So now that private companies are starting to put stuff in space howling do you think it will be before one of them decides to put something up there that will be used to hold the world ransom?

This is sort of takign a James Bond plot and putting it into the real world. Which unless private companies re properly regulated could be an actual possibility.

I dont' know how many peopel have actually me tsomeone who was born into wealth, but some are more than a bit condescending and meglamanical, and they view persons who are nto rich as "peasants" or littel more thn animals and a nuisance and are generally seen as expendable.

I don’t get how a scheme like that would work. Are they going to threaten the entire world collectively? If so, are the perpetrators living on the moon?

Take out weather, communications, and GPS satellites to start with.

They normally threaten mass genocide or to destroy tourist attractions

@SimonMorgan1 How does having objects in space make these things possible or easier?

@bingst No GPS or weather satellites? That’s not much of a threat.

@indirect76 It isn't just about having objects in space. Once you get something into orbit, it can pretty well be targeted at any spot on Earth.

@indirect76 not sure I'm not a mad scientist

@bingst but that’s not the premise of the original post.

@indirect76 Sure it is, "put something up there" = "get something into orbit." It's like firing a missile, but you can pause it in orbit, then make your demands. In other words, the ability to put something into orbit makes it feasible to then make demands. Plus, you can also target it at other things in orbit, like the space station.

@bingst oh, I misunderstood, I thought you meant the satellites could be targeted by something on earth.

What is "Space howling"?

A typo bloody phone just adds random words sometimes

20 years...just a wild ass guess.

Quite a while. They are just getting their ducks in a row.

The likelihood of any company doing that is rxtremly remote. Should they try, it would be easily prosecurable.

I'm more concerned about the proliferation of debris in orbit as launches become daily events. Mostly I'm concerned about it hampering efforts to study and explore space beyond low earth orbit. The more satellites there are, the higher the probability for collisions, and then shrapnel from those collisions increases the probability for other objects, and so on... it coulld get messy quick at a certain scale.

They'll have to pay me...One Million dollars! Mini Me agrees.

Even when it happens, because the powers-that-be are so shortsighted, there won't be any way to stop them even after the ransom is paid, so weather, GPS, and communications is in peril. I mean, the Russians and Chinese could do that now. And North Korea could soon be able, as they apparently have the rocket tech needed for it.

Where's Starfleet when we need it? 😀

While I would be more partial to Weyland Yutani, Starfleet would serve the purpose just fine.

You stand more chance of a government putting something to control other countries not private industry.

Who says they haven’t?

???

Paging Hugo Drax.
Wouldn't it be a real kick in the ass if Elon Musk, or Richard Branson, did something like that?
