Want to know why we have an Electoral College? At least one
racist politician was honest about it.

To the best of my recollection the Electoral College was established so the Southern States would have equal representation, due to the fact that much of their population were slaves and only counted as 3/5 of a person for representation purposes.

Like anyone who makes less than a $1 million has a voice in our government.

At least not so overpowering as now. I always thought it was a republican way to keep my vote from counting and I'm white.

There are good reasons for the electoral college. To understand you have to remember that we are a federation of states. That fact is often overlooked, but in our nation the states have final authority. At any time the states have it within their power to come together in a convention and modify the constitution in any way they please. They can abolish the constitution or they can disband if they want to.

The Union was created by agreement among the colonies. Provisions were made so that each state would have a voice and the country would not be dominated by one or two populous areas. One provision is that each state has two senators regardless of population, and the electoral college is another provision.

The electoral college prevents the densely populated coastal areas from imposing radical laws that reflect urban cultural values but are detested by the country at large. I think the country would simply collapse or erupt into civil war if the political left had total control. Such things as radical environmental laws, reparations for slavery, confiscation of firearms, extremely high taxes and imposition of federal control over every aspect of life are simply not acceptable to Americans across the countryside.

Compare with the EU. Europeans do not vote at all for the president. National heads of state nominate a candidate and the European Parliament votes. Suppose the president were elected by popular vote. Germany, being the most populous nation, would control every election and would have enormous power to shape EU policies to its benefit. How long would the smaller nations stay in such a union?

Nah, it's to protect white people, slave owners, red states, and Republicans. Too bad you and the creators of the EC don't believe that all people are created equal. Or, it's just that some people, those in red states, are more equal than others.

Your argument doesn’t hold up. The EU is a group of countries, that’s like comparing it to NAFTA. Try comparing the US to Canada, it’s also a parliamentary system but one where the smaller provinces can be heard and a third party can thrive.

Yes, I agree historically with what you have written. A happy note: the states are about halfway to the amount they need to ratify this archaic practice (in my opinion), but it's not going to happen anytime soon. Fear (of exactly what you have written) will prevent the less populated states from going down this road. It's a shame (again, my opinion).

Those people that are called "white" people are still the majority therefore, they'd still have a major voice. His problem, i would guess, is that in his opinion, the "right kind" of white people won't have a say. That's how racist and Nazis satisfy their fear and ignorance.

The electoral college is directly a legacy of the institution of slavery. Slave states wanted to count slave bodies for population credit but without actually letting them participate in voting, of course.

Of course, women and poor white men didn't get to vote, either.

Just hyperbole scare tactics and nothing more and that is what the conservative GOP exists on.
