Thoughts on extraterrestrial life? UFOs?

I am a skeptic about most pseudoscience. However, when it comes to extraterrestrial life, I do keep an open mind on the subject.

I had an experience when I was 18 years old. (Yes, I was sober). I was on my way to work at about 4:30 A.M. At the time I was living in a semi-rural area in Ohio, just outside Columbus. I was driving down a road, when something in the sky caught my eye in my left field of vision. I slowed down and saw a large triangular or arrowhead shaped object in the sky. It had steady red lights on its exterior. The object was nearly hovering, or maybe drifting slightly. It was just above a treeline. Unusually low for a large aircraft.

I was about a quarter mile away from it. I rolled down my window and didn't hear any noise at all. I observed it for about 10 seconds. I got the creeps and drove off. About 15 minutes later, I saw the same object, this time at a much higher elevation, probably several thousand feet, in the sky, and in the same westerly direction. I saw it for maybe 30 seconds and it seemed to fade away in the still dark morning sky. There were other people that saw it in the parking lot of the place I worked at. We were all like "WTF was that?"

This isn't to convince anybody. Just sharing an experience I had. I'm not sure what exactly I saw. It wasn't a commercial aircraft nor was it a conventional blimp. It was way too low and slow moving. Certainly may have been a military aircraft. As far as a drone, I'm not sure either but it was quite large, as in 737 large.

What prompted this was a video that people are talking about from a ring doorbell of a series of lights seen about 30 miles east of Cincinnati. Looks like something very high energy in the atmosphere.

I had an encounter with the exact same vehicle thirty years ago. I wrote an account of it on a now defunct website twenty years ago but it can still be read below if interested.

To this day it's still one of the coolest things that's ever happened to me.

I think UFO's and alien life are very possible, they would have to be very advanced to travel across space, I don't believe in religion, ghosts, astrology or any of that stuff, but I think alien life would be the most likely, life began here on earth, and theres billions of other planets out there, and their discovering new planets all the time.

1

Absolutely possible that there is life in the vast universe .whether or not they are more advanced or not is not something we know not.

1

One has to consider that the rash of alien abductions began only AFTER Sputnik took to the skies, thus opening a whole new realm for our imaginations to ponder.

1

When you see something that you think does not fit into the pattern of things you recognise you are free to call it what you want. Your imagination will fill in the blanks but don't confuse that with reality.

The jury is still figuratively out on this subject. We've no indisputable evidence of such life, as much as many UFO theorists like to point at things we have not suitably explained otherwise as proof. As with anything, I need evidence that is testable, repeatable, unambiguous in its support of the assertion. That has yet to be produced.

Extra terrestrial life and UFOs are not necessarily the same thing.
For example the reports of arrowhead shaped UFOs first appearing rather than the traditional flying saucer coincided with early secret test flights for stealth bombers and fighters ( and coincidentally with the release of the first star wars film)
Since the reunification of Germany plans have come to light for the the development by the Nazis and later the East German communists for the development of flying disks, development that went on well in to the late 1950s the hight of the "Flying saucer" hysteria.
Also given the enormous distances involved I personally find it more likely we would encounter extra dimensional beings before we encounter extra terrestrial entities (the many worlds theory of Quantum physics would seem to back this up)
If life from elsewhere exists however (and statistically it is likely) and we do not know about it, there are I think three possibilities.
Such information has been classified, by us or by them
They think we are dangerous and keep well away from us
Or perhaps we ARE the first intelligent life to evolve in the universe/omniverse capable of deducing the likely hood of other sentient beings.

Extra dimensional beings is intriguing. What does the theory say that makes you think this?

@Remowill If you look up "Many-worlds interpretation" of Quantum Mechanics that should explain the basics better than I can.

There are rather large hurdles to extraterrestrial life coming here.

1

If m sure there is intelligent life with more than enough common sense to come to this shit end of town without some sort of protection.

Have you ever thought, that because we are such pricks we have been banished to the naughty corner of the galaxy until we can show a semblance of humanity?

1

Are there other intelligent life forms? It would be ridiculous to assume not. As for what people are seeing, I am not sure. My mind goes more along the lines of craft that is being tested in some way and people end up seeing some of this. Of course, authorities will deny any testing but from time to time this denial comes out as a coverup. I myself have seen strange moving lights.

As for types of craft being seen by the general public, this evolves in image right along with our perception and imagination of possible crafts. This could be something right along with my idea above, or it is some inner working mechanism within our minds. Chances are that extraterrestrials have not dropped in. Often too many known aircraft seen right along with the unknown, or in close proximity.

the skeptoid podcast of last week commented on a case very similar to yours, it is worthy to take a look

Just as stars are separated by vast distance, we are also isolated in time, occupying the scarcest sliver following colossal epochs of time. If we are being visited by aliens as the evidence suggests, this means that their cultures are stable enough to permit exploration of the cosmos. It seems amazing that they occupy the same time frame as ourselves.

A strong argument against alien life ever visiting Earth is that all lifeforms on Earth are related in time because they all use the same biochemistry. I have never heard of any organism that had a separate origin (I could be ignorant). One feature of life is its tendency to spread, and the history of humanity includes many instances of unintentionally spreading invasive species. If planet-to-planet travel is possible, it's hard to imagine that the travel could occur frequently and not result in contamination. If we see zero contamination, that argues against alien visitors.

I like this one:

there's only anecdotal evidence that we are visited by aliens. That's not good enough for me.

I don't know what to tell you. All the evidence I've seen I'd including my own experience (with my wife) 30 some odd years ago in our back yard in WA just as the sun was going down we both saw has been unconvincing. We both saw the same flying object.
Even now our memories agree on some things -- it was Gray and absolutely silent and nobody in the local news reported it.
But a lot of our memories differ -- I remember it only 50 or so feet overhead with a wingspan consistent with a very large bird -- my wife remembers it as being much larger and much higher.

