I have a tendency to delete any post I make that hasn't gotten any replies within a few hours. I've been deleting most of my posts lately which has left me wondering what people want from a post.

What makes a post work?

I've seen posts that are nothing more than a recipe for lemon bars get a couple dozen replies. Is that what people want, recipes? Well, I don't cook but, what the hell, here goes. This is my recipe for...

SCRAMBLED EGGS AND TOAST

You'll need:

  • Three (3) eggs
  • Two (2) squares of processed cheese
  • Two (2) slices of bread

One (1) mixing bowl, One (1) frying pan, One (1) toaster, One (1) plate

Crack all three eggs into the mixing bowl and beat til they are a yellow sludge. Let cat lick up any spillage off the floor. Pour sludge into frying pan and turn up heat halfway or all the way if in a hurry. Place bread slices into toaster at half heat or all the way if in a hurry.

Once eggs have cooked from a liquid yellow sludge to a solid yellow mass set cheese on top and let melt. While melting cheese, remove bread from toaster and spread with butter, or margarine, or plant-based spread that looks like butter or whatever Frankenstien concoction that's supposed to be healthier than butter that you prefer

Transfer eggs to plate, cut toast in half and add to plate alongside eggs. Sit all alone in the dark and eat while you question your life choices.

Feeds one (1) sad, lonely person.

Cat is optional..

Well, are ya happy now?

seriously, you need to give your posts more time. We are global here and some people aren't on here every single day. Possibly they have lives.

I'm sure we all do but I can check anytime on my phone wherever I am and I tend to do that. Still, I've already agreed to extend the deadline to 24 hours.

Beyond that, the post gets euthanized. It's only humane.

@Sgt_Spanky No it's not humane it's ridiculous. I had several post that didn't get a comment for 3 or 4 days. No comment does not mean it's not a good post it just means the right person hasn't noticed it.

Why all this worry about if a post doesn’t get any response? Just leave it there and get on with your life?

I hate coming back after three or four hours away, checking in and seeing some poor wretched post I made struggling to breathe. Better to put it out of its misery.

...Says the gator-skinned lady.

@Rossy92 That must be me 😊

I've gotten answers to post six months or a year later.
Also bare in mind this site crosses many time zones, so it maybe up to 24 hours before it is seen by everyone.

I've agreed to leave them up for 24 hours going forward.

I've noticed that a lot of posts I make (within the last several months) get very little, if any, traffic. Usually only the people who follow my posts are the ones who comment on anything I post, with rare exceptions. I think the site is fundamentally broken where there are tons of posts that nobody ever sees. When I first joined the site, it seems I got a list of all the posts, and there was a lot of variety. Now I can go most of a day and not see any change on the homepage feed. Some of it might be that people are posting more to groups, and unless I'm a member of a particular group I'm unlikely to see those posts without going way, way out of my way. It shouldn't be this difficult to see new content, but I find myself coming here far less often because of this problem. I never delete a post, even if it gets no attention; I've been surprised when someone stumbles upon a post months or years after I originally posted and has something to contribute, so I leave posts alone on the off chance someone will find it interesting or engaging at a later time.

Have you considered posting a recipe for lemon bars?

@Sgt_Spanky I was considering one for apple crisp. 😋

@resserts Do it. Apparently recipe posts are fireproof.I may follow up this one with my recipe for a bowl of oatmeal.

@Sgt_Spanky Are you partial to brown sugar, maple syrup, or fruit in your oatmeal? Wait, wait, don't tell me. Let it be a surprise when you post!

Kinda wish you’d delete this post 😉

Honestly, I don't worry about it. There's so many people on here, from all different locations and backgrounds, with all sorts of opinions and reactions, not sure there's a "formula" for post popularity.

Hope you're not losing any sleep over this ...

4

Love it. That’s why I don’t bother as much as I did. Seeing a post that is not a rant about Trump or Covid 19, and is something thoughtful which can open discussion is unusual of late where only a few months it was common place.

...and I followed your recipe. Fantastic!

See? They're good! Thru taste like eggs cooked over heat with fake cheese.

@Sgt_Spanky Plastic cheese is much maligned.

@Geoffrey51 🤢🤮

I find almost any post takes 24 hours to get "traction" you are deleting too quickly!

