Today I tried to give my mother advice, and she said that the bible says that one should not listen to wicked ones! Terrible to feel the prejudice of my blood! Whom I love the most.

If anyone close to me told me they consider me to be wicked, my response would be swift and clear: "Don't worry, you won't have to endure my wickedness anymore. This is the last you'll see of me or hear from me. I love you, and I wish you well, but I won't be demonized by you. If you have a change of heart and decide to treat me with the dignity I deserve, you know how to get in touch with me." I figure one of two things would happen: either they would decide that they want me in their life and would reconsider their position (or at least how they express it), or they would maintain that I'm wicked in which case it's probably for the best that we part ways. I don't want to be a part of someone's life if they despise me; that does neither of us any good. I'm not suggesting that this is the tack you should take with your mother, only that it's how I would respond in similar circumstances.

I didn't even dignify my family's shitty behavior toward me by giving them a good-bye speech. I just cut the cord when I got tired of their constant abuse. Life is too short to waste any energy on hateful people - even if they happen to share 50% of my DNA.

That's exactly how I would respond if anyone in my family called me wicked. Piratefish is right, life is too short to waste on hateful people.

@Resserts Outstanding comment. You cannot be afraid to cut the chord . . . . been there, done that.

There is not one sentence in the Bible that encourages people to think for themselves. Bertrand Russell said: "So far as I can remember, there is not one word in the Gospels in praise of intelligence." Furthermore, there is a distinct lack of humour.

That is because religion is just a power and control mechanism to keep the masses inline. It is also just another way for people to scam other people of their money with tithes. I wonder what would happen if an Irreligious "church" popped up around the world for people that didn't believe.

When it comes to the bible you're up against a master. Patience and understanding and accepting that her enlightenment may never come about. Aren't you glad you're YOU!

I am saddened by prejudice, especially in my family. I'm happy because of my character.

painful. Blood is the toughest of all betrayals.

I'm sorry she said that to you. That was beyond wrong of her and no one deserves that. I don't see how anyone could speak to their own child that way but religious people are often delusional in their faith.

5

How unfortunate for both of you. My mother does not understand and is afraid for ‘my soul’ but she accepts me regardless.
Wish you much love and support.
We have your back!

Sorry you're going through this. I made peace with the fact that my family hates me a long time ago. You do not need to subject yourself to this kind of abuse.

I know what I bring to the table, so believe me when I say I don't mind eating alone if I have to.

I feel sorry for you and your unfortunate circumstances.A good example of the detrimental effects of religious brainwashing in that it can actually turn a mother against her child. My father believes in a god but is not religious.I am fortunate in that he excepts my non belief

I never came out openly as an atheist until both my mother and father were dead as mother was very religious and she was still a great mother.

4

Don't worry, many parents don't need religion for an excuse to be rude and rejecting of their children. Your love is irrelevant to your mom's behavior but of course it still hurts. I realized as a baby that my mom was incapable of hugging, touching, or showing physical affection for me, and she kept anyone else from picking me up either, declaring that she didn't believe in baby-sitters.

She was religious also, but would have been that way no matter what.

4

At least your mother still speaks to you.

Mine doesn't speak to me either, but not religious reasons

Yes she speaks, I believe she hopes to convert me. Because I do not like to argue about it, I always have respect to be respected.

Mine is now dead. Stopped years prior to that though, partially because of religion.

I personally have Rid myself of those Toxic people in my life. I now have "family" that can see that toxic crap and have done the same. Take good care of yourself please. 🙂

3

Do what you have control on....... Don't pass it on to your children.

3

I’m sorry, I know how that feels. My mother condescends, undermines, and dismisses me with her religion often and fails to listen to me to her own peril and that of the family. Not much we can do other than keep their opinions and influence beyond arms distance.

3

That is pretty harsh.

If I relied on my family for guidance, I would likely be a child molester, child abuser, a religio-nazi, and a racist. Fuck family . . . . they are not worth my time, nor my peace of mind.
.
On a more humorous note, if I were to make that smart ass observation, I would have told her, "Well, obviously you have failed in that endeavor, given that you responded."

Cripes, I must be your brother!

3

As Sam Harris said, "to get good people to do evil things, that takes religion". Your mother is doing all she knows to do to "shock" you back into the fold. Forgive her, for she knows not what she does.

Also, don't give her unsolicited advice in the future.

Religion causes trouble

Religion poison's everything.....

Christ wasn't kidding when he said he came to divide even family members from each other.

I don't think the Christ of the Gospels really existed but I do think those writers who put these words into the guy's mouth believed they were living in the last days and never expected such dreadful domestic dysfunction to continue for 2000 years.

3

Sad. It does add truth to my observations: "Religion tends to dumb people down"

2

Let that generation go in piece

2

Wow that is messed up I'm sorry

2

So sorry. That must be awful.

2

Well, shit 😕

2

How cruel

2

I'm so sorry. It's terrible and sad when difference of world-view divides people, especially family.
