i suggest you check out some posts around here. there's quite a variety. we're as much a microcosm as any other group. you might find some good music (i do my best toward that end!) or some news, some arguments, some deep, some downright silly, about (what a concept) religion and lack thereof. dig in. g

genessa comments on Sep 22, 2018:
what the heck is god's christianity? i see carrier's definition of christianity, but what is god's christianity? is it not odd that sometimes a very caucasian-looking jesus is portrayed wearing a cross? if he existed, he wasn't a christian; why would he be wearing the symbol of the romans' normal execution device? is this what is meant by god's christianity? g

List your strangest encounter with an unknown person.
genessa comments on Sep 22, 2018:
often a woman's strangest encounter is with a man who wants something from her, and sometimes gets insistent. i have had a few of those. my second day in los angeles i was followed home by a strange young man who obscenely details all the things he wanted to do to me. i told him in no uncertain terms i had no interest and that he should go away, but he just kept following me and listing, um, activities. we were approaching a dark area i felt was particularly dangerous, after which, if he did not attack me there, he would then find out where i lived, so as he was telling me (for a change of pace) that he would do anything, anything i wanted, i turned and called him a liar. he was taken aback. i told him he was a liar because he said he'd do anything i wanted and he wouldn't. yes, he would, he insisted. i want you to LEAVE i said. he turned on his heel. i never saw him again. another time i was in nagoya, japan, coming out of the immigration building, walking along its narrow path, when i met a man from africa coming toward me on that path, apparently heading toward the building. he stopped me and asked, as if we had been conversing, if i would like to go back to his place and have sex. well, that was abrupt! i laughed and said no. "why not?" "do i need a note from my mother?" he began to wheedle. i said no, but i couldn't get around him. this became tedious and annoying. but then i remembered what i had in my pocket. you see, every march 15, the japanese celebrate the honen matsuri -- the fertility festival. it's a festival for penises. i kid you not. men get drunk on sake and carry around a huge replica phallus (it takes about six or eight guys to lift it) and women try to touch it in order to ensure fertility; i kept my distance! the grounds of the shrine at which this takes place has little mushroom-like penises planted all over the place, and a gift shop selling phallic items ranging from candies and cakes to keychains. i had purchased a little golden keychain and now, on the path on the immigration building grounds, i whipped it out and showed it to my interloper. "i don't need you. i have my own!" he laughed so hard he let me escape. g

Ok, to be honest, I never really liked parties. Especially big parties.
genessa comments on Sep 21, 2018:
i used to go to fabulous parties. i miss them. there were people i knew and more people i didn't know, in an intimate setting (an apartment). there would be music playing, but no room to dance unless you went into another room. there would be food, drink and grass. we'd discuss music, politics, literature, language, everything under the sun. we'd do group drawings on a huge piece of paper, with colored pens and pencils. those were great parties. g

Every time we glorify the cradle of our civilization.
genessa comments on Sep 21, 2018:
i don't see why we have to glorify anything at all. studying and understanding are enough. and if we really study, and really understand, we see the real role of women, despite the fact that they were so little valued (oh my how things have changed -- um, not so much).but let's expand slightly past greece and rome, and learn about hypatia and, alas, her fate. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/hypatia-ancient-alexandrias-great-female-scholar-10942888/ note that egypt had at least three female pharoahs that we know of (well, that i know of -- you may know of more!): cleopatra, nefertiti and hatshepsut. the last is little spoken of but the other two are much portrayed... the way men imagine them. g

genessa comments on Sep 21, 2018:
good point buried in there, but it IS buried, because first of all, you're addressing atheists and agnostics here, not the religious, so the religious won't see this; and your initial premise -- that most religions believe that god is like a teacher -- is incorrect. i've never seen a religion like that. in addition, in religions in which flattery is involved, it's the god that wants the flattery, not the student. g

