When asked a hypothetical, people are likely to answer conservatively, but when their identity is at stake they would vote for Hitler if need be... oh wait - they already did!

Captain's log supplemental: We've probably had several atheists in the White House. But, to get there, they would have had to lie and say that they were Christian.

Polls! You say POLLS?! That is what got us in this mess to begin with. Polls said Hilary would win so stay home. No one would vote for you-know-who. Well someone did and so polls be damned. Sorry for the bit of a rant.

The sad reality, IMO, there is probably not another segment more in "the closet" than atheists. I understand. It is such a pain in the ass when it comes up and super Christian feels the need to talk about how their (insert B.S.).

Polls aren't nothing, but how people respond to a hypothetical and how they act in real life can well be two very different things. It's like a scenario that's been repeated countless times in my consulting career; you sell a client on a solution, they are "excited" about (the idea of) it, but when they actually have to whip out the checkbook ... or when they actually have to relinquish control ... or when they actually have to change "the way it's always been done" ... or when they get strong employee pushback ...

I'd vote to replace God with an atheist, or a DOG.

My answer to this titular question is, "I sure fkg hope so!" But who knows?
If I were to run for an office I'd probably try to avoid my being ag/ath as much as possible if I could. Mainly because I'd hate to risk it on the assumption that I'm therefore evil, a satanist, unfit to govern [big LOL here, considering the current administration], etc.
