QUESTION Word Porn: 9 life lessons by Tim Minchin (Funny and Wise)

This short commencement speech was fantabulous.

#2 - Don't seek happiness. Happiness is like an orgasm. If you think about it too much it goes away.

Thank you for this. I watched it twice and made notes:

  1. One can have a “dream” but often that dream gets sidetracked and one has to follow another road (I have experienced this many times). The Chinese curse says: "May you lead an interesting life".

  2. I especially noted the “luck” part. It is important and often overlooked. It has played a huge part in my life.

  3. The exercise part that is another message to get off our/my butt and do more (I don’t need a whole lot of encouraging, though). I think the part of depression is spot on.

  4. Too bad few Conservatives don’t understand the critical thinking (opinions) part but the number of liberals who practice the same, I find, is shrinking (I guess we all need to get a rear-view mirror to examine our “opinions&rdquo😉. One important caveat missing from this is pay attention to your experiences. Experiences count a lot.

  5. Teachers not only teach they also learn. Both are a big part of this site.

  6. What is “stuff”: Is it material or experiences and relationships (not just with people).

  7. Abraham Lincoln once said “As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master”, I think, should be a good idea to follow here.

  8. True and it took a reply on this site about the continuous acquiring of wisdom to see this. When one has reached a peak it is time to die.

Thanks for being a teacher.

@VictoriaNotes Again, thank you for this (a nice holiday gift). When my first wife was pregnant I did not want a son I wanted a daughter. There were the usual ups and downs and we were estranged for 20 years but are back together and have a very good relationship. I named her Marilyn after my mother.

@VictoriaNotes. This is another connection I made through this conversation. Our separation had nothing to do with me and I just realized the 20years apart was the price I paid for something I did which helped save her life and/or mental health.

Parvin's daughter once told her "Mom, "You know those many times I said I hate you?". Then she said "Thank you". Parenting often requires doing things that hurt as most parents probably know. Happy Holidays

@VictoriaNotes
I think I just flagged you again. I tried to delete. Anyway, just wanted to comment on the video. Thought that the tribute to his daughter was really nice.

A great speech which i have seen it a few times and it is spot on,the use of self deprecating humour is all the more compelling as it makes him humble yet wise, a very hard thing to pull off. Otherwise it sounds trite and condesending.

I do keep running...even at 56.....if you cannot do this just keep moving best you can.

Also reminds me of this song which I love
