Lions Club International.....seems to be a Secular organization. In my little town, where the churches outnumber the people, cats and dogs combined.

Id like to join! ........if it is truly secular. I want to give back and help where I can in this world.

Anyone here in the Lions Club?

No, but I have a long association with the rotary club. Each rotary club makes decisions on their clubs format. Some sing the national anthem and or may have a grace before dinner but they are not religious and don’t make people join in that don’t want to. All the money raised goes to charity as everyone is a volunteer. But you are expected to pay subs and pay for a weekly meal. Satellite clubs are beginning to be a thing, where they meet once a month, so that’s a bit cheaper.
Maybe if the higher power thing with the lions puts you off you could see if there’s a rotary club nearby?

No but I believe their mission is eyesight and blindness. They also are a charity.

As a former president of a Lions Club I can say the prayer was as canned as could be! Someone else said it, depends on the club.

The way I understand it, a person joining the Lions Club has to be loyal to a "higher power." I learned this several years ago. It is possible that this has changed recently....

I do like the charitable acts of the Lions Club, but the "higher power" thing keeps me from even considering joining them.

I used to bartend for their meetings when I lived in a different state. It was a great group of people and I never heard religion talked about.

Not part of the Lions club so I can't answer to that, but my best wishes on your endeavor

Thanx Floyd!

Giving back does not need to be within an organization. I am committed to giving back but chose to do it personally, one person at a time. There are so many people with needs that fall through the cracks. I also enjoy being anonymous in my giving.

I really can't say that you need to ask someone's approval to be a good person, welcome to the group!

If it does not work out for you, you can always start your own club.

I wanna be a follower. I lead my own life/ business. Decisions & ideas all of the time. Too many for an uneducated, untrained fellow like myself . I'm tired of it

@twill "You "wanna be a follower," is what you opened your response with is it not?
Now what I cannot understand here is this, You want to follow BUT you say you became an Atheist, so why did you turn your back on being a follower of religion WHEN now you want to resume being precisely that, a Follower, again?
It makes no sense to me.

@twill Maybe try adult education classes

@Triphid Aww, c'mon, back down a bit! The man wants to contribute as a member of an organization that suits his values, without the decision making piece, given he has a life of responsibilities and decisions already. That is a good and reasonable decision. This has nothing at all to do with deciding not to be a follower of religion, Triphid.

The best volunteer I ever did was working in the kitchen of Meals on Wheels, filling tray after tray with the food of the day like an automaton, elbow to elbow with an amazing assortment of people. It was hectic, tiring, mindless work that served hundreds daily, and a great break from my own life of decisions and business responsibilities.

@tinkercreek Hey, I was saying that it didn't , make any sense to me that he ceased being a follower of religion and be a truly free individual only to want to return to being a follower again.
In all my experiences in life, and they are quite numerous btw, of being a Volunteer in many different groups, etc, I've never been a 'follower' but I have put myself whole-heartedly into the work of helping others, in my honest opinion, one does not need to be a 'follower' to be a contributor.

I was a member of the Lion's club for several years. Many of its members are religious true believers. It is as religious or secular as its local membership.

Here it's heavy on the Lutheran side, but as far as I know, that's the old guard.. people I know as good folks. IDK about the younger, newer members.

The discussion of politics and religion is forbidden. Although, membership in the Lions Club is by invitation only. And subject to the approval of the majority of the club's board of directors. They choose members diligently as it requires time and financial commitments. What about [kiwanis.org] ?

Or Rotary?

My late uncle was a member of the Lions.
Their primary charitable focus are (perhaps were) eye issues.
They collect used glasses for redistribution to children and the poor,
among other things.

Not sure how secular they are.
Hope it works out the way you want it to.
