50 years on, would the film industry make Midnight Cowboy? A film about failure and friendship against an unforgiving backdrop. Is it too dark for the easily offended C21st?

Midnight Cowboy received an "X" rating when it first came out (the first and only X-rated film to win an Oscar for Best Picture), so it was pretty controversial in its day; today I don't think anyone would blink. But its story and themes are timeless.

Midnight Cowboy was more groundbreaking in its day, but, yes it would get made today, if someone saw a market.

What does "C21st" stand for? I speak English, not Acronym.

Abbreviation for 21st century

@Geoffrey51

I never would have guessed that. Use English, please.

@LiterateHiker it’s pretty standard abbreviation all over the place. Maybe not in USA. It’s like Xtian for Christian. Just saves tapping so much. No different to LOL and IMHO etc!

@Geoffrey51 we use all sorts of shortcuts to save time, text costs, etc. I help my hubby keep up with a list of the lastest..lol..CUL8R
