I bought a cedar chest at a local thrift store and it is missing some veneer (no, that is not what this post is about). As I was picking up the chest, a man was inquiring about a couch; he wanted to know if it were leather because he wanted to cover a chest with leather.

Since he was a "refinisher," I asked him where I might find veneer. Before he could answer, the young man who was loading my chest said, "Try Hobby Lobby."

I replied, "I do not shop at Hobby Lobby."

The man wanting the leather laughed uproariously and asked, "What are you, an atheist?"

I replied, "As a matter of fact, I am."

The look of incredulity on his face expressed more than words could; he expected me to protest, "NO! I AM NOT AN ATHEIST." I thought his eyes were going to bug out of his head.

He stood for a second, speechless, and then asked, "Let me ask you one thing: do you believe in the devil?" The question was inane, of course.

"No."

"At least you're honest," he replied.

He wanted to engage in a debate but I was not interested. The chest was loaded and I drove away.

People read into other what they want them to be; he assumed that I was Christian because I was friendly. Atheists are not friendly, ya know: they are gloomy and bitter and wear the Mark of Cain on their foreheads (mine is covered by my bangs).

Cedar chest: $60.

The look on the man's face: Priceless.

My favorite inane question from a believer:
}But, but...where will you spend eternity?

Me}Same place you will. (Unspoken: Dead. We will all be dead!)

I have used this many times over the years

This is great

Oh, I love this! And yeah, I don't shop at Hobby Lobby, either. And neither do I eat at Chik-fil-a. Although I do have to give Chik-fil-a a little bit of credit--in the aftermath of the Orlando shooting at the gay nightclub, Chik-fil-a provided free food to survivors and grieving family and loved ones.

ChiKKKfilthy A is Duck Dynasty with wafflefries

Good story. When they ask me if I believe in the devil I am quick to point out that god and the devil come out of the same book.

I'm surprised he knew that Hobby Lobby is controversial and why. So, he knew that by piping in and suggesting you shop there, he was voicing his support for that corporation. Good that you spoke up and voiced your opposition. More people need to be proud and out - and speak up - to show there are more of us than many think. Many of us are nice older folks - often mistaken for "nice Christians" and it's time we break the stereotype that all nice people are religious.

Huh, so what I thought were just wrinkles from age are really the mark of Cain on my forehead? I'll be damned.

Okay, so "no" to the God thing and "no" to the devil worship, but what about dining on babies? What about the blood orgies?!

@Gwendolyn2018 I guess it's just tofu babies and regular orgies from now on… gotta make do with what you've got, I suppose.

@resserts Impossible! tm babies... or Beyond tm babies 😛

@Gwendolyn2018 True. Ah, well… at least the orgies are still pretty good.

Nice story, but I really like to talk about veneers!

@Gwendolyn2018
Try Rockler.com or Woodcraft.com - they have lots of veneers for sale online, as well as tools and information about its application.

lol what a doofus, eh?

i never understood, though, why the mark of cain was thought to be a bad thing. in the myth called genesis, god doesn't kill cain; he tells him to go get lost. cain says he is afraid someone will punish him for his crime. god gives him a mark to PROTECT him. so people talk about that sort of backwards, don't they? if they bother. i myself only mention cain when he comes up in trivial pursuit, or, well, here lol

g

@Gwendolyn2018 i read that a few times, but not recently (bad eyes now). i don't remember that part. thanks for reminding me!

I'm interested in his inane question. Did he seriously think that as an atheist you must believe in, and probably worship, the devil?
That's beyond inanity. He's massively ignorant and not a little bit foolish.😂

Edit -- Additional: It's a shame that you didn't have time to explore the Hobby Lobby angle with him.

I get an image of a statement -- 'I don't believe in God, but I do spend a lot of my energy opposing evil'. Lol -- twirls moustache.

@NoPlanetB hello children of Satan , who is your mommy ? 😂😂🙌 yes I am !😂😂😂😂

What about faeries? You at least believe in faeries, right?

to quote Mr. Burns "excellent" and a large lumber yard should be able to help you with the veneer. 😉

@Gwendolyn2018 yeah, sad but true

3

Love love love when that happens! Good on you for killing him with some truth!

