We won the Cold War.
The global supply of free market labor increased by a factor of 5.
That was great for the low-skilled labor outside the USA.
That was terrible for the low-skilled labor inside the USA.
Those blue-collar boys from the USA who were fighting to keep Vietnam from becoming Communist were fighting for the wrong side.
Those blue-collar boys from Vietnam who were fighting to make Vietnam Communist were fighting for the wrong side.
The wrong side? Or the wrong reason? I question the whole premise of the domino theory. It presupposed that a system that was economically inferior could keep on expanding without limit, and could only be stopped by force of arms. But what actually happened was quite different. Free trade and market capitalism have proven much more effective at liberalizing authoritarian regimes than bullets and bombs ever were. This is not to say that there isn't still a long way to go.
Another celebrity clothes-horse to distract the masses and gum-up the works. Corruption incarnate.
