"All" atheists don't do anything, including celebrate Valentine's day. Like Xmas, I'm in if for the 50% off chocolate at Walgreens.

Who the hell cares what ALL of us Atheists are doing, lighten up, we're having fun. ♥

There isn't a person alive today who actually celebrates Valentine's day as a religious holiday. It's more of an obligatory capitalist holiday foisted upon us by 1-800 Flowers, Russell Stover and Hallmark.

We have too few holidays to celebrate already, why make one less. I'm not depending on Hallmark, making my own card.

I celebrate it as a contrived capitalist holiday where I have an excuse to eat chocolates, get roses, go out to dinner, and be pampered ...oh wait...I do that anyway...ha ha Happy Valentine's Day for whatever reasons you do or do not celebrate it!

Hi. I am definitely a happy atheist -I love Valentines Day - I don't celebrate it , I just love chocolate and the 50 % or more ! Discount on the lovely hearts full of lovely chocolate the week after.

One doesn't need to believe in a god to enjoy a tradition.
I still love the Holidays around Christmas, the lights trees etc.
I just put no weight to its religious background.

Just like Halloween, it's all about the candy!

To me, it’s a secular holiday.

I don't treat it as a holiday, religious or otherwise.
I don't recognize it at all.

It is a horrible Helladay. A money grab with all of the pressure on the men. I have been very fortunate in my life to be with women who feel the same. It is a money grab for florists, jewelers, candy makers,and card companies. I buy flowers because I want to, not because I am supposed to. I tell someone I love them daily because I want to. I don't need a card with a sentiment written by someone I don't know printed on it. That is just silly.

Holidays, no matter their origins, mark special places in our lives, like a bookmark in a favorite novel. I used to shy away from holidays when I learned of their origins. But now I just find reason to celebrate them all.

It's a Hallmark holiday. Consumerism is our new religion, so it is just another feast day like Christmas, Easter and halloween

I never associated Valentine's day with any religion myself. But hey , if you don't like the day - just ignore.

Regardless of the supposed reason for Valentine's Day - I have never associated it with any religion Christian or otherwise. It has always just been a "sweet" day...pun intended. So Happy Valentine's Day anyway. I will ask the Universe for both of us to have the Law of Attraction lean in our today!

Valentine's Day has become - in my estimation - quite the commercial enterprise supported by the card companies, florists, and jewelers. However, it is a good excuse to say "I love you" to anyone you want to show affection. I have (for the last few years since becoming single) spent VD with lady friends, having a fun dinner at my house and talking about just about everything BUT love and cupid! It's just another day, but you don't dare go out for a meal or a movie, as there are zillions of starry-eyed romantics celebrating the day. It's never been a christian holiday for me any more than have been christmas (Santa Claus and celebrating family) or easter (celebrating spring and baby animals, and family). It is a matter of perspective and choice!

Never mind Valentine's Day, what about Christmas. Most of us can detach the religious aspects of events and still enjoy it for what it is. Hell, I can't stay in bed all day on Sunday.

As far as I'm aware, Valentines day along with Christmas and many other "christian" festivals were adopted by the christian religion because it was easier than trying to stamp them out of existence.

how do you know ALL of us celebrate it?

do we have to eschew everything with religious origins even if they no longer have religious overtones? (we don't have to buy cards to celebrate.) what makes you think that someone who goes out with you on v-day isn't going out with you for your fabulous brain? lots of assumptions there!

"why all you atheists celebrate Valentine's Day?" That's a broad and no offense, inaccurate generalization. I am a non-theist and I don't buy into any of it. I don't celebrate Valentine's day or wear a pink shirt day or love your dog day or love a bird day or wear jeans day or be thankful that you can crap day or be thankful the mother-in-law is dead day or any of that nonsense. That being said, it's possible to celebrate a date and not celebrate the religious history behind it. I celebrate Christmas because it's a time for my family to come together but I don't celebrate "Christ". I celebrate Easter but only because I enjoy seeing the grand kids take part in the easter egg hunt. I even bow my head when others at the table are saying grace - they don't know what the hell I am thinking - they're not mind readers and for the most part I"m thinking that I can't wait to dig in.
