The World's Newest Major Religion: No Religion
As secularism grows, atheists and agnostics are trying to expand and diversify their ranks. More people than ever before are identifying as atheist, agnostic, or otherwise nonreligious, with potentially world-changing effects.

Somethings off about this map, it shows a large portion of Russia as Muslim, and a large portion of the Middle East as Christian.

Click on the link, it explains that.

A very good article let down by a misleading headline. It at least attempts a global picture and points out the difference between USA and the rest of the advanced west. No-one in the West outside of America any longer believes or would dare assert that they fight wars with god on their side. Equally, with the exception of a few humanist organisations whose membership is small in number, most non-religious people are not involved in actively promoting atheism, they simply drift away from religion as it becomes less relevant to their lives. Their are vibrant movements to challenge archaic laws based on religious teachings around body autonomy and equality rights but these are not part of an atheism vs religion agenda. The vast majority of non-believers are not engaged in trying to establish atheism as an alternative 'religion'. In fact to most that would seem ludicrous

How can something that is, by definition, NON religious in nature and thought be classified as a Religion in the first place?
To be an ATHEIST simply means, by definition, to a person WITHOUT a God or Gods, i.e. denying the existence of ANY and ALL Supreme, Omnipotent Entities/Deities what-so-ever. the word Atheist comes from the combination of 2 Ancient Greek terms being; "A- without, not having, and, Theos - God/Gods, etc. ergo A-Theist simply means denying, refusing to acknowledge, refusing to worship ANY God/Gods what-so-ever and since almost ALL Religions MUST have some kind of central point/being, etc, upon which the adorations/worships are focused then Atheists, being NON religious, have none of those focal points thus Non-Religion is NO religion in any shape form or definition.

“Organizing atheists is like herding cats,”
says Stephanie Guttormson.

Favorite quote in this article!

...and Democrats 😉

Herding the Religious is far more simpler and easier than even herding sheep, for herding sheep one needs at least ONE man and a couple of well trained dogs, whereas to herd the religious all one needs to do is to tell them that it is Sunday, Church awaits them, bring your wallets/purses, wear your 'Sunday Best' and they'll flock along willingly.

I don’t see it as “atheists and agnostics are trying to expand,” as much as the awakening of humanity. It’s always been far easier to fool than to educate people, but the internet is leveling the playing field… With that - we’re on the cutting edge 😉

As education becomes less of a luxury and more of an excepted human right in under developed nations this trend will continue. It's difficult to be thinking of getting a higher education (which invariably leads to less superstition ruling your life) when you are still walking 5 or 10 miles a day for clean water and firewood.

...totally agree- here alot of gov. funding
is handed to"charities", which are religious
based/this is do to increase (in other words
government does subsidize religion)likewise
in education.

When someone states that they are "none" or "no religion", doesn't mean that they do not believe in god. It is saying that they have no religious affiliation. They most likely are NOT a-theist or agnostic but are theist. Just my opinion.

Perfect! I was going to say the same thing but you said it better.

My children are "none" but they tell you they "still believe in their own way." My answer is that this is what has caused so many religions in the world in the first place.

Yah, not so much. I'm an atheist because I see myself as a free thinker. I'd be betraying those values if I went about telling others how to think. I do believe in education and the power of knowledge. So the three rules are don't hurt anyone, don't break anything, and have a good time. Life is an adventure, not a guided tour.

...meanwhile your taxes are being
used against your freedom of thought

Boy, did they get Trump wrong.

To be fair, he's really leaned hard into the evangelicals since the election. Basically jerking them off with both hands now.

...gotta give his voting
base "some honey"-some politicians
are are religious first/some are
just enablerers...

In the internet age where things can be instantly fact checked... i'm surprised atheism hasn't spread more quickly than it already has.

And all god's people say, amen.

...super YEAH,why not?

@icolan you and @matias are both right. The internet is useful for fact finding, but only if you're willing to be a critical thinker and use reliable resources. Otherwise you're as likely to reinforce false perspectives as you are to correct them...
Therefore, in light of this new information, i do understand why non belief is not moving faster because of the internet. See? I'm using bayesian analysis

no we're not. it's happening and i don't think any of us are against it, but we're TRYING to diversify? raise you're hand if you're trying to do that....

...I'm on board-i do have a social concscence

@BBJong maybe i should make myself clearer. i was talking about diversifying atheism, specifically, since that is what i was responding to. i am in favor of diversity, overall, to the extent that i am willing to work for it. i am in favor of diversity among atheists too but i just don't see it as something to drill down and specifically work for. if i am working for overall diversity, why do i have to specifically apply it to atheism? and that is what the post said. it wasn't referring to overall diversity. it was very specific: atheism trying to diversify ranks. i don't think of us as ranks. i am not going to wake up one day and say "there aren't enough native american atheists" or "there aren't enough bulgarian atheists." i may wake up and say "there aren't enough atheists."
