For those of you who are in favor of the death penalty because the bible says so, here's a list of the 'crimes' that the bible commands are punishable by death.
Murder
Kidnapping
Attacking one’s parents to cause them bodily harm: Exodus 21:15.
Cursing one’s parents: Exodus 21:17; Leviticus 20:9.
Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.
Sacrificing your child to Moloch, a pagan god: Leviticus 20:2.
Willful negligence that results in death
Sorcery: Exodus 22:18; Leviticus 20:27.
Being a medium or spiritist: Leviticus 20:27.
Breaking the Sabbath: Exodus 31:14.
Sacrificing to idol gods: Exodus 22:20; Deuteronomy 13.
Trespassing in God’s holy things and places: Exodus 19:12,13; Numbers 1:51; 3:10,38; 18:7.
Blaspheming against God: Leviticus 24:10-16, esp. v. 16.
False Prophecy: Deuteronomy 18:20.
Contempt for the final decisions of the high court of the land: Deuteronomy 17:8-12.
Giving false testimony in a capital case
-------Sexual sins that were also capital crimes [2]
Adultery: Leviticus 20:10,11; Deuteronomy 22:22.
If a man commits adultery with the wife of[a] his neighbor, both the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. 11 If a man lies with his father's wife, he has uncovered his father's nakedness; both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them
Incest (specifically with a daughter in law. For more, see Lev. 18:9-17): Lev. 20:12.
Marriage to both a mother and her daughter: Leviticus 20:14.
Rape of a betrothed or marred woman: Deuteronomy 22:23-29.
Homosexuality: Leviticus 20:13.
fIf a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.
Bestiality: Leviticus 20:15,16.
Prostitution, if a priest’s daughter: Leviticus 21:9.
Pretending to be a virgin if you are not: Deuteronomy 22:13-21, esp. v. 21.

In a previous post, I cited infractions which the Bible stated warranted the death penalty. Many of these seem absurd by today’s standards. Things like cursing at your parents or being gay. I recall, when I used to go to a spiritual discussion group, which included religious and nonreligious people, that when I would bring up such things, religious people would say that that was the old testament. It’s the new testament that really matters.
The old testament is some thing that God created when he thought we weren’t ready for the real thing. That’s the new testament. However, according to this theory, who’s to say that God isn’t about to release a new update. Let’s call it the New New Testament. Let’s say it’s going to be released next year, and when it is released, the New Testament will no longer apply. It was an upgrade from the old testament, but it wasn’t really the final word. He thought that we weren’t really ready, still, for the real thing. It’s the New New Testament that really matters.
So now that we’ve blown gaping holes in that 'not ready for the real thing' theory, the question remains, is the Bible the literal word of God. If you contend that we should be executing adults for murder because it says so in the Bible, should we start executing children who curse at their parents. You can’t have it both ways.

I’m in favor of the death penalty for criminals with rap sheets, not first time offenders as the system is flawed and sometimes sentences innocents to death. However habitual violent criminals deserve to be executed.

It appears according to the bible that virtually all of the televangelists should be put to death, mostly due to false prophecy, but many have been caught doing other stuff listed as well.

So was Blasphemy and uttering the name of God, picking up sticks on a Saturday and calling a prophet of god Baldy (that one was SO bad it would have god himself send a couple of hungry wild she bears after you!)

Wrong bible breath... The quoran is your 3rd testament bahaullah the 4th testament all wrong behind the older Bhagivad Gita also fake ALL alleged gawds are impossible idiotic braggingS of rapist clerics

1

yeh they really went apeshit w/it, i guess; by 1ce you could get stoned for just about anything. The law of sin and death was very literal then, in Israel. you are freed from the law of sin and death was apparently a thing that actually happened when the state imploded

I am in favour of death penalty for certain crimes but not because the bible says so. Don’t give a fig about what the bible says. Not one.

