Well if they gave people choices between religious and not religious people as the actors and the people taking the survey were all religious they would certainly pick the non-religious as the bad actors. Here's the best example: Who committed these bad acts, family members of yours or outsiders? Gee who do you think they'd pick? Atheists have done nothing other than not being part of the group, just like the outsiders you picked as the bad actors instead of your family members.

It's because most of them are sociopaths that can't conceive of being moral without the fear of eternal punishment or the promise of eternal reward e.g. anyone who doesn't fear Divine Judgment must be evil. Truly fucking terrifying to realize that about the majority of society at large.

We scare the hell out of theists. They are afraid of recognizing or admitting that they are responsible for their behavior -- not some imaginary friend in an imaginary cloudbank. I think they are projecting (as someone already said below) -- they themselves might behave that way if they didn't have to worry about eternal damnation. So they don't get any credit for their good deeds -- they're externally caused. We, on the other hand, do get credit for the good -- as well as blame for the bad -- because our own internal moral compass directs our actions.

Surprise, even other atheists answered the questions in a like manner. It would seem that they consider themselves of a lesser moral code as do others. The latter was a complete surprise to the investigators ( Pew 2017 report).People associate immorality with Atheism.
