Can't stand constantly barking, hyper little dogs
genessa comments on Sep 25, 2018:
i don't hike anymore; i used to hike around on mountainsides in japan and they're not big on walking their dogs, so i never really ran into them there. dogs have always liked me and i have always liked them, despite my being more of a cat person. dogs run up to me not barking but wagging, licking, loving. i have one hyper little dog and she doesn't bark much. she usually barks when the biggest cat stops kissing her. she likes kitty kisses and is insatiable. he loves to kiss her, sometimes putting an arm around her when he gets really serious and bathes her, but he eventually stops and she begs for more. she does bark in her sleep sometimes but it just sounds like little hiccups. i didn't set out to get this type of dog but it happened and now i love her. she is crazy about me (and the cats) too. i admit she is hyper and she does jump up to get attention and be petted but she holds still once she is being petted. she's not perfect but she's a good girl. g
What do you say to people who say you can’t have morals without god?
genessa comments on Sep 25, 2018:
i don't meet people like that in person. on facebook i tell them they're just "moral" if they even are in order to be rewarded with heaven or punished with hell. a person who has no hope of one or fear of the other can be good for its own sake and is far better than one who has those motivations. g

Godly Inconsistencies Say there are three churches in your community.
genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:
why would i want to worship anywhere when there is no one to worship? if there was a church of santa, you know it would proclaim that santa was the one true god and you'd be unable to worship anywhere else. and that would be sad because the tooth fairy still owes me money. g

genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:

When defining your reality remember it is yours and not everyone's so do not become solicitous.
genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:
what is wrong with being solicitous? do you mean some other word, perhaps? meanwhile, if i am in a dark alley and some guy whose reality is that the voices in his head say he has to kill the next little old fat lady he sees, i am certainly not going to be solicitous of him, nor understanding of his world view. i won't give myself time to respect it. i will put my walker in high gear and run like hell. g
Has anyone read Can We Be Good Without God?
genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:
nope. i feel no desire to read about why we can or cannot be good without god. i am sick of being told that i can't be. i know that's not true. so what do i have to read about it for? g
A check for honesty.
genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:
what kind of question is that? you appear to assume both that everyone, or at least everyone here, has a discernible and inflexible worldview, and that everyone, or at least everyone here, provided that worldview is discernible, is dedicated to keeping it inflexible. how is learning and growing not honest? g
Why are we here ?
genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:
you're asking that in a funny place to ask. almost all of us are atheists or agnostics, so of course we're not going to say we're here to glorify some god. g

Do sacred sites move you?
genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:
i do not believe in the concept of sacredness. i love good architecture. i don't care if it's a church or a gazebo. i am a bit moved by certain synagogues but that is because of their struggle to exist, sometimes having been destroyed and rebuilt. it has nothing to do with sacredness. i like the acoustics in the parish church of st. martin-in-the-fields. g

Why I finally decided to block a friend on Facebook.
genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:
idiots eh? where to begin! there's usually a lie and a false conflation and then maybe some more stuff. the lies are that democrats say men are dangerous rapists, and that they also say men should go into girls' locker rooms. i actually don't KNOW whether anyone thinks girls should go camping with boys. i am not sure that's a terrible idea. but let's set that aside for the moment. the truth behind the first lie is that certain men, and we can name them, are dangerous rapists. this is true. the truth behind the second lie is... there is no truth behind the second lie. democrats are saying that WOMEN should go into WOMEN's bathrooms and GIRLS should go into GIRLS' bathrooms, and the same with men in men's facilities and boys in boys' facilities. trans women are women. trans men are men. simple! the false conflation: that recognizing rapists when you see them has anything whatsoever to do with letting trans people use toilets when they have to go! g
Some people are just born into a lucky life while others aren’t? True or false?
genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:
of course it's true. but that doesn't mean that people born into lucky circumstances take advantage of them, or don't blow them totally. trump was born into a rich family and was given a million bucks to start his career. he could've been a lot richer had he invested, he didn't have to be the kind of guy who turned bankruptcy into a profit plan. he could have done anything. some people are born into poverty, and that sure isn't lucky, but they work hard, and sometimes that's what pulls them out of poverty and sometimes more bad things happen and it just doesn't work. it's not luck as in a supernatural force controlling someone's life; it's luck as in the luck of the draw. but then one does or does not take what one is dealt (another supernatural-sounding concept but honestly, that's just how our language is!) and do something with it. g