I have always heard that government is bloated and private corporations will always run things ...
genessa comments on Sep 21, 2018:
when i worked for the social security administration, i knew going in that my job was temporary because jimmy carter had ordered a governmental hiring freeze. yes, a democrat, reducing government, imagine that! but he didn't reduce what government was capable of doing, and it wasn't done for profit. efficiency is one thing, and bottom line is quite another. the current government -- you know, the one whose members complain that its bloated but do not fail to pick up their own paychecks? -- is bloated because of who's in it, not because there shouldn't be so much government. by comparison, private industry, unrestrained, abuses its workers and its customers alike. with fairly elected, honest public servants, government size won't matter as much as government function, and that is how it should be. vote blue in november, all the way up and down the ticket -- yes, the dogcatcher too! g

Christian by culture?
genessa comments on Sep 21, 2018:
christian culture doesn't exist. all kinds of people worldwide are christian and their cultures are those of their locales; even their christianity differs by locale. not counting roman times, christians have not been isolated, resulting in their forming an identification not connected with country and thus a culture unique to the religion (example: jewishness, as opposed to judaism). christian VALUES, ah, there's a laugh. only christians seem to identify values they may or may not actually hold and practice of being good to other people, being honest, being charitable, etc., as christian values. they're human values, and quite frankly, as far as christianity is concerned, they're theoretical, because that's not MY observation of christians at ALL. abandoning your faith may turn out to be the best thing your values ever experienced. you'll find nonchristians with the core values you've been thinking are christian, and they'll actually live by them! g

What does everyone think about the Groper-In-Chief nominating a fellow groper to the Supreme Court?

Hey parents, do you teach your kids about Santa?
genessa comments on Sep 21, 2018:
i'm not qualified to answer on SO many levels and yet here i am answering. my kids are all furbabies so they don't know about santa. i have never been christian so it would never occur to me to tell a human kid about santa. i'm an atheist so even if i'd been raised christian i wouldn't bother my kids with santa... but they'd be exposed to him elsewhere (tv, school, etc.) so i would have to tell them who he purportedly was, that he is fictional, and that they could have fun with him if they liked, but not to believe. all moot of course, under the circumstances. g

Many atheists groups on f/b advocate that they should be closed groups mainly because it's useless ...
genessa comments on Sep 21, 2018:
there is a difference between a theist and a religionist. a theist believes in a god. s/he may do so quietly; s/he may or may not consider the believed-in god to be an integral part if his/her life. s/he may discuss the matter with friends or not. s/he doesn't necessarily proselytize, or try to legislate/enforce/adjudicate religion. a religionist is intent upon telling atheists they're going to hell, legislating against whatever his/her religion is against and for whatever it is for, wants executives and judges to be on the same religious page, and has been known to troll atheist (and other-religion-from-own) forums. you can publicly declare what you believe and theists might scroll by, or read interestedly, or respond politely. religionists will troll you no matter how reasonable you think you're being. you see the difficulty? maybe groups should be closed and individuals should speak openly, at their own comfort level. best of both worlds? g

What is a genius?
genessa comments on Sep 20, 2018:
that is a ridiculous and untrue definition of genius and it's not even what an iq test is or does. it may be flawed as a measure of genius, mostly but not solely because there are so many kinds of genius, but neither is it as you describe it. memorization has zip to do with what's on an iq test and will not help anyone on one. i can't help thinking this comes from a defensive, anti-intellectual perspective. g