I keep seeing more and more the people and the stories of the Bible are not true. No exodus, no Noah’s ark, no Moses, maybe no Jesus. No evidence. How can anyone believe the Devil or anything else that’s in the Bible.

Tell me about Hobby Lobby, I have no idea about the store. I don't live in the US. Why won't you shop there?

The business owners are xtians who enforce their belief on their employees, including health insurance that doesnt cover birth control or pregnancy termination.. similar to another chain in the US, Chik-fil-a, they use some of their profits as business owners, to fund religious causes and "anti-gay/woman/whatever they think isnt xtian". Dominos Pizza is another big corp that does this, though not as brutal towards their employees.

@MarkiusMahamius I guess Dominos is a world wide organisation. We have them here in Australia but they do not enforce their beliefs on their employees. I think there would be an outcry if they did. It is a franchise and I cannot imagine the franchisee caring about religion, they just care about the profits.

@Jolanta I think the issue with Dominos is simply how they choose to spend their money. THey are verypro-life/anti choice

@Jolanta also heres another list [businessinsider.com] sorry the page loads veryslowly

Quite an encounter. You did a good job hiding your horns. 👿 I’m bald and ethnic Jewish so I have to wear a hat 🎩. I do admire your patience. 👍 Well done.

@Gwendolyn2018 With your long hair it must look like a bee 🐝 hive

2

This made me chuckle! Thanks!!
There are many places I won't shop/eat at: Hobby Lobby, Chick-fil-a, Jimmy Johns, Wal-mart. I always say do what makes you happy. Not supporting these businesses makes makes me happy.

Jimmy John Jaguar murderer with high powered rifle destroys the life of innocent species then slices up the dead and call it sandwich....most repulsive fraud corporation for geebush jeehobah ghostholes on earth

2

Why on earth do idiot religious folk always think that if you do not believe in God you must worship the devil? Are they really that thick?
It's like saying "I don't drive a car," and the immediate response being "Oh you must drive a van then" and when you say no and that you simply don't drive, they look baffled and say they don't believe you.

@Gwendolyn2018 Precisely

2

I will not shop there, either. Good for you speaking honestly in the face of someone who obviously does not understand reality....

@Gwendolyn2018 yup like creationism is an alternate "theory"....these theocrat cult dittoheads are afraid of facts and live only in the world of polluting the planet for profits believing anything preachers or TrumpOLINI tells them to believe

2

Good job Atheist....Hobby Lobby is closed Sundays another bigot fundie store that also pisses on 7th Day Adventist xians a bit more literate on Saturday mornings with a bit of Hebrew tossed into their calendar and dogmas....so I suppose this xian jerk follows gays and lesbians around also to push them into xian stores denying workers rights like Hobby Lobby.....as for recent news about Church of Satan.....this idiotic new fad for pseudoAtheists to proclaim will only feed that fool xian wood finisher hunt for alleged bad gawd worshippers ....for those of you Atheists never been by a Hobby Lobby property the big store letters are PUKE ORANGE just like our President in the White House tiny fingered Apricot shitgibbon TRUMPolini

@MissKathleen I feel guilty sitting in the HOBBY LOBBY lobby out of the hot sun catching my breath with cool air FOR FREE.....and I have used their toilet ONCE for free.....but walking through that fucked up place has aisles and aisles WALLS full of religious gibberish trinkets and overpriced garbage.....worse the Ames Iowa store is competing against SoFroFabrics that has less if any known appeals to religious bigotry and cheating of employees....a strip mall of 6 businesses total ...2 fabrics, salvation Army, booze & Subway store fronts

2

However, that does sound like a way to get leather to cover a chest !

My Mark Of Cain is the inane grin I wear. Can’t get rid of it no matter how hard I try.

I suppose I could get a proper job and engage with the world about Kardashians, the benefits of a paleo diet and the decline of suitable and affordable hair products. That would probably get rid of it and make me ‘normal’
