Are we (progressives) giving Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez too much praise? I think so. I like her a lot, and I think her words and actions reflect many of my own. But she's a young freshman Congresswoman. All good things. We need fresh faces and new ideas in Congress. Yet she is still learning the ropes. I want her to keep that fire and make some serious changes. But putting her in a superhero costume is too much. (See [theblaze.com] .) I don't even like the nickname "AOC". Thankfully, she doesn't seem to have a swollen head from all this admiration. But we need to tone it down a bit so she can do the job we hired her for. What's your thoughts?

If she were old enough to be prez, I would want her running for prez. I hope that by the time she is old enough that she will run and still be highly regarded as well as still uncorrupted.

I like her a lot. I think Ocasio will give the GOP something to lie about for a long time to come. On Fridays I tune in to conservative talk radio and hear the strangest things about her. Some of it is so funny that you do not want to be drinking anything while you listen. When it comes to AOC they just keep on making it up.

what's wrong with praise? you say she hasn't got a swollen head. so i see no down side. no one stays long in a superhero costume and she herself isn't trying it on, so i'm not worried.

You must know that The Blaze is Glenn Beck's thing?

Waa, waa, waa, someone call this guy a whambulance. What have YOU done lately? Pretty easy to criticize those making a difference while you sit around with your thumb up your butt.

I am not criticizing her. I am criticizing OTHERS who deify her.

@Buxx What exactly are you looking to achieve with said criticism? Does it serve any comstructive purpose or are you just being a whiny hater? Because that's what I see. You think you can do better, by all means show us what you got.
Sick to death of those who do nothing but complain about others who are making an effort. Get up and do something.

@OpposingOpposum “We don't get harmony when everybody sings the same note. Only notes that are different can harmonize. The same is true with people.”
― Steve Goodier

@Buxx blah, blah, blah. Sick and tired of people sitting on their asses and complaining about those who are actually making an effort.

You are confusing media hype with the actual person

No. My question IS about the media hype, not the actual person.

@Buxx ooookkkaaaayyy, and you pay attention to media hype because....??????

@AnneWimsey Because what sparks a flame is seldom as interesting as how the fire spreads.

@Buxx and about as truthful, IMO

Too much praise? What had she done not to garner praise? At the very least, she's saying things that need to be said. Is anybody else? What's the job we hired her for? Waiting her turn? Meekly defer to her elders? Fuck that

I don't give a flying F one way or another about AOC. I just think it's funny how she's riled up the right so much. I can see why people like her, she's our millennial congressperson. It's not that I don't like her, I just have no opinion on her, and agree that the superhero costumes and Netflix documentaries are a little too much.

I had no idea it was this bad. I think we can officially say that Socrates was right about democracy. The only thing we have as a take away from this is the effectiveness of social media as a propaganda tool.

@creative51 There is a huge difference between supporting a cause and then running for office to support that cause and being a political puppet. Obviously it isn't just AOC, It basically all of them. Corruption is a huge unspoken issue in American politics, and the fact that you are passively supporting it with your willful ignorance is quite unnerving.

Corruption like this is dangerous because it bypasses governing systems designed to prevent misuse of authority, such as term limits and campaign donation caps. This loophole is one of many methods that individuals who may not have the best interests of the people in mind. An elected politician can still refuse to aid those who paid for his campaign to help him get elected, and they often do. A puppet won't know how to do that, or maybe won't even think it's possible.

George Washington was a general who fought for the freedom of this nation, how can you assert that he was being manipulated through special interest groups? His campaign cost $0, because he didn't do any. Why would he have needed to accept lobbyists money in exchange for particular policies?

@creative51 That's a two way street.

I love AOC! Why should we retrained our love and praise for her? Millions loved JFK much the same way... The only difference here is that she's not a white male .. ! She's very intelligent... Especially at her age...

I agree, and my question is more a response to how WE react to her work rather than the work itself. This is more a question about us than her.

2

I like her too and she has good ideas and intentions but enough with the endless praise already. Some news outlets, like TYT for one, are ready to canonize her. They fawn over her like she's the second coming of Jesus Christ.

So to speak.

I believe she is a pawn in the political game, She entered politics more or less by chance, wrote a bill that destroyed her own career before it got off the ground, and gets tons of media coverage for being generally eccentric. I think she has already passed her prime, and I don't think her odds of salvaging her political career are very good. Her only hope is to become useful to other politicians for her demagoguery.

Destroyed her own career? Passed her prime?? Seriously? What planet are you from? It is clear we can't have a conversation, so I'll go elsewhere.

