Attached is a picture of my tomato plants today. They grew to almost 10 feet tall then fell over and formed a canopy between the rows. The tallest now are still between 8 and 9 feet tall.

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.I grow bush variety tomatoes in my Alaska greenhouse. Standard varieties grow too tall for my roof. Tall and leafy plants do not produce more fruit. I like Bush Early Girl hybrid. Nice big fruit and very disease resistant. I use string support with plant clips.

Remember; if you don't trim them back that means more stems...less fruit. That's why farmers actually send laborers out in to the fields every few weeks - to pinch back the stem growth and push fruit! Notice these are short, but very fruit-filled!

The secret (besides soil and nutrients) is growing them in cages or hoops made of wire that are about 5 feet tall. As the plant grows and branches out, I train the branches on the frame of the cage. That provides the support so that they grow that high.