Maybe I am. All right, I'll start giving them 24 hours.

3

Deleting a post if no responses after a few hour seems (to me) counter-productive as some people don't come here that often. Sometimes it takes me several days to get around to post a reply to a post. But, if that's what you want to do, then do it.

As for why I reply to posts..... it has to catch my eye. Don't ask me what does that as I have no clue. One of the many reasons why it takes me so long to post a reply to a post is because for that second, it catches my eye.

3

I try to respond to everyone I see. Someone has to give to grief.

3

My posts tend to be me ranting or asking for advice or about some controversial topic. And then I get messages of advice or support or I get people debating and arguing with me on and on. That's my secret to lots of replies. 😛 😉

So I should be more controversial and disagreeable? Actually, that'd probably work.

@Sgt_Spanky umm why would you assume I am being disagreeable though? Some topics are controversial because others are uninformed or misinformed and passionate with their opposition. Does not mean one has to be disagreeable to voice said controversial statement.

Do demifeminists and semifeminists differ? If so, please say how they differ. Thanks.

@yvilletom Never heard of semi feminists. 😕
demi is short for demisexual.

@Sgt_Spanky A rant is just a vigorously expressed passionate opinion. If one is "preaching to the choir," so to speak, there is likely to be little disagreement.

@demifeministgal
Double thanks. During my years (1980-1995) as a sex educator at San Francisco Sex Information (www.sfsi.org if you’re curious), I thought I knew the many sexual minorities.

@Sgt_Spanky you mean your going to change? Your site name is offensive for some unknown reason!

3

TLDRR. Why care. Just talk about things that interest you. The people that don’t reply aren’t people that care about the same things you do. And for gods sake leave the post up. Some of have to sleep and work ya know. You prolly missed out on some cool meetings by deleting your posts.

P.S. unless your just looking to up your level here. Then never mind 😀

3

I've got a whole group I'm in with one member; me.

Which one?

@FrayedBear I'm no longer the sole member, but it was Weird True Stories.

3

If one person checks out my post, I am happy to find someone who shares my thoughts. If nobody checks it out, I am happy to be unique.

3

I'll happily comment and respond to your posts. Content is content. And we want to share ideas.

3

I don't care for scrambled eggs.
So no reply from me.

Want my recipe for a bowl of oatmeal instead?

@Sgt_Spanky If you feel you must.
I don't want to discourage you.

@KKGator Nahhhh, my oatmeal recipe is very dear to me. It's steeped in history and family and there were several deaths involved. It's just too personal.

Maybe one day.

@Sgt_Spanky Whenever you're ready.

@Sgt_Spanky Let it out. It will be cathartic.

Of course it might spiral you further into depression... But at least you'll have oatmeal.

2

Some of my posts never get any response. Other posts draw quite a lot of responses. I am me and you are you. The number of responses that I do or do not get is unimportant to me.

My cat sleeps on my bed at night, and she often purrs, specially when stroked.

Your post explains why I saw that one of your posts had been deleted when I chose to read it. Time zones matter, you know.

Some people don't even come here every day. Give us more time.

Say something about Atheists versus Agnostics.
Always works.

Looks like you hit the Jackpot here 😀 If I were to visit my last post … I’d be reminded how few are interested in US history ..my favorite college subject. A good thing I’m not starving for points 😉

Subtle irreverence. I like it

2

Posting anything that mentions cats in the Feline Fanatics Group will always get attention and comments.

2

Hey, I would suggest you give it at least a day before you delete. Not everyone has the social media free time to check posts every few minutes.

I also tend to post in forums whenever possible, and only on general post category if it isn't obvious to me what topic niche it belongs to.

When I consider posts I have deleted, they either were brain-fart goofs that are embarassing, or multiple readers took offense, and I realized the message I intended what not what came across. Otherwise, I don't see a reason to delete any, just because they didn't rack up comment traffic.

2

I'm on the west coast so I hope you give your posts at least three hours! 24 hours would give the world a chance to comment.

I usually give the post 3-5 hours ro prove itself. If the world hasn't commented by then, the post is a mongrel and I take it out behind the barn and give it the "Old Yeller"

2

Cats and crucifixion - that'll do it.

And memes
