Veterinarians - one problem with replacing children with pets (which we need to support). This is a shocking report. [npr.org] We had our local vet retire and no one has been found to replace him. There is a small apartment over the vets office but, to date, a vet comes from Friday Harbor for the day and spends the night in the apartment.

I'm wondering if I'm caught up in similar malaise. My reaction to 2 years of lockdown has been to greatly increase my time away from home by looking after others pets so that they can vacation or even work. I have become increasingly aggravated over recent months, particularly with motoring cost increases caused by American meddling in Ukraine.
It has now reached the stage that I have had to bluntly state on my profile advertising my services that I am not interested in ungrateful owners who think that their responsibility for their pets ends when I walk in the door. I expect the owner to physically hand the pets over to me and similarly receive them back. As I state leaving a key to gain access does not guarantee that either party will not be involved in a fatacc 1 kilometre down the road. Failure to ensure that I'm alive each day will not ensure that your pet is fed & watered each day.
I recently had one woman take umbrage because having disappeared into a remote part of Tasmania & suddenly ceased contact, had not bothered to say she wanted privacy, did not organise alternative daily contact through the daughter who had been nominated as emergency backup, & then berated me for wanting to raise the alarm & have search parties organised in case they had driven off road over a cliff.
By rights I should have rung the daughter & told her that I was walking off the job (unpaid - I don't charge because I'm trying to simplify my life by not having to deal with tax office & others who with OCD behaviour demand to know my income if it varies) as they were not ensuring their pets safety in pursuit of their possible godbothering at a bush religious retreat.
They didn't even offer me contribution to the cost of my 450 kilometre trip to look after their property, old dog & two cats they had suddenly illegally made feral because one brought a live tiger snake into the house.
Selfish selfish uncaring unintelligent people.
Stupid FrayedBear!

Not just 'America's (which includes Canada) but also most of Europe.