my cats eat everything they are given. however, that isn't necessarily good. something is giving one of my old girls the runs lately. i think we have to go back to the meow mix. g
Something has sure caught wendy's attention! that's layla behind her.
genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:
lol in answer to all your questions: i added the music later, so the cats are not reacting to that. they do react when i sing, though. wendy is probably watching me, since i probably took this with a computer rather than with a phone and thus didn't have it in my hand and was free to walk about. layla, the one in the background, died a tragic death after a play-fight with wendy; she hit her head on the metal bed frame and had seizures, and died before we could even get her to the vet. wendy is still with us and purring loudly near me right now. the instruments are from a computer program i had a while back. most of it is a honky tonk piano (from the program, whose name i don't even remember, and i sure would love to have it again on this computer). i wrote this on the program and had the sheet music that i wrote at one time -- moving a whole lot results in a lot of loss. thanks for asking! g
How many of us in here have lived and continue to live a PERFECTLY ethical and moral life?
genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:
nobody is perfect. i think, however, that in general those who are not living in a fantasy world do better, ethically and morally, than those who are. religion, which is purported by many to keep people ethical and moral, has the opposite effect. g
I am so freaking tired of people that know nothing about music saying "I know what I like".
genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:

5 Depression Myths We Need to Stop Believing Today [psychologytoday.com]
genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:
i hope at least most depressed folks (of whom i am one) know these myths to be untrue. i hope further that most depressed folks' loved ones also know, but i'm afraid that hope goes unfulfilled. so many people really don't know the difference between being clinically depressed and just feeling sad. why, if i tell a joke, and laugh, and seem cheerful, i can't be depressed, right? wrong! g
Anyone else feel isolated?
genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:
i never was a shul-goer as i was raised in a secular jewish household. i never knew that social scene. i always felt isolated for a variety of reasons but never thought of religious gatherings as a way out of that, and it probably wouldn't have been, for me, anyway. if you're raised with it, i guess once it's gone, you miss it. g

genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:
oddly, i had reason to believe the allegations against cosby the first time i heard them, because in 1997, my now-late best friend, an actors' manager, came home from a party where he had sat next to scott bakula, and told me (when i asked) that bakula was as nice as everyone said. then he said, "do you know who the nicest guy in hollywood is?" nope, i said. "denzel washington." he went into detail about why. then he asked me, "do you know who the meanest man in hollywood is?" nope, i said. "bill cosby." then he told me about the time one of his clients, an actress, called him (my friend) frantically from a hotel room on location for a film, saying cosby was banging on her door demanding that she have sex with him. i don't remember what advice my friend said he gave her, but when, years later, those allegations came out, i knew they had to be true. i'd liked cosby, too. what a waste. now, i have no such regrets about kavanaugh. i like nothing about him. to me it's just disgusting, not saddening, that he is the kind of creep he is. it's saddening that creeps such as he exist, but i do not feel some kind of disappointment in him. you have to have expectations, even of simple decency, to be disappointed. i never suspected him of anything good, not even simple decency. g
Just curious.

How do you all recognize design?
genessa comments on Sep 24, 2018:
if it's alive, it hasn't been designed (stuff like designer dog-breeding notwithstanding). rocks can be carved but if they're not on mount rushmore and don't have a signature or a plaque, they're probably not designed lol. if the hedge looks like a cat it's been trimmed but the hedge itself wasn't designed. if it's a chair, it was designed. birds design birds' nests but birds are not designed. beaver dams are harder to recognize but if you see beavers around you can guess. g

What happened to the Tea Party? Deficits are being run up and they don’t seem to care...?
genessa comments on Sep 23, 2018:
the tea party, purportedly a grass roots populist organization, was in fact created by the koch brothers, who really never did care about the deficit, or much of anything else. their sole concern is to be able to continue to pollute so that they won't have to spend the money to keep themselves compliant with the regulations they hate. it's all about money. to this end, they buy school boards and schools, newspapers and more, in order to keep the populace subdued by religion and voting red. g

