How do you respond when somebody you have never met in person and only exchanged a sentence or two with online suddenly tells you they are "honest?"

That's odd.

If the statement came out of the blue, I would probably probe him as to the reason why he said that. I would also verify EVERYTHING he says to the best of my ability.

My last boyfriend insisted he was the most honest person on Earth, and that he didn't tolerate anyone telling lies. Interestingly, he never believed anything I told him, but believed his lying girlfriend (I'm almost always in poly relationships). He would also lie constantly to his mother, but tell me that he only lies to her and no one else (he didn't want to risk losing his inheritance from her).

It took me forever to get out of his grasp. I will never put myself in that position again.

when people say they are really honest or tell story and say they arent lying, I think it is strange. I just don't find most people say that. I assume people are honest unless I find out otherwise

Honest people don't need to tell you they are honest

It could be a verbal tic. Like "I'm a very good driver" from the old Rain Man film. Seriously, someone making this claim has probably been called on something he or she already told you before, and this looks like a (clumsy) pre-emptive strike of some kind.

I immediately scrutinize everything I do know about them because that is a bright red flag that they probably are not.

This is my immediate thought, as well.

I typically will trust someone until you show me I can't. Then hit the road. That is not to say I'm giving my car keys to a stranger.

"Watchers"

Read the posts pinned at the top of the group about Online Scams. That will give you a general idea of what you're up against online.

For some reason that term 'Honest' is used a lot by Romance Scammers.

Maybe they admitting they were "on EST."

2

i tend not to trust them. why did they even think to say it unless they thought you doubted them, or might doubt them? because they're about to try to con you in some way!

“Congratulations, now tell me the truth”

Reply 'thank you for throwing the red flag so obviously'.

Well, you've no way of knowing how honest the person may or not be considering your limited contact with them. If they don't get that, walk away now.

3

It is very interesting how many YouTube videos are titled "The Truth About ... ", most of which contain inaccurate and/or highly biased information. "Alternate facts".

4

do not believe what that person says

1

I would just ignore the comment.

I’d think they were not honest but projecting. Ugh, I’ve not had great luck online, lol.

1

Not enough information to give an opinion.

2

What does your inner self say one or two sentences or conversations doesn't IMO call for a, oh I'm honest.

2

I'd ask them why they have a need to declare their honesty ?

2

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

4

I'd say, "Mmm-hmm", And not much else.

1

There is the one way....stick around to give them opportunity to prove it

@Cast1es Nothing to wonder here, IamOptimistic 😊

Believe me... just like Trump. Why say that? Sounds shady.
