A neighbor of mine said just this week about black people "look at all the millions we have spent trying to educate them." OK, who are "we" and how did it happen that "we" have spent millions? Whoever "they" are apparently they have nothing to do with their own education? The big problem here is that this white man fails to recognize that most black people are more educated than he is. Maybe he sees it and does not want to see it. His views were started by his parents early on and later by the people he found as his companions.

You put kids in a room of any color and nationality and they play together as they should. As they grow, their parents influence takes affect and then you see the changes. It is definitely learned behavior!

We are born innocent... As we get older, we mimic what we see. Hatred and racism will be around forever.

since there is no such thing as race except as a social construct, which is something learned and not innate (that's why it's called a construct), racism is not innate. fear of the "other" -- not sure. some say innate, others say it's learned, but early. but regardless of what chickens do, human babies play happily with one another without regard for skin color until some grownup or unfortunately educated peer gets ahold of them and tells them whom to hate.

g

That's it exactly.

Exactly. Look at all the different kinds of birds. Do we hate some and love others! Nope. They are just all birds. So why do it with people?

I think some people are born with low intelligence and limited ability when it comes to absorbing new stimuli. Racism and bigotry are a symptom of this.

People with limited capacity when it comes to absorbing new things will gravitate towards sameness and will shun and fear what they do not understand and have no ability to even attempt to understand. Nothing is more frightening to these people than differeing cultures and belief systems. It is a defense mechanism to hate what we fear. Racism and bigotry are born of the fight or flight response.

I firmly believe it is taught

You know what's weird? Chickens will gang up on a chicken that looks different from them. Weird but true. Sometimes they will kill it. I hope there is not something like that in us humans. It's so hard to know, isn't it, when kids are getting subtle (or not so subtle) racist messages from books, videos etc. from the very beginning? I started counting the numbers of female & non-white characters in my kids' books & videos when they were toddlers & even in the ones that seemed to have made a effort to be inclusive, the numbers did not reflect the true demographics here in the US. Mostly white & male.

& sadly, in the past few years we are really seeing parents openly teaching their kids very racist & hateful ideas & behaviors.