We've decided to let it go. Our experiences won't mean anything to anyone. When reliable evidence appears of true ufo sightings, extraterrestrial or not, we'll listen. 😊

I think the chance of extraterrestrial life existing is high, just because of how enormous our universe is. I think the chance of them visiting us is much lower for the same reason. I would just leave it as you saw something in the sky you couldn't explain. Keep the mystery but leave it at that. I thought I saw a huge UFO with large flashing lights following me late one night. I stopped the car and just stood there looking at it. It made no noise and continued to follow the direction of the road I was on. I watched it thinking that my eyes must be tricking me and what could this thing be. Cars passed me but hadn't even seen the object. I watched it for at least 5 minutes and then it suddenly hit me that it wasn't one large object but was three hot air balloons which lit up the balloon when the gas jets were heating the air. Once I saw it as seperate balloons, I couldn't see it as one object again and I literally laughed out loud at myself. I drove on further and saw all the cars that had driven past me had stopped and people were also looking puzzled by the object. I kept driving past them. I've never seen balloons before or since out our way and I have no idea why they were up there so late at night but once I realised what it was, it seemed so funny. Not saying yours was so simple but just showing how sometimes your own eyes can create something that isn't actually there.

It is interesting that ever since drones have soared in popularity more people have spotted UFOs.

this whole thread gingerly skirts around issues that strike me as quasi-conspiracy based ... although not explicitly named.....
a quote from S.C.Collins has a great ending which pulls pretty heavily on my 'shirt sleeve' ....

"Once you are forced to hypothesize whole new technologies to keep your conspiracy possible, you've stepped into the realm of magic...it demands a deep and abiding faith in things you can never know...."

THIS PART

"The urge to believe drives people to trade in part of their soul in exchange for the comfort of being a rebel...."
S.G. Collins.....

I may speak for many when I say, "Huh?".

S.C. Collins sounds like a real stick-in-the-mud, addicted to non-belief in ANYTHING for it's own sake.
I feel sorry for both of you.

@Storm1752 .... Que sera sera

Thanks for sharing. Is it impossible ? No.
But is it likely ? Probably not because if it was aliens the SETI community who have been monitoring electromagnetic radiation for signs of transmissions from civilizations on other planets would've captured it in some shape or form I think. They don't strike me as folks who are actively trying to hide first contact. The scientific community would have some knowledge of these facts - but its solely imho

I'm not sure what you saw, but it's unlikely to have been extraterrestrial. If it was, it would be unlikely that the one time when UFOs visited in the 4bn history of the earth just happens to be when you observed it. These days everyone has a camera phone, and all the videos currently available show artifacts, terrestrial aircraft, or hoaxes.

However, they is almost certainly life out there, purely given the billions of blankets in each galaxy, and the fact that there are hundreds of billions of galaxies. It's too improbable that life evolved just here.

The only issue is that is that time and cost prevent interplanetary travel beyond our own neighborhood. We don't live long enough, and we no of no fuel source that would last for the journey. Would UFOs have such technology? They would still have to contend with the physics of how much energy can be stored in a given space. The amount of energy needed for travel at any reasonable speed would far outstrip energy available in a typical planet.

But then, the UFO would be planet size, or even sun sized, rather than commercial aircraft size.

Due to relativity, assuming there are UFO's I'd think it would be more likely they came form another part of the multi-verse. The primary issue to multi-verse travel, as I see it is figuring how to get back to your universe of origin. There could be theoretically an unlimited amount of multi-verse travelers who can't find their universe of origin.

I do not doubt that you saw something that stumped you. When we see things we don't readily understand, we find some interpretation for them. It is the interpretation that can cause trouble for us. I once worked with a woman who considered that she'd had a visit from her god. She described what appeared to be an experience of awe at nature, but her interpretation was religious. And, she was adamant about its validity.
When one considers the immense, vastly immense distances between us and any other star systems that might harbor any sort of life, millions of light years, one of which is 5.88 trillion miles (9.5 trillion km), it makes it hardly possible that we have "visitors."

In 1997 in a rugged area west of Prescott Az. I seen a silver disk speeding away from me. Then a few seconds later 2 air force jets following it. It had a small dome on top at about 10 to12 ft diameter. It was not high top to bottom enough to carry a pilot.. rather small. I have always thought it was an experimental craft. Still do.
All that said, do i think there are alien beings, yup, we are here is proof. But we do not have access to knowing if there are others. I think it wise to think that the possibility of life on other planets is real enough because it is what we are...but maybe more advanced maybe not

The odds are in favor of intelligent extraterrestrial life existing somewhere in the universe. However, that's about all we can say right now. Until such time as such a life form has been revealed for all to see, there is no reason for anyone to believe anything in particular about it. The same goes for God, or Jesus, or The Tooth Fairy, for that matter. Perhaps they don't belong in the same class of probability, but they do share the same condition of not being directly and scientifically observable at the present time. We should always stick to believing in what we can demonstrate to be true, while we're testing for that which isn't yet known to be.

Considering there is an infinate amout of space and possiblilites. It is actually certian there is intelligent life somewhere else. As there is an infinate amout of possiblilities to have life in an infinate universe. We know life happened once. So it is easy mathmatically to prove there is intelligent life. The question if we will meet them is yet to be answered. They could already be here.

0

I accept that there must be other life on other planets in the universe. There may even be intelligent life out there, however, I'm not convinced that this planet has been visited by other life forms, especially not just to shove things up our arses.
