I don't know that the government has any official position on the duration of human settlements in North America, but there are much older settlements.

Few people realize that European diseases devastated the Native populations in the Americas kill off 95-98% of the populations. The devastation was worst in heavily populated areas, so towns and cities wee pretty much wiped out, as as the main construction material was mostly wood, within 100 years there was little signs left for former cities as they just deteriorated.

When Europeans arrive in mass, they found fields perfect for agriculture because they had been clear by Nativesw many years earlier for growing crops.

Had disease not wiped out most of the naive populations, much of the U.S. (and all of the Americas) might still have been in native hands.

Shows a more sophisticated society also in order to build a structure of such a size.
