I'm sitting outside my son's school, I have a 9am meeting with his English teacher to discuss his "attitude". At her insistence! He's trans and she's a fundamentalist Christian. I wonder how she thinks this will go? ? Am I defensive? You bet your fucking arse I am! ?. I'm going to war. This woman has picked on my son for the past 3 years, victimised him and ridiculed him, does she really think I'm going to let this carry on?

  1. Direct confrontation is Not going to help your child.
  2. IS he "disruptive"? Because she needs to teach an entire class, and one child can make it difficult for all...not saying this is the case here, just you need to hear if she has a point......
  3. I would listen carefully to her words, and ask questions, such as "what do you think We need to do?", so it becomes crystal clear whether she is exercising inappropriate bias or not.
3.And tape, openly....explain you want to remember everything, not act as if you are trying to mousetrap her!

Best get the emotions in check. Then rip her a new one. How dare she project her religious views and ignorance on a student.
3 years is a long time to have to deal with someone like this.
IMHO she is not a good teacher.

3 years is a long standing issue, it doesn't sound like it is going to get resolved at the teacher level, take it to the principal and the school counselor as there seems to be a personality conflict between the teacher and the student that cannot be resolved. If the teacher was a misogynist pig who was being unfairly critical of a female student then this wouldn't be tolerated so I see no difference.

You go girl you Tear her a new one and you can also tell her if she doesn't stop you're going to seek legal action

3 years? Sounds like it's time for a change of teacher and or school

lawyer up and make sure she knows its her not the school you will be going after if it continues im sure some of the trans support groups will hve legal aid teams who are used to this kind of fucking shit good luck

Excellent suggestion , but know up front , this will make things even more difficult for a time . Check with the school principal to see if there's a chance you can have him transferred to a different class . He needs out from under , three years ago .

Let us know how you get on I am really interested my son was often in trouble because he was too honest to tell lies - h had a hard time at school just for being himself and he wasnt a troublemaker , just an innocent He is fifty now so I don't need to worry about him but just interested in how teaching has evolved or not.

Please let us know how this pans out. I'm wondering more about the teacher's 'attitude' than the childs. The last thing your child needs is trauma from a teacher. Perhaps a change of schools?

I’d love to be fly on the wall! Don’t lose your cool, but don’t hold back either, just do it calmly. Please let us know how it goes later. We are all rooting for you, you know you are rational, she on the other hand believes in the supernatural. She should leave her superstitions outside of the classroom when she comes to teach your son and other children, and she needs to be called out for picking on your son because of his sexual orientation.

My advice? Be nice to her. Smile. Be professional and have some questions ready for her to answer.

From now, document everything. Record that meeting on your telephone mic recorder.

  1. you and your child keep a diary of any incidents.
  2. If any recording can be done, it’s great. Bring a teddy bear that can record sound.
  3. Contact ACLU about whether this constant discrimination is a crime.
  4. is this woman causing you and your child emotional distress that can be verified by a doctor in writing? That would be useful to have.

Get advice from a charity like this
[stonewall.org.uk]

Never get angry, just collect evidence, get advice, and sting her later.

I am a total bitch if required. If I had a trans child, and their school was damaging his self esteem, I would be full on mummy-bear claws and teeth.

I would put the recording device on the desk.

@UUNJ it would stop her during the meeting. But could it intensify the classroom conduct? I personally would stay under the radar and pounce.

@Livia In the US, recordings made secretly can’t be used in court, right? Recording something secretly doesn’t accomplish much.

@UUNJ depends on the state vs.recordings, all in how it was made. Putting a tape recorder in plain view would certainly be legal.

I agree about keeping your cool. Attorney's have always told me to document everything. I agree about recording the conversation. I have a recorder on my phone. If the conversation becomes at all unproductive get the heck out of there and then as other's here have said communicate with the school counselor and principle. Demand a transfer.

Gee my friend, good luck. Make a stand but keep in mind, not to self inflict more harm into the mix. Your reaction is coming from a good place, no doubt...just don't dig a deeper hole. I hope this makes sense. Cheers
