I have heard many religious people state that Atheists do not have moments of awe because they do not beleive in anything or find anything special or meaningful. I absolutely disagree and find myself in awe of our world all the time. What sort of things instill you with a sense of awe and wonder?

Being curios like a child, nature created the world and it’s a far greater story then some omnipotent dude waving his hand... that actually leaves me uninspired and without aw because it’s bullshit.

Every time I see an ancient tree I feel a sense of awe.

People's kindness when they don't have to be. Gets me every time.

Thats beautiful dude. Fair play.

Yes! This! Every time I see it.

Have you ever seen the sun rise above a crystal clear mountain lake to the accompaniment of loons' cries? There are thousands of things that could work, the lake is the one I crave right now.

This is another.

They simply don't have a frame of reference to make it make sense to them. Everything they know and do is filtered through the lens of "God did that! How awesome is God?" They can't fathom being excited about anything outside the confines of their filter.

For me, science and nature give me moments of giddy awe constantly. No filter needed.

I use the "filter" idea when I have discussions with theists, that EVERYTHING that enters the brain must pass through whatever filter you have place over it.

The beauty and Science of nature. The genius and ingenuity of the creatures on Earth. The magnificence of the cosmos. Life. It's all awe inspiring to me.

That's not true at all! I am currently in awe over my new Converse sneakers that arrived with perfect timing at the end of this stressful day. Sometimes it's the little things. <3

Of course, things like that are a shoe-in!

@Meep70 LOL

The believers rarely miss an opportunity to spread misinformation about non-believers.
What they don't know about atheists is A LOT.
It's so much easier to demonize those who do not share their delusions.

Animals and nature.

Conways game of life. Pure mathematics so even the most ardent Theist would have trouble shoehorning in god's wisdom and majesty but from these few simple iterated rules, the most complex and amazing patterns emerge.

the roots of a cypress tree growing on a river bank...heights like the overlook at yosemite. airplane rides. beavers

3

Just taking a hike in nature just about anywhere. Theist are going to just parrot what there authority figures tell them because they refuse or have lost the ability to think for themselves.

Nature and space makes me feel plenty of awe alone.

Absoloute bollocks lol !!!!!!!! Nature to me - pretty much the whole of my existence is "magic" or a "miracle" .. By that i mean it's beauty and complexity is boundless. It is so complex in certain area's it can appear magical. Like if you hadn't seen the posts on FB about phosphorescent algae on beaches making blue neon footprints in the sand, you could be forgiven for being mind blown when stumbling upon it and finding it "miraculouis". Mother nature is my god. If i am working within her remit i am indestructible (lol) ... I am constantly full of awe. I am constantly elated. I am constantly appalled. Pretty much all of that haha.. How can you even imagine another being feels differently or in less depth because they havea different idea in their mind about creation. They were still born with the same code. Baffling haha 🙂 Really good question .. It's often something that croesses my mind.

wow! that algae is COOL!!

@SeeCanU It's properly Avatar.. When avatar came out people were like, "oooh the blue footprints; wish they had those on Earth" .. I was like hitting myself in the face with a metaphorical shovel.

Silly religious people, always trying to feel superior.

It wasn't until I left my religion that I began to experience awe in a more meaningful way. Stargazing did it for me, and has turned into a passionate hobby in astronomy. If one can't feel a sense of awe when taking in the godless vastness of space, one may be emotionally stunted, in my opinion.

Everything on the planet except humanity.

We as atheists believe in what we can see, therefore, we can't see God, however, it doesn't mean we don't find beauty in the things we can see, such as all of nature.

42? It's been a while since I read the 4-book trilogy.

2

A belief in a seperate diety has nothing to do with being in awe of life and nature--that's being alive

2

Look up at night and think there's other planets out there also how the feck did we survive as a species !??!!

2

Good grief! What doesn't? I'm utterly besotted with just about everything. That's my mooney, hyperactive, floridly philosophical mind for you.

I'm not even exaggerating. I'm sure I can--with perhaps just a little effort--find a thread to fascination from any source. Try me.

I find myself in Awe of this Rock we all live on. How many billions of years did it take to create the senario that lets us Humans Live and breath and think and Love and cry! Talk about amazing!

2

Yeah. And many religious people think the universe is 6K years old.

Engage one of these fools in their attempts to disprove the speed of light as to how we can see Andromeda.