@Healthydoc70 Watch that video posted by PBuck0145. Everything I said was based on my own observations, but I underestimated just how bad the situation with AOC was. Politicians who come in to solve problems first and get reelected second don't survive long. That's why so many are so concerned with not making anyone angry. AOC doesn't care because she isn't a politician.

If we can have old, stupid, and careless, we can have young, bold, and visionary. The abbreviation AOC is in the vein of JFK, MLK, LBJ, etc., and I find it refreshing.

It's a dark time for the rebellion. We need a bit of light.

(And this from someone who would have agreed with you a few months ago. But hearing her speak with the fire in her belly is hopeful. She's a "true believer," as they once termed it on "The West Wing". Maybe it's a bit naive, but at least it isn't cynical, self-dealing narcissism looking to make as much money off as much misery as possibly before collapsing into the grave.)

She and her new cohorts need to slow it down. Social Security, Medicare even healthcare took FOREVER to get through Congress. It's nice to have ideas regarding this whole Green New Deal stuff but nothing happens overnight in the U.S. government and all she's accomplished is scaring people on the other side. It will take YEARS to accomplish what she wants if ever. She needs to learn from history and how Congress works. Find a compassionate ear on the other side of the isle like Kennedy did with healthcare for years and try and get it done that way.

lerlo Level 8 May 19, 2019

Perhaps, but it has to start somewhere and by someone.

@jlynn37 I agree it has to start but I think you also agree that nothing happens overnight in Congress...baby steps unfortunately.

Slow it down? Are you a republican? Green new deal stuff? You have marked yourselfi must be a capitalist! You sound like mitch mcconnell. We had better speed it up! Or there won't be an earth to live on and if you don't see that, you have severe issues.

@Healthydoc70 and you apparently don't know how our government works but thanks for the name calling--it's the go-to on this site when someone voices an opinion someone doesnt agree with. Ok big shot exactly how long do you think its going to take to do all you want done? A week? A month? Any changes to industry needed? At what cost and to whom? And you may be healthy but you're blind--show me anywhere in my comment where I said it shouldn't be done. You have ZERO idea how and how long it will take do the the NEW GREEN DEAL STUFF. Until you do--all the name calling in the world won't get it done. Perhaps a course in U.S. government for you in the meantime?

OK. lerlo. you make some strong assertions you have no basis for. You don't know me and I don't know you. You speak like a true capitalist republican with the typical questions. You claim I have no idea, and you do??? So calling you a capitalist and a republican is name calling. Civilization has no choice. Not doing anything is a choice. I bow to the conviction that you are correct because you say so. Have a nice glass of mercury water and some Roundup salad. You and I don't share the same truth, so a discussion is impossible. Futile to respond since I won't engage any further in this insanity.

@Healthydoc70 and people with no facts always duck the argument...as expected

I say turn her loose on them. she shows them for the greedy fools they are.

I seem to recall a whole lot of people saying they supported 45 because he
was an "outsider", who was going to "shake things up".

How is AOC ANY different?
At least she is making her efforts on behalf of the people.
She's trying to enact helpful, long-term plans.
All 45 has been doing are things to help himself and other "rich" people.

Sure, she is completely imperfect, but at least she is trying to do the "right" things.
It's called "trial and error", folks.
I was still making a shitton of mistakes when I was 29, and I wasn't even in
Congress.
Hell, at 29, I hadn't even started college yet.

I'm totally going to continue to give her the benefit of the doubt, and I'm not even a democrat, or a liberal.

1

I’m guessing she can both handle the fame and do her job

4

It all depends if you just want the status quo to remain or if you seriously want change in 'merca. I want change and it will only happen with people like AOC.

6

I LOVE Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She needs positive feedback, especially with constant, hateful attacks from Republicans.

The idea of "giving too much praise" comes from the Christian belief, "Spare the rod and spoil the the child."

Everyone needs positive feedback.

1

Her ideas are mostly idiotic!

zesty Level 7 May 19, 2019

Your opinion is noted as is mine.

When your air, your water and your food makes you even sicker than it does now and the planet is dead, let me me know how "your" ideas work out for you, zesty!

@Healthydoc70 When the planet is dead - no more problems for us! Lol Seriously, reading your bio, I worked in most of the countries you visited. Did you have a chance to talk to locals? Freely, without translators (they work for the security services). Could you observe the extent they don't care about the environment because they don't have enough to eat? These are civilized, European countries. Check out real shit holes like communist China or India. Let them start basic environmental policies.