For those who have indicated support for the death penalty I would say that you had stated many valid reasons. In a perfect world, where our justice system was administered by perfect people, I would be in complete agreement.
However, our justice system is administered by very fallible people. Many innocent people have been murdered by the state and as long as the death penalty continues so will the execution of innocents. This is not a rare event. To me this is intolerable. Furthermore if you are a minority you are far more likely to be executed. For example, when the former San Francisco Supervisor Dan White murdered the mayor and Harvey Milk he was sentenced to five years and served two. One year for each murder. It is clear that if he had been a minority he would have been in jail for a very long time if not executed.

I agree, even one innocent person killed by the state is too many in my opinion. It sounds like a horrible nightmare. I'm not opposed to serial killers or war criminals getting a taste of their own medicine but if there is a chance that system might kill an innocent, it shouldn't exist. Life in prison to me sounds like a worse punishment anyway.

All killing is invalid ethically except repelling invaders stopping active shooters/killers

@Tejas @augimmun I would agree that there are people who society would be better off without. That said, I don't believe any civilized country should sanction the killing of its own citizens. We already know how one sided the justice system is currently; imagine if there is a backsliding and less justice reform and what could happen then. When others try to use emotion on this issue, I am quick to say, "Yes, if someone harmed a love one, I would want to kill them myself. And, I would hope to be stopped." We should be people of reason, so, 1) the system makes mistakes and kills the wrong people 2) it costs more money, usually, to put someone to death than to keep them in prison for life 3) death is a short amount of suffering, while a lifetime locked up, especially in solitary confinement, is a lifetime of possible suffering.

Alot of people here will say they don't support the death penalty except for crimes they find extra heinous. Some others will hope someone they find bad gets raped beaten and/or killed by other inmates. Very unenlightened bunch, when it comes to the punishment of criminals.

It is a sad fact of human nature that many will always find vengeance preferable to justice 😟

No shit, Sherlock!

You have a way with words.

@augimmun so do you.

Interesting that you chose to post a list of punishable by death crimes , based on the Bible , to a bunch of people who don't believe in it . Agnostic.com , get it ?

Yes, I thought it was obvious that I was not trying to convince a group of agnostics that the Bible was fallible, but rather to share Interesting information on a subject that we are all interested in. Get it? (probably not).

1

Thanks for the scriptural references on this subject.

Now I set the bible aside to say this. I only know one thing about the death penalty. If used wisely for heinous crimes we can rest assured that we have one mofo who will never be committing that crime again. P.S. I've had a murdered grandson and murdered friends. Can I forgive? Oh, hell no!

3

Excuse me BUT you forgot, I think, to include " Using the Lords name in Vain," which also incurs the penalty of being Stoned to Death.

3

What about those of us who favor the death penalty, just because some people are ruthless killers who cannot be changed, and do not fit into society?

Can we banish them to Antarctica instead? Or maybe Mississippi?

How many cops and other military are ruthless killers waiting to shoot bomb or poison with weapinized viral agents ?

They kept Gacy for one, alive too long. Kill the Clown !

4

Anybody who regards the Buy Bull as a source of moral authority is best described as being a bigot.

1

What I find hypocritical is the same people that believe in the death penalty are completely against abortion.

Once your out of the womb your on your own

True the tampon terrorists want to outlaw menstruation forcing all women to stay pregnant the morning after rape or holes in condoms so the fertilized ova grow up and be killed for religious crimes

3

Pretty sure nobody here believes in the death penalty for that reason.

I personally do believe in it for certain crimes mainly because sub humans that commit those certain crimes shouldn't continue drawing breath.

Those crimes include: Rape, Child Exploitation (including pedophiles, child molesters etc) terrorists and politicians

"and politicians" 😄😄😄😄

The desire to be a Politian, should automatically preclude you from becoming one.

@LenHazell53 it should also get you committed lol

Faithfools need to realize that jesus believed in the OT. The NT is thought up and written by humans.

As is the OT.

“The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.”

― Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion

2

I despise the waste of the death penalty.
Keeping the death penalty only buys lawyers vacation homes.
Not to mention how immoral it is.
So many innocent people executed, life in prison at least gives the innocent prisoner a chance that new evidence might free them.
The death penalty is state sponsored murder.

I have been preaching this for decades.

3

Those same people who say "that's the old testament" bullshit, then turn around and spew the same shit anyway. All hypocrites.
