I use pots that are larger than necessary, I add course mulch in the bottom mixed with pearlite. The bottom of the pot acts as a composting vessel and each year i dump all the pots back into the compost and mix thoroughly. This allows me to continually add nutrients to the pots and not get root rot.

Notice the article makes assumptions as to where in the pot the plant's roots are. So how much the plant roots fill out the pot matters.

I abandonded gravel for pots many years ago.

I just put one rock over the hole. It works fine. I'm not big on containers for plants though.

I like the coffee filter idea. Pity I use a plunger & rarely drink coffee.

Worth getting at the dollar store? I can't believe I've been doing it wrong all these years... Though the plants have never been unhappy about the stones in the bottom? lol

@RavenCT I have sometmes picked them up at garage sales

@FrayedBear I mostly drink tea these days - however I usually have some beans on hand in the freezer - and even though I have stainless filters - they just don't work as well as paper so I do have them on hand.
Now to remember 'coffee filters Not stones!'. Next time I am planting.

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
