The other day I was talking with a co-worker about all the nicknames we use for our animals. What do you call your pets?

Let me think here:
Mazie is sometimes Z, Mazie girl, Mazer, Mazeroni, or (don't judge) Mazeroni and Cheese.

Lucky is sometimes Key, Kiki, Lucky girl, Baby girl, Pretty girl, or Beebee.

My newest, Munchie hasn't earned as many, but may I call him Munch, Munch boy, Munchie boy, or Munch man. He probably also thinks that his name is "Stop it!", "Get out of there!", "Leave her alone!" or "Goddamnit!" ?

I have a habit of shortening names in general. I tend to call my daughter TJ "T", for example...

My pets: Bailey = B, Supernova = Nova, Jasper = Jazz, Callie = Cal, Coolie = Cool, Sirius Black = Siri, and Luna = Loon.

The only ones that I call by their actual names are Warren, Seven, and Jack... for some reason.

So many furbabies, so many choices. I use their full names, versions of their names, evolved versions of their names (eg Einstien>Steiner>Steiny) or terms of endearment, which can be tricky since "honey" gets applied to any particular pet, causing potential confusion.

Typically I use some adjective that describes them somehow... Zip, Zippy, Mooch, sometimes Stinky Butt. But always said with love and affection.
I call all animals (and some kids... especially if I don't know their name) Boo-boo or Buddy, or some derivative there off. Cute Little Boo-boo, Sweet Buddy-boo, Boo-boo Buddy. Goofy/Stinky Boo-boo.
I don't know how I got into that, but it's always meant with kindness, no matter how unflattering the adjective.

@orange_girl Ha ha . Cute.
Well our "Zippy" is becoming more of a "Sluggo" so it's becoming more and more ironic here too. LOL

Shit Head!!!!

Yeah, there's that too.

As Terry Pratchett once wrote, all cats believe their name is "Yarghgetoutofityoubastard"!

(Probably misquoted, as I can't find it online) 🙂

That would be what they believe their human name to be, anyway. I'm pretty sure they have their own cat names... probably things like "Evilor, Flayer Of Souls" and suchlike.

Dorian sometimes gets shortened to Dory or just plain Asshole
Bianca is either Baby B or just B
Ginger is sometimes called Ging or Mr Bean Toes (not sure why my roomate calls him that)

Fluffernutter. Mr Fluffypants. Monsieur le Pantaloons.

Actual name? Heath.
There's more but he'd hurt me if I put them in print!

My dog Skipper has over 21 knick names. From Wippety WooWoo, to Old Brown Shoe, Joseph, Whip... It goes on. As a group, the pets are called "The Idiots"

You need an "All of the above" option for our household. Some of our options include Mingaroo, Muffaroo and Earl of the Girls.

@orange_girl We also have Tufferina Ballerina 🙂

I sometimes refer to them as my "furbabies" or my "familiars" .... the latter I use only with people who are "in the know" .... "familiars" is the word the Spanish Inquisition gave to cats owned by women who got accused of witchcraft.

SKH78 Level 8 Jan 6, 2019

"Familiars" has been used for witches' companion animals for centuries in England - probably even before the days of the Spanish Inquisition, as it's not a Spanish word. There's an interesting story from a village near me about an old woman who one day received a visit from a mysterious black man (who would certainly have been noticed in rural Cambridgeshire at that time) who brought with him a box containing a ferret, some mice, a toad and four imps, which had been the familiars of a witch who had lived in another nearby village (one which, according to an old legend, was in days gone by known to be a "witch village" ) and who had recently died. He handed over the box and familiars and, now that they were hers, the old woman became the most powerful witch in the area. The most astounding thing is this is supposed to have happened in the 20th Century, shortly before the First World War.

@Jnei What a cool story. I've always been accused of being a witch (if only!) and I've had cats - a lot of them black my whole life. So I call them all my familiars.... 🙂

@Lavergne You could be one, depending on your definition of what a witch is. Casting spells and flying around on broomsticks (or sections of willow fencing, which the witches around here seem to have preferred) is a bit of a tall order since we know all that's impossible. However, I personally always thought of a witch as a woman who had taught herself about the world, knew her own mind, did what she chose to do and, while she might choose to share her life with a man, neither needed to nor relied on him to support her if she did choose to do so. Once, that sort of woman was considered so dangerous that men who wanted to maintain the patriarchal status quo would put her to death; today, she can't be so easily and conveniently silenced.

@Jnei ooops. that definition might hit just a little too close to home. 🙂 😉

@Jnei Oh My Goddess !!! I have never been dependent on a man ... I have always known my own mind ... and I have educated myself about the world and chose to do what I wanted. Perhaps in a previous life I was the "village wise women" who cured with herbs. I am so thankful I am not living in the Inquisition. Must have been an atrocious time for women.
