So. @leafhead . I've not noticed this fellow in our gardens before. Any idea as to the species?

the 8 spotted Forester is the common name; here's details including a map;

I'm contacting my guys at Sony. You should be hosting your own science show. 😉

@bigpawbullets Funny you should mention that; I used to be a guest host on two different science shows...on for PBS/WLRN in Miami, and another for a local channel in Kingston, N.Y. I saved some of the video (yea, 8 track) of my PBS shows....I should dig them out and get them transferred to DVD/digital...

Thanks for the compliment; but it was an easy google search....

I noticed a comment NULL for adult food source.
Does this reflect a lack of knowledge of adult nectar sources?
I noticed a definite proboscis in the pic, so it evidently has mouth parts as an adult

That's the butterfly that the military used to make our stealth fighter Jets... 😚

Attracted one to my garden in 2015. Made "Cool Bug of the Year" by a wide margin. I love diurnal moths. This one's one of the prettiest

You are lucky indeed 🙂
8 spotted foresters are beautiful moths indeed. They, and their closely related lookalikes, the Grape Leafroller, can be attracted to your garden with Foxgrape, Virginia Creeper, and many other native vines in the Vitaceae (Grape) Family.
Hint: watch out for Japanese beetles on these plants. They can be rather devastating
