Trump says wind power won't work because "it only blows sometimes."

And that's coming from a stable genius!

Trump has identified one of the major downsides to wind power for electricity.

Electricity is at peak demand in July and August when it's 100 degrees with not any breeze to cool you off.

Everyone is running their air conditioners full blast.

Good luck powering all of that with windmills.

Windmills are at best a supplement to more reliable forms of energy like coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear fissile materials.

Solar actually makes more sense than wind from that perspective because when it's 100 degrees, the sun is most likely shining brightly.

Electricity is generated by wind turbines not windmills. Of course Trump would make an inane comment like this as he promised to help the ailing coal industry.
The UK has invested heavily in wind power generation and has at times produced up to 40% of it's power requirements. In Scotland where the majority of the turbines are located in excess of 100% of requirement has been produced . By contrast the USA produces around 6% by wind generation.
Generation by fossil fuels is being phased out in most countries although nuclear generation will continue a bit longer.

Wind and solar are essential to keep the lights burning in the future and as electricity storage capabilities improve they will probably be the dominant power source.

@Moravian Scotland has a much higher ratio of wind energy to cooling degree days than the USA.

@BD66 Very true but that is no excuse for relying mainly on fossil fuels for power generation

@Moravian well stated!

Because of course there is no way of storing any generated power....okay, except for batteries, you fool.

@AnneWimsey I am not sure who that was directed at but much research is being done in to power storage and it will be essential in the future when fossil fuels are either used up or have been phased out because of climate change

@AnneWimsey How many batteries will it take to store enough energy to keep all the air conditioners in LA going on a day with no wind?

@Dyl1983 You fools want to rely on technology that is 2000 years old to generate electricity, and you are laughing at me? A wind turbine is a specific type of windmill used to generate electricity. Here's a reference from wikipedia:

By the 1930s, windmills were widely used to generate electricity on farms in the United States where distribution systems had not yet been installed, built by companies such as Jacobs Wind, Wincharger, Miller Airlite, Universal Aeroelectric, Paris-Dunn, Airline, and Winpower. The Dunlite Corporation produced turbines for similar locations in Australia.[citation needed]

@Dyl1983 Wind mills turn wind energy into rotational energy. Wind turbines are a subset of wind mills that turn that rotational energy into electrical energy. It's similar to my saying "Watch out that dog will bite you" and you would respond with "That's not a dog, that's a German Shepherd!"

@Dyl1983

I had expected intelligent discussions on this board, but it has been a great disappointment:

Definition of windmill (Entry 1 of 2)

1a : a mill or machine operated by the wind usually acting on oblique vanes or sails that radiate from a horizontal shaft especially : a wind-driven water pump or electric generator

[merriam-webster.com]

@Dyl1983 Look at the definition in the Merriam Webster Dictionary:

Definition of windmill (Entry 1 of 2)

1a : a mill or machine operated by the wind usually acting on oblique vanes or sails that radiate from a horizontal shaft especially : a wind-driven water pump or electric generator

So a windmill may generate electricity, it may pump water, or it may grind grain.

This is equivalent to my saying "That is a dog"

Some windmills generate electricity. Those windmills can be called wind turbines or wind energy converters.

Some dogs are huskies, beagles, and German shepherds.

This is equivalent to you saying "That is not a dog, it is a German shepherd"

@Dyl1983 Your profile says you enjoy weed. I'm afraid you might be enjoying too much of it.
