Someone said to me:
"I invite you to seize the opportunity and invite you to start a search about God. It doesn't matter whether you find one or not."

My reply:
"As often occurs, people make the assumption that the author has never done such a thing . . . . That he is not an explorer of the world around him, when in fact, it is that exploration that has brought him to his current position.
. Humans frequently anthropomorphize as they attempt to rationalize their psychological desire to replace their parents with some celestial being in the sky. The whole thing is an attempt to replace their parents who are no longer around, it is a sign of immaturity and either self-loathing or dependence on others to supervise their lives, rather than being brave, standing up, and becoming the master of their own destiny."

I always say idnb and leave.

I patiently explain yes I have been there and don't need further help. If they persist I try and politely tell them to fuck off

I have found that the most popular reaction from theists to be to assume I simply have not been exposed to Christianity and am unenlightened. Everybody wants to be the one to "reach" me.

I searched for a long time and atheism is the only logical result.
I have a friend that I've known for a long time, we were coming back from a hiking trip recently and our discussion turned to life after death. It basically went like this condensed version;

Me; "There's no life after death, I kind of wish there were. We just go to the same place as our pets, our dogs & cats and every other living thing. The same place we were before birth."
Friend; "That's good though, I want my cats and dogs there. My family, I'll see all of them again & Emily."
Me; "Everyone has their own beliefs"
Friend; "Yes, but it's true though. I know it is."
Me; "We'll agree to disagree."

I'm not going to get angry at him or let it go farther. He can believe as he wishes. He's an old friend and his 18yo daughter was murdered years ago. We agree to disagree. He won't unfriend him over his hopes, they bring him comfort. Sometimes I wish they were true.
As for know-it-All friends and family that's a different story.. My 2cts.

I know of a lot more believers that have become non-believers after a genuine examination of their beliefs than I know of non-believers suddenly finding a god.

Agree, especially where it is assumed that one has reached an educated conclusion without education, intelligent thought, travel, research of different cultures/history and philosophy. The inadvertent arrogance And air of superiority is always a shock to me.

I think religions were also created to help keep people in line. Put the threat of heaven or hell out there and they behave a little better. Somebody in the neighborhood is also promising a lot of virgins though I am not sure where they are going to find them!

Even if you desire virgins the idea to me would be what good could they possibly be to you when nobody has a physical body any longer? I cannot kill myself and then have sexual pleasure. Only a moron would believe that.

Another anomaly of the supernatural religious world is belief that a being with no teeth, claws, or body is going to actually bite or scratch you. As Sagan said, we do have a demon haunted world.

@DenoPenno Agreed... But the great unwashed think they will have a physical body when they go to heaven... Or something similar. How else can they talk to dear old dad?

Nice! 👍

I disagree. Gods were not invented to replace parents but to give easy answers to unknowns.

It would be inpractical to actually narrow it down to one cause, there are probably quite a few possibilities, and even mixtures of causes, depending on the psychological makeup of the individual involved.

@Archeus_Lore yet you did.

Sorry, I am not all-knowing like you.

@Archeus_Lore Sorry, if you confuse stating a fact with being all kniowing, there's denial at least from your part or at worst, ignorance.

Oh yea? I admit I am not all-knowing, and you call that denial, or ignorance? The beginning of wisdom is realizing how much you do NOT know. Since you can't behave like a civilized human being, you are gone, gone, gone . . .

This is true, absolutely. To explain what could not be explained is the root cause of religion, I think. The replacement of parental guidance is part of it for many in our current time, tho, too, as I’ve noticed.

I find my time would be better spent in the superstition mountains looking for a mine. I like what genessa had to say. 😉

If you are talking Superstition Mountains in Arizona . . . check this site out, I have posts on it under the screen name "Skywola", and you will find several forum posts regarding that area. [treasurenet.com]

The dude assumes too much. I have already found my answet and concluded my search.

i have that problem more with politics than religion. every time i disagree with someone, the disagreed-with party assumes i have not done my homework, and sometimes recommends sources -- almost always opinion sources rather than factual ones. (unlike in religion, there are facts involved in many of the issues!) the most frequently heard response to my disagreeing with someone is "you have missed my point," to which i respond, "no, i got your point. i disagree with it!"

Here's how my conversations often go:

Xian: Search for God.
Me: Is this "god" you speak of real or mythical?
Xian: He's real, of course!
Me: What evidence can you show me that he is real?
Xian: Here's a Bible.
Me: Is this book about reality or mythology?
Xian: About reality, of course!
Me: Please, show me the evidence.
Xian: Goodbye!

Yes. I did my own search, trying to determine if there was anything to find that made sense to me. I stopped searching when I realized there wouldn’t logically be anything at the end of that search.
