I've noticed what I consider an inordinate number of black cats here. We've got two. How many of us cat staff care for at least one black cat?

Heathens like us have to have black cats.

I have never had a pure black cat. When I was looking for a cat after my old girl died I wanted a ginger, and found an adorable ginger. Then I wanted a companion for her, and one of my coworkers was fostering a kitten that needed a home as she had a vacation scheduled. Color didn't matter. I just like cats, someday I will have a solid black cat.

Yes it's way more personality isn't it?

I adore black cats. They're beautiful melanistic tabby panthers.

There are actually way less superstitious people these days.

The last time I adopted a pure black cat I was told they were less adoptable because they are hard to photograph.

There are also more black cats born then other varieties which perpetuates the stereotype that they aren't adoptable. - There are actually more of them!

In my experience orange cats are the most common. I think today black cats are quite sought after. I brought my Salem in to the vet for a check up and my vet asked if I knew any black cats needing homes because she had people tell her they want black cats. But yeah, in a shelter or rescue situation black cats are not as flashy in colouring as some other cats.

@graceylou Yes this might vary by location. But apparently black is a really common coat color. They're actually a type of tabby in most cases.

I belong to a black cat group on FB and we've only had one member report someone coming to the house (A delivery guy) and saying "Get thee behind me Satan!". And then running away. lol

@RavenCT Geez. LOL. My Salem is the cutest thing and I can't imagine anyone would consider him evil. He was the only black one in his litter and we kept him because he was weak and almost died soon after birth. We had to syringe feed him, taking turns every 2-3 hours. His mom who was feral kinda just left him to fend for himself because she had 4 other kittens to care for. Mittens my tuxedo was also a feral foster. Her brother and sister were adopted because they were flashier in coat colour. That's ok. We love Mittens.

I did not know that. Thank you.

@graceylou A bottle baby! I'm told they bond really strongly with their human.
And good for you for rescuing that little one!

@graceylou My old girl was a bottle fed baby who fostered in a family with cats, dogs, kids, adults, and other critters. She was definitely people bonded. She was my heart cat and passed away in November 2016.

@HippieChick58 This was Salem as a baby. We didn’t think he would make it. Sorry about your kitty.

@graceylou Salem is adorable. Miss Millie was well loved her whole life. She bossed the dog, a 75 pound Golden. She was blind her last few years, but got along well when I moved. We made sure she had a good end when it was time. She will forever be the standard I judge my kitties to 🙂

@HippieChick58 Salem rubs on and marks my 100 lbs St Bernard mix. Then again evetybody does.

I only adopt black cats. The other colors always find me on their own. The stigma is still out there & now we are returning to the dark ages. There are no pets in this White House for the 1st time since the 1800's. I will provide sanctuary for all black cats.

Have had 4 all great friends. One would sit on the back of my easy chair wrap its front paws around my head and lick my balding spot. Felt great.

There's always one!

I post this all the time! Maybe because I have had black cats and know they can be as naughty as any other... Isn't there always one? lol

But I DID have a beautiful tuxi back in the day. She was the best.
