I had a tooth grow in without enamel (that’s how the dentist explained it). It got pretty bad around school, and I had to get a root canal. I have a tolerance to Novocain and some other pain killers, so I felt a lot more than I should have. The failed root canal was bad. Getting the tooth pulled later on was excruciating.

I had a root canal, went directly to the mall and walked around and once I was numb, went out to eat. I was completely fine.

I have had 3 of them over the years. The only one that was 'bad' was the one where I had let the tooth go too long and first thing they had to do was treat the abscess. None of them was a pleasant experience, but that one was the worst. However, I'm told a lot of the good or bad of the experience has to do with how good your dentist is at doing it. The guy (same guy all 3) who did mine used plenty of anesthetic, did a great job fitting me for the crowns, and they were expensive, but non-eventful.

I've had a number of them due to me clenching my jaw in my sleep. They're not fun but the tooth sensitivity and pain they replace is far worse. I have them use extra novocaine on me. It takes a lot to numb up my jaw and if it hurts, I won't let them continue. I don't mind drooling down my shirt afterward as long as it doesn't hurt while they're messing around in there. The hardest part is getting the contact right after installation of the permanent crown. Make them tweak it until it's right. Your mouth is too sensitive to feel things aren't right in there.

I had several over the years, they were all painful and expensive.

Many, I tend to be conservative about it now as the tooth is destine to be pulled not so long afterwards, its like extracting the root from a tree & expecting the stump to be firm indefinitely, you may just as well just pull the stump.

Whoever thought up the name "root canal" was an idiot. It sounds horrible. I had one. Don't remember anything about it. That's how traumatic it was.

The bad reputation they have came from the good old days of dentistry when they were much more painful. They really aren't a big deal anymore. I've had 2.

Several. And I'm the biggest whimp in the world when it comes to dental stuff.
The procedure is not even as unpleasant as having a cavity filled. It's just a longer process. Your jaw muscles might get a bit sore from having your mouth open for longer than normal for, say, a cleaning.

I've had several. Never had problems. They numb you up, drill a small hole in the center of the tooth and pull out all the insides. Then they pack stuff inside the tooth and seal it.

Mine didn't cause the pain to subside due to fractured roots and the teeth had to be extracted.

I have heard of some people requiring surgery because of veins or something running around the tooth preventing it from being extracted and I've also heard of cases where the tooth had to be "broken up" to be taken out to avoid colliding with nerves/veins in the jaw. But I've had 3 and never had issues.

I've only had one on one of my front teeth. I didn't have any preconceived notion that the procedure was going to hurt, I just wanted the pain I came in with to go away. Even with the numbing, the last part of the procedure was very uncomfortable. I can see why they get a bad rap.

I had one done. The anticipation was worse than the actual experience. It was no big deal once it started. No pain during and with the pain medication that I took for two days no pain after.

My tooth was dead anyway so it didn’t hurt, but it was uncomfortable to have a file being pushed doiwn my root canal.

If you have a good doctor you needn't worry. They will simply dope you up with local anesthetic and then ream the nerve out of the root of the tooth. I have had several done, and I hardly felt a thing. It's a specialty so your regular dentist will probably refer you to someone else for the reaming. Then you go back to your dentist for the final phase (usually a crown). If your insurance does not cover it, you may feel a little sticker shock when you get your bill.

Have had a total of 8 now dentists say 1 in 10 will fail ie don't clear the infection i had 4 if my 8 fail and then still had to be pull yes i took the antibiotics

5 here and an implant...piece of cake, actually...all the hype can put your body on edge...chill, let them give you drugs, and it is done...biggest negative: time factor...it takes more than one trip for all the steps if you also get crowns

I have had 2 and it was no worse then an extraction. Mostly just apprehension of what might happen, which never happened.

It wasn't bad. Not at all.

If it saves the tooth. It's worth it.
