I'm less fearful of death now because I'm a agnostic/atheist . Several years ago I collapsed with a cardiac condition which has since been resolved. I woke up the following day in a intensive care unit . I remembered collapsing to the floor and then nothing , just a vacuum . The was no judgment , no light , no punishment , no sensation. If that's death I'm really not bothered or fearful of the day . Enjoy life as much as you can by being considerate to others as they also have one life and why would you want to make that a unpleasant experience for them ? The kinder you are to others the more rewarding life is . All schools should ban religious education and teach humanity , the world would be a much better place to live .

Good luck on that proposition! The Religious people have the money and major influence! And they do not hesitate in telling others what their GOD, expects and they got that information, ‘straight from the horse’s mouth!’ Plus, it cannot be disputed, because it is written in the Bible, by men who GOD, gave it all to! Non-believers will need to stand more firmly against being left out and discriminated against! We have a right to be here, same as any religious person, that ever lived! Teaching about all religions in school is an uphill struggle at the moment!

I lost my fear of death when i realize there no hell or heaven... So i kinda feel you on that point

There’s no need to be scared of death, I hear it is very restful.

There are days that I wish I’d get sick, and just have the struggle taken away from me.

I honestly can’t see living past 80. There doesn’t seem like a point. Once I lose my mobility and my eyes, why continue breathing?

My plan is to jump off a bridge on my 81st birthday, like maude from Harold and Maude. Makes retirement finance planning easier!

I have a similar outlook to you , I would hate to be a burden on any of my family. When the is no longer a quality of life I see no point in carrying on .
My plan is disposable BBQ S placed in a unclosed area , carbon monoxide poisoning for me.

I am scared of death. As an atheist, I have never had any reason to believe that there is any kind of afterlife, and that truly is scary to me. I don't want to "not be", to stop existing. If eternal life isn't possible, I hope we will at least reach a point where we can transfer our consciousness onto a computer or something, and exist in that state...

I'm sorry of your fear , but it's honestly very easy to die . The is nothing at all , no awareness. I'm quite looking forward to it

Honestly mate it's fine , you have nothing to fear .
It's just like a very deep sleep with no dreams.
I actually felt very comforted that the is nothing and no one to answer too.

I have no illusions re how easy it is. And once I'm dead, I won't even know it, because I'll be dead. But from the point of view of someone who is alive - I wouldn't want to "not be". I want to be, for as long as I can

You do not want too not be you, and that is because you are here to think about it. After death you are no longer capable of thinking, the energy source feeding the brain stops and the brain dies. Without a source of fuel nothing exists in our reality. If you turn off the light, there is no light to recall as if it does not exist. When you go under for surgery, your body is cut open and toyed with, Even the heaviest deep sleeper will wake up when opened up. But post surgery shows you were not there, felt nothing and were not aware of time. Without time nothing exist. Nothing. Eternal nothingness

This is nothing more than sentimental BS - if there's nothing after we die and I believe that there isn't - why does it matter? Why enjoy life as much as you can - can't remember it after you die. I had a similar experience to yours and what I brought away from it, is that life is a cruel sick joke. After I die it doesn't matter how rewarding life was, it doesn't matter that I visited the pyramids - it doesn't matter if I was a prick to everyone I met and if there's no hope for taking all of our accumulated experiences to another level of existence (there isn't) the world isn't a much better place. In fact, we're no different than a dung beetle or any of the other lower life forms - expect they have the benefit of not having our ability to over think.

It matters because we live in the moment , laughing is a pleasure , beauty it to be enjoyed , nature is wonderful to behold .
I'm extremely fortunate and get pleasure from various activities , food , excercise, my kids etc .
Yes sometimes I have bad days but I always know tomorrow could be great !
I'm lucky , I don't live in a poor country with poor health care , high crime or have a job I hate or no job at all. I don't live in a country that Donald trump is president and represents the country , I don't live in a country that guns are freely available to any nut job who lives in the neighborhood, I don't live in a country that if you get cancer you fucked if you don't have health insurance . That makes me feel fortunate , I live near a beautiful beach and woodland which I walk through every day and smile as my dog runs through the leaves and plays with other dogs .
I'm sorry to hear you sound very unhappy , perhaps see your doctor for some anti depressants.

@Lemonhead526 I clearly don't live in your country - kudos to you - doesn't offer me much insight. Comes off as na na goo goo - a playground phrase from kids in the 3rd grade.

@SLBushway lol , I can't help but go out of my way to happy . I'm as pleasant as I can be to others , cos we are only here once.
I can recommend a excellent book for you to read " the chimp paradox " written by a psychiatrist. I've not always been happy , but you can make life worth enjoying if you put the effort in .
I've previously suffered with severe anxiety , depression , suicidal thoughts .
I now take anti depressants which have worked wonders , I keep active and talk to people.
Happiness is internal and it's all about mind management.

While I'm agnostic about the possibility of any after life, I think religion plays some role though not perfect. I was once talking with someone about how religion is a myth, my argument to him was very convincing; his response was: "does it mean we should now go ahead and cheat people since there would be no account calling by god". That's when I realized that the people that invented these religions are clever, religion was very necessary in keeping people in line. Not everyone has the capacity to have decent morality informed by compassion and empathy without some sort of religion

For me, I've found that living morally leaves me feeling more positive than doing things that are harmful to others. I had to leave behind a religious morality to get to the point where I could understand that. Previously, my morality was based on the promise of post death benefits and so I wasn't tuning into the pros and cons of this life. When I could no longer hang my hope on a pleasant afterlife, my morality shifted from a to do list of things representing "God's will" to things that truly bring me happiness and don't intentionally harm others. I would imagine the person you were talking to was in the mindset of working toward rewards from heaven and so it would be logical to assume you could be selfish and hurtful to others without suffering negative consequences. But I think if he were to truly consider the possibility of a godless existence, he might eventually discover that there are other good reasons to do the morally right thing.

On a side note, the most corrupt things I've heard about were all justified by religious beliefs. I might not have all the facts but from my current perspective, belief in God is more likely to lead to harmful behavior than lack of belief in God.

I understand and respect your view but disagree .
Religious people can equally carry out morally unjustifiable acts , a multitude of priests have sexually assaulted children under their care , nuns have physically and mentally tortured in schools and children homes ( I've spoken to victims)
We all have a moral compass and know the difference between right and wrong and religion doesn't make a blind bit of difference.
We have empathy to other humans that's why atheists give money to charity to help the lest fortunate.
Humanity should be taught in education systems throughout the world and religion band as it causes irrational hatred of another groups , in India the are battles in the streets with murder between Christians and Muslims all because of make believe.
Thank you for your response
I'm always interested in people's views

@Bobby9 the good news is more and more people are abandoning religion on factual evidence. Only last century non believers were treated unfairly , suffering discrimination.
The is a excellent book called " factfulness" written by a Swedish doctor . Who debunks the world is getting worse with verifiable statistics, world mortality rates , education, health care and the rapidly decreasing death rates in natural disasters.
Yet when the likes of the jahovas witnesses knock on your door peddling untruths they state the world is getting worse . Factually that's not true .

@Meili 100% agree with everything you said
