It's definitely not an easy thing... to be a card carrying Southerner and disagree with pretty much everything.

I seriously recommend reading the "Liberal Redneck Manifesto". It's written by three comedians- it's hilarious. But gives so much background on why we often grow up the way we do. Totally worth checking out.

I served my time - 4 years in Central Mississippi. It sounds like you learned to hold your tongue already. I found my outlet in trying to sneak the seeds of critical thinking into those around me. Just because someone is religious doesn’t mean you can’t teach them to recognize pyramid scams or health quackery.

If you focus on what you can’t do (like speak your mind on religion) rather than what options you still have open you, it will drive you insane.

Do your best to emulate the positive aspects of their belief system and try to pity, help, and love even the most ignorant among them.

I am liberal christian and liberal in my political beliefs. I don't fit in with conservative Christians at all because I'm an agnostic theist.im also glad for this site. I enjoy the post very much. I have more in common with nonbelievers than I do with believers in my town lol

I’m having to think about this. I live in a very rural part of Alabama, and though not an atheist, I, like you, reject Christianity as presented by traditional churches. I have no problems whatsoever—in fact most of my friends are non-believers who never go to church. I interact well with everyone. Only a tiny fraction of people seem interested in my religious opinions.

I wonder if the difference is my 75 year age, or maybe it’s something else. Hmm...

Small town Missouri here. Where there are more churches than people.

South AL here. My public persona is an extremely watered down version of my inner self...I'm a cashier.

Why not just move somewhere else? Alabama has absolutely nothing.