most of us (as opposed to the delusional) know that racial animus underlies much of trump's "appeal." however, that very racial animus is played to by putting it (delusionally) into the context of economic threat. being disabled, i get some services from the county, and one of them is mom's meals (like meals on wheels). i keep them in the freezer. i eat them for breakfast but if i am sick enough and have to ask my guy, who can't cook, and has alzheimer's, to feed me, i just ask him for a mom's meal. he can heat it in the microwave. it's not gourmet dining but it is better than starving and it's better than fast food. g
Why do young guys think sarcasm is positive?
genessa comments on Sep 20, 2018:
first of all, the sarcasm i have seen here and elsewhere is by no means limited to, or even mostly from, young men, or men, or the young. second of all, a lot of what passes for sarcasm is only snarkiness. so we have not actually correctly defined sarcasm (two of the three definitions are not even sourced). and third of all, while sarcasm isn't called for as often as it is delivered, sometimes it is called for. for the record, i think lazarus is wrong, especially since he appears to assume that all sarcasm is delivered to its object. sarcasm is often (i have not done a poll so i shall not pretend to know HOW often) delivered to someone who agrees with it, and its object is a third party, generally not present. for example, i might say to my guy, "oh yes, trump is doing SUCH a great job." it will be my tone, not the words, that render this sarcastic. trump can't hear me (as if i would spare his tender feelings if he could -- yes, this parenthetical phrase is sarcastic). so to ask why young men think sarcastic humor is positive you must assume that young men think sarcastic humor is positive. you back up your assumption, but the quotations from your backup do not do the trick, because lazarus makes assumptions of his own, and the quotation from holmes doesn't specify sarcasm as the reason she thinks young men are not very charming. since i dispute those claims, and do not agree with the premise, i can't answer "why" except as above. g
Can Judaism be evolved toward being a genuine and inspiring and useful atheist humanistic thing?

to a large extent it already has. it isn't complete yet, but it's getting there. g
Favorite work of Science Fiction?
genessa comments on Sep 20, 2018:
i can't pick ONE! stranger in a strange land by heinlein was a mindblower but i was already a fan and there is a soft spot in my heart for the door into summer. hmm... maybe, possibly mindswap by sheckley, or fahrenheit 451 by bradbury. i adore ellison but my favorite works of his are nonfiction. the female man by joanna russ. so many! those will do for now. g

genessa comments on Sep 20, 2018:
i don't think libertarianism is a religion. i think it's republican light. i don't think it's anarchy. i think it's selfishness incarnate. i do not speak from a position of ignorance. i speak from a position of having paid attention to libertarians. g
Superstition
genessa comments on Sep 20, 2018:
in the theatre, we would not say "good luck" before a performance, preferring to say "break a leg." wishing someone good luck was purportedly bad luck! there is also the theatrical superstition against uttering the name of the play "macbeth" backstage. one says "that scottish play." g
Bad Drivers??
genessa comments on Sep 20, 2018:
speaking theoretically it would be a dealbreaker but in reality i fell in love with the worst driver outside of japan (i lived there for 10 years and know whereof i speak). we've been together 18 years now (but he no longer drives; i don't mean now i drive; i mean we are not as mobile as we once were because i don't drive and he no longer can.) g
What do you really believe.
genessa comments on Sep 20, 2018:
in what context are you saying god comes up so often? here? we talk about this stuff here for a number of reasons but one of them is that elsewhere we keep butting up against it. we don't just encounter people who believe in gods. we encounter people who want to legislate religion, usually christianity, and force nonbelievers to go along with it. we encounter people trying to convert us or frighten us into behaving as they do, or shunning us in situations where we have needs not being met (wild example: if instead of refusing to bake cakes for gays, that cake shop owner refused to bake cakes for atheists, or jews, or muslims, or druids). we live in the world we live in and we can't ignore the fact that there are religionists out there and they interfere with our lives in ways they shouldn't. g
Patience, compassion, and letting go of things and people which keep us down are catalysts for a ...

some things endanger your life and even kill you, and those things don't teach you anything. some abandonments teach you to stand on your own feet. others traumatize you. oh, one should be mature and learn to stand on one's own feet, right? tell that to the next six-year-old who is abandoned. absolutely nothing that angers you teaches compassion. that's total crap. some things you can't control teach you to let go. others teach you to feel helpless. some annoying things teach you patience. others do not. this meme annoys me and quite frankly it is not teaching me patience. it is reminding me how simplistic and simple are not the same thing, and calling mindless advice mindfulness is a really good way to silence people who should be trying to fight some annoyances instead of being patient about them. g
