The ferns are starting to unfurl. At this stage the uncurling fronds are known as 'croziers', after a bishops staff.

They don't appear to be Ostrich ferns, therefore you probably shouldn't eat them.

Yes Ostrich ferns are the only ones you can safely eat. I have those too but they are among the first to come up, so they are well past that stage with me now.

@Fernapple I'm still waiting and watching for the fiddle heads to come up, so named because they look like the head of a fiddle. A tasty spring treat to forage in the woods.
