Any non god fearing entomologists out there who can identify this critter who's living under our table in the yard? It's a big bugger, about 2" long! If so, can they eat plastic tables? ๐Ÿ™‚

Great with hot sauce!!

Or dipped in chocolate syrup. Lots of protein.

It just looks like a grasshopper to me. We used to catch them all the time and use them for bait. Smallmouth bass love them.

Isnโ€™t that a grasshopper?

That's a pretty big grasshopper but I wouldn't say it was a giant grasshopper, those are much more rare.

Is that real?

@barjoe No but it has been fooling a lot of people for decades as a 1950's pre Photoshop postcard from the USA. They did a pretty good job of patching two photos together to make it look real.

@barjoe They had fun with postcards in the west:

Grasshoppers can get huge.

They puke what called tobacco juice as a kid.

All those times I would have my hands cupped together as a child.

No! No! No! Lori NO!
I Don't want to SEE it!

Don't you even THINK about throwing that on ME!

Bad child!! Sure hope that's changed LOL

@Paganlyl Long lineage of critter catchers. Cousins in FL actually caught alligators.

Half feral as kids I think. Fun way to grow up, though.

We had a small plague of them back in the summer of 98' in OK ... They go "CRUNCH" as your driving over them. ๐Ÿ˜

During that particular wave, my BIL said he was going to have to buy hay for his herd of grasshoppers bc they ate all the grass!

Grasshopper. They only eat plastic if thereโ€™s no greenery to eat.๐Ÿคฃ

Oh shit, our table is green! ๐Ÿ™‚

Grasshopper. Use to us them as fishing bait when I was a kid.

Closest I can get is some species of insect.

Definitely of the Grasshopper/Locust Species/family, though most 'hoppers stick to devouring plants the Locusts are widely know for eating almost anything, plastics included.

I once saw one nearly that big attached to the screen of my patio door. I was shocked at how huge it was. It just stayed there motionless for about two hours before flying off. I had no idea grasshoppers go t that big before seeing it for myself This was at least 25 years ago.

Google 'grasshopper taco' if you dare.

Cheers for that, I keep saying we ought to have an emoji for puke! ๐Ÿ™‚

Hmmm. Have there been any UFO sightings in your area recently?

Nah, just mine! ๐Ÿ™‚

Locust like big grasshopper. If you move it keep your fingers away from it's mouth. Otherwise, it will not hurt you.

That why everyone calls you lefty?

Thatโ€™s one of those Texan grasshoppers!!! Careful it doesnโ€™t try and convert ya!!!๐Ÿค

During my 15 years in Florida I saw lots of โ€œpalmetto bugs,โ€ four-inch-long roach-like creatures that flew. They congregated under streetlights and, when walked on, they crunched loudly.
