Has anyone ever attended a Meet Up Atheist/Freethinker group?

I belong to several. Some local, some across the country as I travel for a living. Look at Meetup.com Also consider looking for social groups that are about other things such as book clubs, travel, language, arts. There are social venues for those willing. Some groups i belong to can get a little bit religious, you know praying before a meal, well, I just take it in stride. Cant change the world. Sometimes its just about avoiding the hermit thing.

My home has become too much of a soft shell so I'm venturing out more. Not yet. But I will. I found three groups to check out. Thanks for sharing.

I am currently in the South, not enough agnostics/atheists for a group 😟

That is disappointing. I'm in California. The Central Valley. There aren't a lot of us here either.

@ElusiveMoby Outside of the major cities Florida is like Alabama with more old people. There are mega churches, strip mall churches, medium sized ones. Apparently Billy Bob and Bubba are not very fond of liberal, atheist feminists. All good, I could never sleep with a guy that wears camo and flip flops.

@MizJ I see your point😂

I have visted several. I have found all of them to be great groups of people!

I belong to two local groups. It's a great way to interact with like minds. We have several different kinds of sub-groups such as a book club, a dining group, and a philosophical group.

3

No, but I would like to.

I hope you give it a try then.

@ElusiveMoby That's a good idea. I am a bit busy right now but when I come back from my trip I shall give it some thought and try to arrange something.

Yes, I'm a member of one. I should probably try to attend some events.

Yes I love my Freethinker Group which evolved from the Atheist/Agnostic Group I just joined. We also have an Edutainment Group which is an offshoot of Freethinkers where we pick topics, invite speakers and attend events locally of interest. My favorite groups and people.

I'd really like to get involved with a local group. I'd really like to go to conferences too. I'm now at the confidence level of traveling alone to attend a conference so I just may do that. Thanks for your comment.

The local humanist group here is over 20 miles away; full of elderly retirees; discuss the same few topics; and resist ideas to modernize or appeal to younger people.

I tried for a couple years and went faithfully but it was too boring to give up my Sundays for

2

There is a local one on Meetup, it seems to be the same 3 members......although the "# of attendees" on Meetup is unreliable.

I want to, but there are crazy people out there who might target us. Online is fine.

I used to be scared and hide, then I realixed that if I do they win. Now I am very open online and off.

@DavidLaDeau I used to judge people for not making the same decisions as me but now I let people in a different situation live without my judgment

@Lucy_Fehr David didn't judge anyone. I suggest you not try to shame people for what they haven't done.

@rainmanjr How do you know what he meant? His comment looked judgmental but he is free to elaborate for himself in which case, I would be happy to apologize to him.

I have. It was in Normal, IL. I liked all the people I met there, but once I met my girlfriend, I no longer had time to go to those meetings.

@mjb007bond No, she's a Catholic I met on Match.com

2

No, but I would like to. The basic idea of this for me is that I do not think I have the time. The real thing is that I am not organized in that way.

Perhaps we will someday have beer, we can call it a meet up!

2

Don't know if this counts, I went to Richard Dawkins lecture.
And I went to see Roy Zimmerman and met him.

If thats the case Shelly Segal is an awesome person to hang out with!

I have attended about 9 get-togethers of different sorts and it was all really great.

Were there very many people there...?

@Bamabread64 all the get togethers had different faces each time and familiar faces. I still have to meet with up with a lot of them. The entire group Johannesburg group is on telegram communication (so we share and post) and some have their own groups outside of Johannesburg. ...it has been insightful and enriching.

@Bamabread64 there were many enough. We're also invited to visit different areas. There's an admin person or two involved with the different set-up. We had a great day out at a nature reserve in September last year, a xmas party last month and also attended a talk last year in August by someone from the Richard Dawkins foundation. ...so I see new faces all the time.

I used to, but there aren't any where I live anymore. I tried to run one once, but there just wasn't a lot of interest on my small island. Hence my popping in here so often!

Oh come on -- you don't think we believe that you live on an island, do you?

@GlyndonD Let's join her on that island and meet up.

@ElusiveMoby Yes, I'm happy to meet up with any agnostics who visit Kauai. We have great hiking, biking, snorkeling, stand up paddling, boat trips, helicopter rides, live music, sunset watching and moon-rise parties. Many opportunities to share experiences and a chat!

2

Yep - I met my best friends at our atheist meetup!

2

We used to have one in the mid 90s we billed it as a discussion group.

Great fun, the evangelists and know-it-all’s soon disappear once they are called out.

Evangelists would infiltrate 😂🤣😂?

@ElusiveMoby Evangelists of anything!

1

Yes, there are groups in Visalia

1

No but we could do a live video chat.

1

I attended a Freethinkers group in Florida until I moved to Arizona. I've never heard of one here, and that's very disappointing.

Keep looking keep asking and if your groups are too far away pay the 5 buck$ a month to be the host ....just choose your favorite bar or bistro with a room or big table free for the reservation

1

Try Meetup to find one

1

We have one here in Rochester and I'm a member.

Great NY Atheists all along I-90
