I am into the Hippocrates` maxim : Make food your medicine, and make medicine your food. If you can not eat it, and it does not grow in nature, it is not food, and it is not medicine.

I need medicine to live. Medicine that isn't food or natural. It literally keeps me alive. Also quite a few foods will kill me.

You are welcome to your homeopathic mumbo-jumbo, but I like living, so I'm going to listen to people who studied medicine their entire lives.

Nicely put.

Hope you never get diabetes. Insulin isn't edible, nor does it "grow in nature" if you stop producing it.

I work as a sport scientist and I have a Master's in Exercise Medicine and work as a free lance sports nutritionist, so hopefully I can give some incite . This post seems to create a false dichotomy between food and medicine. This is why I believe that food is not medicine...

Firstly, food is a necessity. Furthermore, there are a whole host of other factors that make food, food, such as the emotions felt when eating it, nostalgic memories resurfacing when tasting, smelling or thinking about food. Most importantly, the social interactions that food creates

Secondly, whilst some foods have been found to have medicinal properties, like tumric, cinnamon and ginger, it's normally a specific compound that causes this. Furthermore, when studied the compounds are in a concentrated form that's impossible to reach by eating the whole food.

Thirdly, whilst it's true that some diseases are managed through diet, this is done in the form of nutrional therapy and under the strict supervision of a dietitian and are to manage diseases, not cure them.

Eating a balanced, calorie appropriate diet does reduce the risk of non-communicable disease, like type 2 diabetes but there is a very clear distinction between avoid foods at all costs due to fear of illness (which creates problems I'll explain) and eating a balanced diet to ensure that one's body is working normally.

Avoiding foods because they are viewed promote disease or are unnatural (GE Crops for example) or only eating certain foods based on their potential medicinal benefit is the beginning of disordered eat. When these food choices are categoriesed further in to clean foods, eating disorders such as orthorexia start to emerge.

Hopefully this had clarified why I don't view foods as medicine ?

Yes!

...thanks ,good& helpful info
on a very emotional subject

Oh please. Anti retroviral therapy for HIV is evil, but hemlock and deadly nightshade are fine? And why is this posted under 'Academic'? It's just plain dumb.

Many medicines are extracted from nature, as are a good number of mind-altering narcotics. Similarly, there are many naturally occurring toxins and carcinogens. Nature is neither positive nor negative. It kills just as easily as it cures, and neither weeps nor rejoices in the process.

8

I prefer it that people get vaccinated to having preventable diseases, especially in children, rife.

Also, I like that my medication for hypertension has maybe preventable me from having a stroke or heart attack.

I would like to see that daft ‘treatment’ homeopathy banned, though.

*prevented... darn autocorrect. I don’t know why but I can’t edit my posts on my iPad, it thinks I want to upload a pic.

8

Ummmm..asbestos, lead, heroin, cocaine, arsenic, etc etc etc are All-Natural substances...do you put them into your body too?

6

Ok, I have Diabetes, so by your logic I should not take my insulin since it is not a food. If I did that I would go into a Diabetic coma and ultimately die. Thanks but no thanks. I'll take my chances with modern medicine. That is what science and learning is all about

6

really what a stupid way to think insulin anti convulsants anti depressants anti retrovirals the list goes on average age of death when hippocrates lived 35

5

While I like what your saying in theory, I am alive due to modern medicine. Well over half the first world population is alive due to modern advances in water/waste treatment, vaccines, insulin, antibiotics, GMOs, and vitamin supplements. No doubt people should eat better but the maxim sounds to much like alternative medicine to get my agreement.

5

I used to be a chef, so I know how to eat a great regiment of intake of Proteins, carbs, vitamins, and colesteral, treans fats, and many others.

So in a way I do understand that a good healthy diet can help one maintain a better healthiness.

But to say that drugs are not medicine, or what ever nonsense you are babbling about is pointless.
I am diagnosed with Schizoaffective disorder.
What exactly would you say what food I should take for that?

some rhubarb no doubt and ill take some parsley and cabbage for my diabetes we`ll be fine 😛

5

Fine . Next time u get a bacterial pneumonia , cellulitis , a simple bladder infection , do not come to me for antibiotics . I won't even mention autoimmune diseases here , complicated virus or chronic conditions or neurological / neuromuscular or cardiac conditions .
Just simple common infections . U know . The ones that can simply kill u even on 2018 if left untreated . U can take all the natural crap that u wish sir . I promise u . Ain't gonna treat your breathing , your A fib or your seizures .
I hope u re consider your beliefs especially if u provide and decide for young children or elderly folks . Thank u .

