Is anyone else as scared as I am about global warming? I am seeing some very alarming articles recently predicting 80% annillation of the population in 31 years and irreversible path to this if not corrected in 5 years. Other articles about melting ice caps 70 years faster than originally thought and greenland losing billions of gallons of ice in a day. Efforts by scientist to block the sun in an attempt to cool the planet. Other ideas such as blocking the sun at the poles to mimic the sun's reflection of the polar ice caps which are currently melting away. Other articles about the methane gas trapped in permafrost which is melting and will release it into the atmosphere...causing an accelerated warming. My son is 2 years old. This seriously keeps me up at night and is hard for me to shake. I believe it all. The worst part is literally no one cares.

Absolutely scared 😨

Yeah, me too. I tell people that I am an Atheist and a bit of a nihilist -- I see no ultimate meaning or very long term future for the human race.

But that said, I never imagined that I might live to see the serious start of the end. I constantly wonder what people are thinking about the fates of their children. 😪

We live within an era control by those, the wealthy and their corporations who feel profit and control over us is more important than the environment!

They feel throwing money at any issue or event can solve all those problems!

When you remove the genie from the bottle, how do you reinsert a bloated swollen mass that has out grown and is multiplying faster than space that incrusted it in the first place?

You can not!

It may be that the reason we haven’t encountered other intelligent life (aside from the deep space and time problem) is that life forms that evolve are so aggressive that they end up using all of the natural resources of their planet and end up killing all life there.

Sorry to tell you this, but we are still apes although we have turned into a runaway species on this planet. We will probably eventually make the commons unlivable and force our planet into the Venus syndrome killing all life here.

If I had kids I'd be worried. As it is, the worse will probably happen when I'm gone.

Gareth Level 7 June 23, 2019

@Allamanda As opposed to bringing children into an already overcrowded planet? Maybe it's a matter of viewpoint.

@Allamanda Well, I assume you had a choice and knew the likely consequences, yes. I also assumed that you didn't adopt your kids. But thanks for your condemnation anyway; it must be nice to have such a talent in judgement.

@Allamanda Yours or mine?

Sorry. Worked on a simple climate model for a local airport that has about 118 years of ok weather data going back to 1900. Found a similar signal in the data as NASA. Used 1st order regression models/equations that can be rather straight forward.one signal was a temperature inflection about 1958/59. Where there was a reduction of sd measures and an improvement in r value. If I used the full data set without regard for the inflection point temperatures indicated a slow drop, with with the inflection there was a stroge change in historical behavior. Ran projections out a few hundred years just to see where we might be headed. Model came back with the loss of one months freezing weather about 2019, and Venus like conditions about about 2100. Looked at rainfall projections that indicated drought and seasonal changes in rainfall from norms. One interesting result came out of the monthly models tracking the temoeratures over future years. The one run I did indicated a huge change in temperatures over time with energy held in the atmishere for longer times till Earth's orbit switch's between winter and Sumner. I think indicating immense energy available to storns latter and latter in year till earth can dump waste heat back to space. The earth as a heat engine could roar just can't fantom the details. Best I got. Have not had time to finish and cleanup my code for the models for a few years now, damn work and practical issues..don't lose faith in your good sense..

1

Not scared , concerned slightly. If the climate continues to change as predicted by the models people will act. It will take something catastrophic and obvious to all. What form that will take I do not know. Rest assured however that the owners of the world will blow us all to shit before they change their lifestyle.
Then we will be dead. No need to worry or be scared. Be optimistic😊

3

I have a 2 year old grandson and I wonder what sort of world he will live in.
Some parts of the higher and lower latitudes may even have better weather and growing conditions but with possible wars over water and millions more refugees in the world it's going to be a scary place.

6

I think the EPA was doing good work until POS45 , started reversing laws that were in place to protect the future . Climate change does exist , and flooding in both Florida and Texas in recent years has proven that . And it's going to get worse .

2

Yes, I am terrified. I think governments are just going to have to be very firm, no more single use plastic, no unnecessary air travel, hugely improve rail and public transport. Then encourage repopulation of bees, fish etc. We can do it but not until the population stops seeing this as lead by a fringe group of dreadlocked hippies and start realising this is REAL.

Amisja Level 8 June 23, 2019

@OwlInASack Oh absolutely. Some parts of central US are already suffering extreme climate change and lack of water. Always hits the poorest first

@Amisja Actually the central US has had too much rain this year, farmers are not able to plant crops because it is too wet. We are experiencing a super el nino these last four years because of the heating up of the Pacific ocean.

