A vulnerable great niece of mine had trouble with her phone communications whilst on holiday and put out a general call on Facebook . This is the reply she got from one of her religious friends

"Philippians 4:6 NIV

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."

Her father who was also called Philip died six months ago. Her mother is religious and she is in the grip of a local young group of evangelists.

So, if I read this right, God was going to... fix her phone...?

Oooh, reminds me of one of those weird internet coincidence stories. Oh, it is. Nevermind.
Here's one of my favorites;

Philippians 5:2
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation seek solace in the wisdom of google, verily I say unto thee seek peace and strength in surfing but let not your battery die, or thy signal drop below one bar..."

WOW - would monitor the location applications to "know
whence the answer arrives from ".

If you don't need um ; we have um :💭-religion
Thanks

I somehow doubt that the verse of god fixed her phone.

Sometimes what we want to say has already been put so eloquently by someone else that the best thing to do is to quote the prior wordsmith with appropriate credit. For example were I to receive the citation "Philippians 4:6" then it would only be appropriate to quote "Arkell vs Pressdram" in reply.

What a tactic!!!

Mental illness used by men to write laws and rules over those they felt inferior too!

We have not progress much beyond the caves were these deranged men still think they are god(s) gift as they lord over anyone that they considered impure!!!

2

Yup - that's what god is, a giant, invisible, all-purpose request vendor !

Just pray , and "poof", deserving or not, you'll get whatcha want !

(wonder if he provides new septic fields to heathens?)

How many times does this sort of thing happen before Atheists realize that having religious friends is just not worth it?

@TheMiddleWay Was this because those friends were delusional people with an imaginary friend or was it something else?

Since we are all equal but unique then I can only suppose that your black friend was looking down on you as inferior and that's not the sort of thing a friend would do to a friend. I get the jewish friend being delusional for believing in jesus or any other savior but that just reinforces my original statement. Same sex relationships are found throughout nature, so perfectly normal so once again off the mark.
Having friends that hold different views is what makes for an interesting friendship, provided those views don't involve delusions that render them completely invalid, especially religious delusions. The problem with religious delusions is that they always wind up affecting the delusional people who believe them and everyone they subject to those delusions.

Without the proper tactics to deal with them I understand why they shun religious people. BUT you will not change. them by shunning them. Rather engage! ...that is if you want to . Discusss first?

Show me your god and there will be no accusations of delusion, until then - Delusional.

@Mcflewster - we don't need to change them, we don't need to save them, we just need to keep them at arms length.

MissKathleen, he was definitely taking the piss and that is just fine by me.

Present your requests to god?......May as well be "request your presents from Santa Claus" still ain't going to happen! 😉

you will always get "Omnipresents" [say it out loud] if you make a request to god.

And of course the bible is an authority on anything, brilliant pieces of wisdom like these:

"For the wife does not rule over her own body, but the husband does..."
1 Corinthians 7:4

"As in all the churches of the saints, the women should keep silence in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be subordinate, as even the law says. If there is anything they desire to know, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church."
1 Corinthians 14:34

Horrible bible words.

Paul was a prick!

@Geoffrey51 Actually Paul did not say this. In the beginning of the letter he actually shows that females have much authority in the church. Scholars believe that this is a forgery that was later incerted later for a variety of reasons.

@DavidLaDeau That’s interesting. I think that may be a similar case with Galatians (I think) and the Evil Eye business. Do you know anything about that one?

@DavidLaDeau never heard that parts of Coronthians were forged. Source?

[books.google.com]. This is the first I could find. It is common knowledge in the scholarship community.

@Geoffrey51 Galations is not disputed as Paul being the author.

Reassure her don't let the thesist mess with her mind

Sorry, can't read in my phone. Could you just say who wrote the book, the quote saying this is a forgery and an excerpt of the proof of forgery instead of posting so many pages with tiny text that can't be opened or even amplified?

4

Really we should just cut off all their access to the Internet, TV, and phones; then show/play Philippians 4:6 on endless loop when they try to access. I mean these are descendants of the same gang that imprisoned Galileo for daring to propose the heliocentric solar system, and as we know they don't "believe in evolution" so it must not be true so they are probably exactly the same unevolved simians as they were back then.

Yeah, and it only took the catholic church almost 400 years to "forgive" Galileo.

4

Yeah, that was real helpful. How stupid.

6

Asshat!

6

Well, that was certainly NOT helpful.

No one ever answers me with bible verses. They know what they're going
to get in return.
I don't care if they mean it to be helpful. I'm absolutely going to tell them
that it's not.

Nothing wrong with that, but the evangelicals have their teeth into my great niece.

@Mcflewster That's too bad. Hopefully, she'll come to her sense sooner than later.
