I guess I’m trying to find a common thread with people on here that’s not necessarily faith based. I identify as atheist, humanist and a free thinker but it certainly doesn’t define me. I actually pay it very little thought. Am I alone in this? Is this site mainly populated by those who want to debate theories relating to their iconoclastic beliefs? If so..I may be in the wrong place. Just as much as I avoid answering my door to mormons, I really am not motivated to have debates around beliefs with people who I have no other background on, that’s why I became an atheist in the first place.

Theres a lot of talk of our lack of belief here for 2 reasons: it's the one thing most all of us have in common to certain degrees, and a lot of us are here in the first place because we have relatively few faithless friends in real life. in the case of many of us who are isolated in very religious communities or who were raised under an oppressive thumb of religion, it helps deprogram some of the brainwashing to have a place to vent about the ubiquitous influence of mythology on our politics etc. If your focus is on other topics theres plenty of that too, but like others have suggested youll probably have to find your other niches and favorite topics amongst the many groups we have, and if you can't find it, start your own group. If it does bother you severely to hear atheism mentioned often Id suggest getting involved with Universalist Unitarian churches or some hobby or community service that gives you a topic to focus on other than worldview.

...well put;after all there is the title!!!
There are numerous other sites that
promote dating- some are awash in religious
overtones.

I feel exactly the same way. I haven't read any of the books that are referred to and didn't know the names of many of the well known atheists before joining this site.
What I get out of it is the ability to have conversations or read conversations where nobody makes some sort of religious explanation for various life or world events, or offers up prayers, or automatically dismisses me because I'm not a believer.

I don't really give my atheism or humanism all that much thought ordinarily, but I live in a place where there are not only believers in religion but also a lot of what I'd call "woo" and I am happy to have found a place that is largely devoid of that.

Socializing with friends in real life, and on social media, I'm bombarded with irrational supernatural assertions which leave me wanting to roll my eyes and shake my head, but that's not polite, so I stay quiet and refresh my mind by reading posts on this site.

...totally agree/high pressure
sales people roil my blood.

you can see that we have lots of categories; only one of them is religion.

I think your first sentence says it all. It's like joining THIS.com and wondering why few people are talking about THAT.

Thanks for your input, but I joined because I thought it was a dating site first, and that those on the dating site weren’t religious. Most...in fact all non religious people I know don’t feel the need to tell people about being Athiests, agnostics or any other ist or ism. I am surprised is all, and as per your comments I can see that you are surprised that I’m surprised, so let’s call that an impass?

@Julesjah Well, when you out it that way, we're at less of an impasse! This site does have some misleading ads out there, and that's the reason I joined too! It took a bit to just dive into the social connection of it, but I can understand that some may not be okay with that shift. I do wish they'd advertise more appropriately.

So what do you want to get out of this?

I am not entirely certain that I really grasped the essence of your question, but it certainly gave me a good idea.

That’s ok, I am sure that I come across as ambiguous on the odd occasssion. Glad to have prompted you forward ?

@Julesjah perhaps you prompted me sideward rather than forward ... but that's still ok.

I think that it is rather normal that you don't give it much thought. Most people are like you even those who belong to a religion hence the frequent rituals prescribed by some religions. If the believer had the inner voice telling them several times per minute or per hour that they belong to a certain religion, there wouldn't exist the necessity to remind the believers with calls by the muezzin from the minaret or will the noise of bells from the belfry immitating the voice of gods.

I remember when my elder daughter asked me for permission to become a christian and her mother backing her request by saying "I believe in god too (god 2.0)" ... I could only reply "holy shit" ... At that time I had been in a relationship with my daughter's mother for 25 years and the question of any alligeance to any deity had never come up.

That’s really interesting. Thanks for sharing that ??

Have you taken the time to go through the Group list and join groups centered on interests and hobbies?
It doesn't seem that you have.

Ahhh, let’s not rush assumption as I have pursued said affiliations. I have also posted and will make further posts on time. Thank you for your interest and response my comments.

@Julesjah if that is true, then you are well aware that only a small portion of this site deals with religious arguments and your complaint isn't valid.

@SkotlandSkye oh, oh, oh,,, BUUUURRN.. LMAO ??
