Actually duels of this type were 10 paces each back to back then turn and fire (about 50 feet) with a pistol that wasn't very accurate. Even with a modern pistol most people can't seem to hit much at that range though today's firearms are not only far more accurate but deadly as well. Most dueling pistols were smooth bores with such low velocities that even a hit at that range rarely resulted in death other by infection.