A huge problem will occur as the ocean currents such as the Gulf Stream change because of the warming of the oceans. Europe will have colder winters while Siberia will become warmer releasing huge deposits of methane gas that will further exacerbate AGW.

@DaveSchumacher central America...my apologies

1

My son is 12 and I too worry about it. I've told him that if I were him I'd consider not having any children. The way I see it is the majority of age group 50+ are either in denial or don't see it as their problem.

1

It's almost to hard to think about realistically. It's too big.. I've got a 15 and 11 year old and can't really think about them having children without it being a part of that. I'm also planning investing in a few cases of emergency food when I get my tax refund. Lots of worry about the corn crop this year. Will be interesting to see if that type of stuff starts to seriously affect food prices.

MsAl Level 8 June 23, 2019

I feel like its our own kids and not grandkids that will face this. Its closer than we think...

@Lauraleigh39 Yes and even us ourselves. It's the fact that I don't think grandkids are something I could think about having because it is here.

1

I was agnostic about AGW until I read James Hanson's book, "The Storms of My Grandchildren". I have two brothers who are pretty sharp guys, one is an engineer who thinks that we can't stop it. The other is a commercial builder who thinks that we will develop systems to sequester co2 in large enough amounts to turn the problem around. I don't know if we can stop it, but I suspect we will not be able to.

You are right that we are not doing anything about it. The US should be a leader but we only lead in exacerbating the problem by producing more fossil fuel. In second and third world countries as people pull themselves out of poverty the first things they want is a car and A/C.

In reality it is all potentiate in all probability!

2

That's an improvement, 31 years. I thought the deadline was 12 years......... (Yes, sarcasm). The serious comment is, what do YOU do to protect the environment. If each and everyone do diligence then things will get better. How many kids we have, what car do we drive, how do we drive it, how much waste do we create, how much energy do we waste, how much water do we polute, what type of detergent do we buy. There are tons and tons of things we can do to help. If I can change one person mind set to be more proactive on how they conduct their life (don't leave lights on for instance) then we will turn things around. If we keep expecting it is someone else job ( like politicians fixing climate change for instance) then we must prepare for the consequences. It's on us, not on them. That's the type of mentality that we need to spread.

The same people who want us to take drastic measures to stop global warming also favor increased immigration and oppose nuclear power which has zero carbon emissions which doesn’t make any sense as the number one cause of co2 emissions is to many people. If we are so concerned about co2 causing global warming why in the hell did we stop building nuclear power plants? Also why do we still allow so much immigration?

You ever hear of a place called the Rust Belt. Take a look at what happens to a plant/factory after it has closed. Just sits there. The good corporate people that ran the place went to Indonesia and keep going with the $$ operations. That's what will happen with Nuclear Waste which has to be looked after for almost an eternity (in a human time frame) Diggy, diggy, diggy, diggy, diggy.

@Allamanda,@backwardsman, @Croebheir Japan and Hungary both have zero population growth and seem to be doing just fine. Problems with nuclear power have been few and far between so it is definitely a viable power option. You liberal’s and your looney ideas are the ones driving this planet to extinction.

@Trajan61 Long term care for Nuke waste. That's dangerous. You are whack.

@Croebheir You are definitely wacko.

2

I’ll be fine. I have air conditioning.

1

I do worry about our scion. It's not getting any better with the $$ and greeders. Though I do care, but am insignificant in the power structure. It's serious. It's happening right before our very eyes. Oh woe is us.

Global warming is pseudo-scientific nonsense. There is good reason to be concerned about global cooling due to lack of sunspot activity. But the extra CO2 in the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels aids agriculture, and should help us survive the cold decades ahead. [nasa.gov].

Get some sleep. The primary danger to humanity remains nuclear war, and we've been living with that for my entire long life. Climate change of whatever kind we will survive.

2

Why worry? global warming is going to continue and little will be done to stop it. Even if the amount of CO2, methane etc is halved per head of population it is irrelevant, as the population will soon be doubled to 15billion.
The only thing that will stop global warming is a rapid decline in world human population and that is unlikely to be orchestrated by governments. Once the earth becomes inhospitable to humans - too little fresh water, air becomes unbreathable, food can not be grown, etc - whichever happens, humanity will decline and some other species will come to dominate the earth, or perhaps the remaining humans will relearn how to live with the planet without raping it every day