As a species, we've learnt a lot in the last two-and-a-half thousand years. If you want to turn your back on all that, it's up to you.

4

Okay folks ... Let's put our happy face on. I have often said that we should be talking about this with each other. But people get so pissed when they don't have to... So, any experiences we could share that would be helpful, we don't. Why is this I wonder? A small percentage of us, roughly 3% of the world's population has a rare genetic deficiency or abnomaly. For this we are grateful to turn to modern medicine. The rest of all the afflictions and diseases are acquired. Some folks just don't have the money, knowledge or means to avoid or eliminate acquired disease. We can't hold them accountable and they have to take drugs if they can get them. This is sad but it's what happens in a capitalistic environment. Our medical industry sees us as consumers. Some of us can buy medicine some of us can't. And it will make sure there is always a lot of sickness to go around to create a profit for the industry. The other 97% without a genetic abnomaly and the people who can afford and understand what good preventive care is needed can use food as a medicine. And they will stay healthy because of it. I will never call drugs "medicine" because they will not cure you. They will only add the thing you need to be brought back up to ultimate shape. It you need to take the drug for the rest of your life it is not a cure. But that's okay! That's just a given and how it works. We should be grateful for good food however, and not call it non-conventional. And of course we are grateful for life-saving drugs, surgery and treatments. No one has to say that we are not grateful. There are two different things here. Both are good so whyfeel you have to choose one side or the other? I use both and I'm equally grateful for both.

4

That sounds elegant, but I see no reason to believe it’s true.

3

There have been a few advancements in science and medicine over the last 2,400 years.

3

2000 years ago..that's fine. But go ahead and try natural cures to your melanoma or pneumonia. See how it works. List your favorite charity so we can contribute after you die.

You are correct but incomplete. Even if sick, a healthy eating regimen helps. For example, fasting combined with chemo looks to have better outcomes than chemo alone. Low carb, high fat is also beneficial in cancer treatment among other maladies.

@Mitch07102 but it's not a cure is it? which was the point.

@eric788 It can be a contribubatory factor in one.

3

I like the first part: "Make food your medicine, and make medicine your food" as I think our diet has a lot to do with the state of our body's health. The rest of it...nah.

The hippo never lived in the 21st century!

3

Sounds like a terrible idea, but it's your life, to use or lose as you see fit.

2

There are negative side effects to medicines. I think there is a middle way: moderation. I am fortunate in not needing medicine at this time, but if I develop an illness that calls for medication, then I won’t hesitate to use it.

I do think there’s way too much medication being done in the US in lieu of healthy lifestyles. There’s also the indisputable fact that medicine won’t keep us alive forever. At some point the best course will be to get with the program and move on.

1

Anti-vax, then?

if it walks like a duck....

Hippocrates was dead hundreds of years before Caesar and Cleopatra went to bone town. He didn't know a lot about germs or ... well, anything as to modern medicine. That's not to disparage him, but this is one of those maxims that worked at the time but is no longer relevant.

0

Absolutely true. We can influence about 70% of what happens (30% is just bad luck) so it pays to eat clean, exercise etc. The standard American diet is harmful.

0

Very Wise!! Hippocrates is the Father of Medicine for a reason!!

Etre Level 7 Sep 7, 2018

yes because he is credited as using a scientific method concurrent with his day and not believing in bullshit were he alive today he would be smart enough to know a glib throwaway comment wasnt worth the paper it was written on

@weeman

Not everything in academics is 100% correct. People have lost their careers challenging the academic consenus, only to later be vendicated post humusly or without a job.

I can show you several academic records that this statement holds true. Since we are here, lets talk about the reason why medical doctors only take one class in nutrition? I mean the evidence is there if you so chose to learn.

Even the Great Philosophers recognized the manipulation of State and the use of media platforms to control human consciousness and history.