Do you have compassion for the believers?
genessa comments on Sep 23, 2018:
the thing is, bad things happening is not a good reason not to believe in a god. the fact that there is no realistic reason to believe in any gods is a good reason not to believe in any gods. "god is bad" is a lousy reason. in the history of religion, most gods have been bad! that never stopped anyone from believing in them. g
Could you love a child conceived out of rape?
genessa comments on Sep 23, 2018:
it depends on the person. to me, a child is a child. if the person who was raped wanted an abortion i could certainly understand that. if she wanted to bear the child but wanted the child then to be adopted, i could understand that too. if she wanted to keep and raise the child, i could also understand that, but i could not understand deciding to do so and then hating or at least failing to love the child. there are mothers who are dreadful to their children for no reason at all, so of course it could happen for this reason too. if it were i, and i bore and kept the child, i would love the child. g

genessa comments on Sep 22, 2018:
Funnily enough, i never think about sexbots. g
Men who never learned to cook
genessa comments on Sep 22, 2018:
my guy can't cook. once when i was sick i asked him to cook, and i had to give him instructions one step at a time. i told him to peel an onion. i told him how. three hours later, and i am not exaggerating, he was done. he had sliced the onion and then peeled each slice. g

1. not having a bank account. banks these days will deny bank accounts to people with bad credit. bad credit should not mean people can't buy stuff; everyone needs to buy what they need to survive. if you don't have a bank account, you need cash. you can't use a money order at the supermarket. 2. vending machines. some may use credit cards but some credit cards charge per transaction and the charge may amount to more than the cost of the purchase! more research may need to be done here. 3. every citizen should have the right to use legal tender rather than something that represents legal tender (which is symbolic in and of itself but that's another story). 4. lawn sales, garage sales, private sales. ordinary citizens don't tend to accept credit cards! if you want to buy something from a neighbor, you need cash. 5. tips to the paper delivery person. pizza people may accept cards; other delivery folks, especially those who are not collecting payment at the moment, don't. 6. checks are not always free; one generally has to buy them. credit cards often have fees. cash is the most direct, fee-free way to pay for something. atheists should not be forced to pay extra not to be bothered with someone else's religious declarations. g
Watching from the beginning of 9 with my daughter. She's 7.
genessa comments on Sep 22, 2018:
nine was strange to say the least! i've softened toward him and have some episodes i'd like to see again. it's just that 10 was SOOOOO good! but if you can show her any four.... don't you wish they'd show some of those, more often? g
I got a notification that I am a the group owner of this. Does anyone have anything to post?
genessa comments on Sep 22, 2018:
i'm rather interested (not in running it, but in participating) but have not been feeling well myself, so i have not gotten around to organizing my stuff so that sharing pictures makes any sense. i hope the group doesn't shut down! g
I had just seen a post that raises red flags when it comes to scammers.

Last night I was out with The Phoenix Atheists Meetup group at a local restaurant.
genessa comments on Sep 22, 2018:
that is wise. if it was used as toilet paper, it could infect the user. g

Can I find love here?
genessa comments on Sep 22, 2018:
you never know where you're going to find love. one question is, will you recognize it when you find it? another is, do you have to patience to let it grow? it doesn't come from finding someone who looks compatible. it comes from making friends and letting the friendships be whatever they are. maybe one will turn into something else. g
I don't have an axe to grind
genessa comments on Sep 22, 2018:
well, that's nice. i don't want to make assumptions based on facts not in evidence, but are you thinking maybe that other people who make posts have axes to grind? people can make posts with actual content that doesn't involve animosity. g
Wooooohoooo!! I can see again.

Forget wedding cakes.

i saw adf and couldn't figure out why the american defense league would be acting like that. of course this is a different adf, a hate group, the opposite of the adf actually. i can't help wondering whether they deliberately chose a name that would yield those initials in order to make people believe that the real adf had those hateful attitudes? g
Who is your favorite 1950's horror actor?