2

I had an exceptionally bad childhood, and as a result, did not have any illusions about just how bad the world could be. I never wanted children because I did not want to drag anyone into a world that is clearly FUBAR, and the older I got the more I saw that convinced me of the rightness of that mode of thinking. Yes there is also a great deal of beauty in the world, but some of it is illusion. We have political leaders who deny it all, and at the same time are trying to block the sun . . . . they know, but their avarice will not allow them to stop.
Unfortunately, it is not global warning that I see as the greatest danger, although with no doubt, it is certainly a great danger. Our greatest danger is those who put us in this situation, and the weapons that they have on hand, nuclear weapons. Scientists have said that just a small conflict between two small countries, for example, India and Pakistan, could cause the demise of the human race, and I see no reasons to disregard that idea.
What is happening now is the world is over-populated, and our government is trying to conquer as much territory as possible for the resources that these territories have. No doubt their ultimate goal is world domination, but even if they were to accomplish that, it would not stop what is clearly in motion. The more likely scenario though is that some nation will come to the realization that it has no way out, and being cornered, will let loose with all its nuclear weapons, and humanity will be wiped out. I no longer think that it is a question of IF, but a question of WHEN.
Either way, there are two huge threats to human existence that have been poo-pooed for so long that humans have become complacent and eventually it will all catch up to them. There are no words that one could or should say to comfort those who come to this realization, because it is to late, that water is under the bridge already, it is what it is. Life is ephemeral, and no matter what your age, background, social status, it can be gone in an instant, there are no guarantees, promises, or even rights to it.
You should never stop fighting a behemoth simply because you expect it to trample you into the dust, you fight anyway, and this is the behemoth of our age. The mark of courage is not to turn away and run, it is to run headlong into the fray and oppose this behemoth in whatever way possible. It is simply the absurdity of existence.

It doesn’t keep me awake at night but it does bother me. I try to do what I can as an individual but until corporations and countries make changes global warming will continue.

1

A large number of people worrying themselves sick about an imaginary danger; it is mind boggling! Also out of my control, so I will just enjoy life the best I can.

1

Where are you getting your information?

I would like to know as well. I’m totally on board with global warming concerns
But ‘billions of gallons a day’?
That seems a bit exaggerated

‘No one cares’?
That’s an exaggeration as well

I’d be interested in seeing the articles you’re reading. They may be extremist posting false information to help
Push along an agenda.

Again, I’m on board with making drastic changes to fix the problems we have created but being ‘chicken little’ is t going to help.

Please post your sources I’d like to read up.
I’ve searched the statistics you’ve posted and didn’t get any hits.

No I don’t lose sleep over it
Most things we are doing won’t make much of a difference. Without a very aggressive stance things are going to get very bad, although the timeline you’ve suggested is not one I’ve read about.

The vision into changes are too short sited in my opinion. Metal drinking straws? Banning plastic bags? Reducing emissions?
That’s all just child play.
We need to stop human reproduction and stop all fuel powered motor vehicles to even begin making a dent.

So, we will have to learn to adjust and hopefully tech knowledge will save the human race.
But no I’m not going to lose sleep over it.
If we die we die.

2

Absolutely. It is the greatest existential threat we have ever faced.

This is the most far-reaching and critical issue in our lives so I'd be glad to share some personal thoughts to a fellow non-believer.

I'm 75 so I don't have to long to live anyway. It's a lot worse for teenagers.

At least I don't have to worry about heaven and hell nonsense. God's wrath is bound to fall on the corporate oligarchs that have controlled culture and caused this insatiable over-consumption of our wonderful planet.

Most of them, like Donald Trump Jr, have led really cushy lives, so they'll be losing a lot more than I will. Their gated communities and underground bunkers in the central mountains won't do them a bit of good when the aftereffects of climate change play out. With arable land deteriorated, forest fires, few animals except for rats and roaches -- what would be the sense of staying alive?

They'll suffer a lot more than I will because my life is and has been pretty austere anyway, living paycheck to paycheck.

As a retired biology teacher I feel especially sorry for the animals. They were the truly innocent and Christ-like. What an irony! A wild boar in the Congo Jungle has more in common with Jesus than the super rich corporate Machiavellian schemers and manipulators. In my book I recount the death of a baby elephant in Tanzania, forced to migrate at a two months – after two years in the womb – because of human encroachment.

(This is the most important issue in our lives. I could go on and on but rather not in deference to your time and space. My book, Saving Gaia, gives some insight why this horror is happening and what needs to be done. It's all a matter of brain-washing and mind control. God bless George Orwell who warned us about it (Ingsoc, rule by tyrannical oligarchs) 70 years ago.