Good Luck

@Etre "Since we are here, lets talk about the reason why medical doctors only take one class in nutrition." Yes, let's... Probably because there are other medical professionals that deal with using diet to manage disease, like dietitians who study clinical nutrition for at least 3 years. If you have a disease like coeliacs disease, your Dr will refer you to a dietitian to talk about food choices and so forth.

As for you academic part, many academics challenge the scientic consensus, However, it's where there challenge doesn't hold up to scrutiny that things fall apart.

@Etre evidence for what im not very sure what you are defending and i know i have friends that are general practitioners a dietitian that teaches at edin university who all bemoan the little mount of time given over to diet/nutrition on many health related academic courses. One of my friends is head anaesthetist at the royal infirmary and lectures at edin uni he constantly talks of peoples poor understanding of how dietary needs are impacting their general health

@TerryBowen

Moreover I was speaking to the inability of the AMA to look at natural means for healing human health. I took care of my mother and her cancer. This is not a pro vs con conversation. I do not feel like arguing with a person who is subjected by there conscious perception and not what the historical record states.

Natural Pathic Doctors are far more in tune with the natural symbiance between Sapiens and Biological Environments.

So yes you may speak of your Dieticians and there expertise. And you may speak of diseases that require diet changes. But how many cases are truly diet vs some anatomical malfunction? Look at cancer. The pres dr of the cancer society stated that 1. Cancer is environmental. 2. Sugar is the fuel cancer.

So why are not these types of concepts being taught to the common lower classes of society who are enflicted the most by cancer and poor diet?

Cry ye foul.

You have a lot to learn. Whose money paid for the AMA? The better question is are these people Eugenicists? Do you know what Eugenics is?

The Earth holds 7.6 billion as of 2018. By 2025 we should be around 9 billion. We can barely sustain our current coarse of resource vs pollution. Now ad in the climate factor. Droughts, loss of food production. Water!! Why did the Bushes sell off their oil interests and purchase 175k acres in Uruguay on top of a water aquifer?

Are you starting to get the picture?

Fukishima released some 4 quadrillion radio active elements into the environment. Some Isotopes have a half life of 320 years or so.

Why do so many people, lets say 3 billion, believe in a solar deity. A god/zeus who is omnipotent, when society has known for a couple thousand years what Astrotheologia was created for.

You keep believing what you have been taught! I will continue my research and studies into the square root of Historical Assimilation.

Academia is marred with those who cried foul and whom were treated like a crying wolf. Do you think the medical industry is any different?

P.S.
Where does the FDA get most of its funding from?

@TerryBowen he speaks a lot but doesnt say much eh im gonna block him he obviously from his wording feels much smarter than the evidence is providing us with all buzz and implied no actual evidence watch him die from cancer when he gets it i fear talking about etre btw google sure helps the mentally smug

@Etre If you studied world health or world politics then you wouldn't go on a full blown conspiracy ramble. Yes there are issues that negatively effect the planet but thats a result of capitalism, that American dream. I'm not defending governments or the medical establishment. However, in Europe, dietitians study just clinical nutrition for a minimum of three years. General practitioners don't need that level of expertise in nutrition, their job is to match symptoms to illness and then refer if it falls outside their expertise; If a Dr prescribed exercise to manage cardiovascular disease, I'd be pissed & write them a stern letter about how unprofessional they are with little regard for their patients health. Dr don't know, and shouldn't be expect to know everything.

Also, can you cite your cancer quack quotes because whoever said that lacks a very basic understanding of molecular biology.

@TerryBowen

The head of the American Cancer Society 2017 feb I believe, it might have been 16, and no that is right on. Cancer is environmental, Sugar is the main fuel source.

The US has the Highest cancer rates. We have a corporate industry that cares nothing more than making profit. We have a food a drug admin that works for the corporations.

Truth is Truth. No conspiracy here, it is right in front of your face. The facts, the data, the political statements. Europe is ahead of us. I think US is ranked 37th in health care by World Heath Organization.

The problem in my opinion is having a population that is under educated and not consciously aware of the environment. Then having a Government that is disproportionant of the Citizenry. The United States is borderline Facist. We are deffinately a Corptocracy. The population thinks we are a Democracy, while forgetting the pledge unto the Republic. They know not how the founding fathers despised Democracies. The Great Philosophers as well. They knew what would happen. The Greek meaning of Democracy, its etymological roots. Its right there for you Learn!
