Others I considered include Pearl Jam (top 3 if someone DQs Hendrix), the Black Crowes, The Byrds, and The Who (who at one point I'd have put up at the top).

Damn, quite a few of my favorites there as well.
Disclaimer: My musical tastes constantly change as new talent emerges and I like every style of music. So these three could be off the list if I had to write this comment over again.

i cannot name three with any confidence that they're the TOP three from all the bands i love, but some spring to mind: fleetwood mac before it became a girl band; buffalo springfield; the beatles. there is so much more, though.

(Im using the strict definition of band to narrow it down some, if I included solo artists like troubadors and behemoths of jazz, blues, and soul whose bands frequently changed, I'd have to give you minimum 3 black guys, 3 white guys, 3 black ladies n 3 white ladies just from inability to pick 3 favorites total lol. I can barely pick 3 favorite bands from each state or genre ?)
