I designed our house to be very efficient. It can run off grid indefinitely. A mid sized 5500W diesel generator running a half hour , two or three times a day will keep the fridges,freezers and water pumps charged. It can even run the microwave and Range oven when required. The wood stove will easily heat the house and water for washing dishes, clothes or humans. Propane camp stove and lanterns of course are always on hand too. I have enough diesel fuel to run for a year, and enough firewood for ten.

Fire up th eBBQ... there is a lot of frozen meat tht needs cooking.

I hope I will be livng in a place with colar energy by them.

Loot the grocery store for supples, load up on weapons and ammo, find the precious gasoline and transform myself into a shorter, balder version of Mad Max -- it's the Road Warrior apocalypse!

For quite a while I would have no way to know that the power would never come back on, since my connection to the news is only through devices that run on power. But, if I couldn't get cell phone service and there was no electricity, I would suspect a big problem.

Once I determined that the power would never come back on, which would mean that a major tragedy occurred:

• Try to acquire enough food for a few days
• Hope I have a full tank of gas
• Contact some good friends that are nearby
• Pack up supplies, like I would for a hunting trip, bringing tools and containers for water
• Drive to an area where I could hunt for my food
• Find water
• Find or build shelter
• Hunt for food
• Find other humans, so we could work together and start a division of labor society
• Start planning for building a new civilization

On the first day, I would lock my freezer and go about business as usual. If I found no power anywhere and the cellular network down, I would probably think it was a widespread blackout like what affected the northeast a few years ago. With no electricity to power communications, I'm not sure how long it would take me to get a clue that I was in an apocalyptic scenario.

Once I got the clue, I would go into apocalypse mode. I suppose I would start out trying to stay in my house and defend it against intruders. I have enough food to last for awhile. If people are relatively calm, I have a lot of skills that don't require electricity, and I could make myself useful. I have a charcoal forge, for example, and a lot of vintage hand tools. I more or less have a plan for converting my machines to run on hand or water power. I could be a real wizard who could figure out how to make things using Medieval technology, and smart warriors would do well to keep me alive and fed. If people aren't calm, I guess it's time to abandon most of the tools and head for the woods, where I will just have to do my best to survive off the land as a hunter/gatherer.

Breathe a huge sigh of relief.

To take this as real I would have to believe that it happened to everyone at the same time. In that case we all would have a lot of adjusting to do. If the power went out only for ME it might mean the bill needs paid or something is wrong with the equipment.

Well... I have a whole house generator and a 1,000 gallon propane tank buried in my side yard. With judicious use (and a full tank) it would keep me going about a month. In that time I would fabricate a gasifier unit to obtain wood gas to power the genset when the propane ran out. They built and used gasifiers a lot in WWII and FEMA published plans years ago as to how to build them. 1880's technology few people know about these days.

Even still... I wouldn't need gas as I have a river right behind me that could provide the turning power I need for the generator. If we were returned to the stone age... I am sure the county wouldn't mind me fabricating something.

An EMP (Natural or man-made) would probably have me working overtime. I'd have to break out my micro soldering station to replace fried electronics.

Still no power? I would probably band together with neighbors and wait for family and friends to roll in with what they have. With no power anywhere... Most people will die within the first year. The first to go are those that require medications to survive. The next part would be the slow starvation of the rest as all perishable food would rot within days or weeks. You want to see the zombies? Guess what... You'll see them then! With no supply chain to keep the stores stocked... It won't be pretty!

Celebrate! ? I’d head into the nearest National Forest and take a long hike.

Depends on what those around me did.. No longer have my own water supply, but a lot of implements of survival. Likely help my little community, as we returned to the stone age together ~

Get me and the family out of the city asap and steal a boat.

Go to bed when the sun goes down. Which is about 4:15 pm.
Eat very little. Ration food to cats and me.
Live in the city, so I’d double padlock my door.
My meds would run out, including my insulin.
So it looks pretty grim.

I take it moving to somewhere with power is not an option in this scenario. A planetwide blackout/EMP event. Clothing, water, and shelter aren’t going to be a problem short term but food might be. Might have to sell my body for a hamburger I guess. When the ground beef and neighborhood cats run out maybe I’ll take a walk in the woods with Mr. Mossberg and subtract myself from the remaining population. Insert Snickers commercial. “He gets very apocalyptic when he’s hungry.”

Well, I would take Carlin's word seriously and take it as the end of human civilization. I would flee to the nearest isolated island in the world (maybe the one on which that missionary priest got himself killed) and beg the primitive people to take me in as one of their own.
