The food is very expensive! Even buying food from the grocery and preparing it yourself is expensive.

Other than that, it will be a trip of a lifetime! The country is small so seeing everything is fairly easy...the people are friendly and will tell you odd stories about their country, like "community cars"...people leave their keys in their cars for anyone to borrow!

Have fun and post pictures...be sure to bring waterproof shoes...the land gets boggy and wet...they use newspaper in their shoes to help with this...

Reindeer meat does not taste like chicken...

@thinktwice what's it taste like?

@Bigwavedave gamey...like deer... 🙂

And interestingly enough, hot dogs seem to be something they do really well.

Though I doubt it tops the scenery.

I would do one of the longer hikes and get to some of the more remote places where it is not crowded, but that's just knowing your abilities.

Have a great time.

Be polite and avoid eating the shark meat.
Take lots of money and enjoy the daylight, it gets dark about August this time of year.
Buy your maximum amount of alcohol in duty free before going, they like whisky, but drink vodka.
Always use first names, never family names.
DO NOT TIP, IT'S INSULTING!
Remember, it like almost all civilised countries is metric. Learn the metric system and Celesius.
Don't make fun of Trolls, many there believe in them, although internet trolls are fair game.
Do not bring firearms, meat or most other foods.
The drink a lot of Coke.
Say 'Hallo', many speak English, and smile.
Beware of the Katla Volcano, its due to go bang at any moment and throw us into a mini ice age.

@ sofabeast . Thanks for the reminders!

get out of the tourist areas and into residential areas - you can eat well at a reasonable price

@shadowamicus. We will we are circumnavigating the island so should see alot...

@Bigwavedave and don't buy flowers - I bought a bunch of roses for my wifes birthday while there - came in at £75 on the credit card - definitely need to watch what and where you buy most stuff in Iceland ...

Be prepared to have your breath taken away by the country's beauty, and ready yourself for the enormous hole that's going to appear in your bank account.

@jeni well the hotel and airfare is paid for already ..as well as the car rental. So gas and food and drinks?

@Bigwavedave Everything. You'll pay the equivalent of around US$9 for a US gallon of gasoline (measured in litres in Iceland, of course). Alcoholic drinks are very highly taxed throughout Scandinavia - if you want a beer (usually sold by the 500ml glass, which is almost a pint) you'll pay the equivalent of about $11.

It's worth it, though. The Icelandic government put all those tax krona to good use, which is why the Icelandic people don't mind being so highly taxed - and the country is all the better for it.

@Jnei wow well I am splitting the gas costs . I imagine we are going over 1000 miles so. I can manage . Thankfully I drink vodka .

@Bigwavedave Roughly $60 for something that'd be $25 in the US (or £20 here)!

@Jnei ah well I'm committed. And you have a lovely art collection by the way!

@Bigwavedave I'm saving up for the originals - which means no more holidays in Iceland! You'll enjoy it, though - it's worth it!
