I'm watching the start of trumps impeachment trial I'm struck by the conversation about will Republicans vote for certain rules or actions due to their vulnerability for reelection. There doesn't seem to be any mention of voting for justice or the preservation of our constitution. I don't think I've ever seen such disregard for truth or fairness before Senate leader McConnell and trump have collaborated to make this trial a farce and the Senate members chances of reelection over justice.

Remember as we watch the next 3 days we are one news cycle away from changing everything. Not saying it will happen but one substantial story could shift the narrative and his ass is on the hot seat untill the inevitable😄

New revelations are surfacing daily. I do hope the spineless Republican trump apologists end up regretting their cowardes.

Anything to get them to do the right thing. Good that they are scared about their positions. They should be. They full well, remember the mid-term elections and the same thing could very well happen to them. Even if tweetle doo wins if the Senate goes Democrat. he will be tarred and feathered! The will have to corrupt two branches in the next election and that would simply be too much.

From the time the constitution was adopted until 1913, Senators were appointed by state legislatures rather than elected, which the founders saw as a way to allow them to focus on legislating rather than politics. Apparently one reason for the change was because the legislatures often had trouble agreeing on candidates, which led to there being vacancies. I'm quite sure id rather have vacancies than this shitshow we now have

Justice is not what the Rethuglicans want, or have cared about for ages. The Tea Party, which helped congress get to this sad, sorry point, was the baby of the Koch Bros., who are/were out and out racist elitists!

Another farce and another dog and pony show. None of it about our country. It is only about party and power. This is why I am not watching, but I can catch it later from some sources that watch and report on it.

Unfortunately the media has fallen for the same narrative, when the news became a source of money caused by ratings it was the end of objective journalism, now it's all about strident news delivery in the pursuit of exclusives, no objectivity, and tbe result was showy anchors rather than impartial ones, no balls, the appeal to more by letting people choose their own truth rather than "providing the truth and just facts." That's why you see lying assholes like Kellyane Conway who gives the counterpoint to what some democrat says. But what about reporting the truth? Walter Cronkite or David Brinkley were trusted anchors because they reported the truth, now it's all this is what this person says and that is what the other says. How about you, the news media, do your job and report the truth!!! We have only ourselves to blame.

We always knew he planned to wriggle out of it . Money = power , even if he got a lot of it illegally . Do hope they got their ducks in a row and he doesn't get the chance to bribe , cover up , lie , power pressure hiw way out of it .

It boggles the mind! It is as if we live in two different Countries! GOP Justice, is what they want it to be...be-damned with the Country itself and be-damned with the rights and freedoms guaranteed to the people! This is one day I wish a building would fall down on the heads of ‘the evil doers!’ How can this many people fall...THIS FAR? @DenoPenno I've watched some arguments from his corner. They're doing a tap dance for him. All drama, no truth! Are we really in 2020? These guys have no standards. I am in complete agreement.
I've already called my senators this morning, although I'm sure it did no good at all.

This farce is signaling the end of our republic.
I'm not even sure if the election in November is going to matter.
The Electoral College isn't going anywhere, and the republicans are still
working their asses off to continue to control that.

I see really bad things coming on the horizon.
I don't even think I'm being negative, just completely realistic.
Look at how McConnell and the republicans have packed the courts.
McConnell gave 45 all his picks, 45 appointed them, and the Senate confirmed them.
Usually along a party-line vote, too.

We are irrevocably fucked.
I really believe that.

It may be true...but the fight for ‘right’ will continue! When enough of the GOP, get caught up in their own evil web, they will be sorry, but too late! The principals supported by trump and his goons, will come to roost in the end...on everyone or someone they love! Evil, is just not a strong enough word, at what has taken place since trump came on the scene!

@Freedompath We started down this path LONG before 45 showed up. This garbage started in the 70s, with Nixon. He was stopped, but then Saint Ronnie came along, and it's gotten progressively worse ever since.

As I said above, I don't think the election results in November are going
to matter. Even IF 45 loses the election, he's not going to leave, and the
republicans will get behind him and call "foul".
I have no faith in the "system" anymore.

It would be nice, and it would make me happy, but I have no expectations of it happening.

If we survive - we can never (or not for a long long time) allow ourselves to split or toss our votes over a lack of purity.. trump is nothing but a poster boy for the wealthy and their corporations to gain more power and wealth, this trial of trump(he has already been Impeached) is the first time in history a president actually committed treason for his Ukraine bribery attempt for own personal gain.

trump and the obstructionist republican fascist are outright guilty of removing and destroying our safeguards and protections earned over the last 242 years and further enhance by their outright disregard for our constitutional protections and rights!!!

Why is McConnell even being allowed to determine the rules?
John Roberts is in charge of the procedure.
Where in the constitution does it give the majority leader the power to determine these issues?

We're too far down the conservative rabbit hole at the moment.
Conservatives and capitalists are so entrenched in our power structures that even steps to unseat them have to have Wall Street and corporate underpinnings. People call Democrats the left but they have to play by the same money rules and it seriously harms all of us.

When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present.

Seems to me if the Chief Justice presides, that person would be in charge.

'Preside' is the operative term. The constitution gives the Senate the power.
They can overrule Roberts with a simple majority at any time (of course with the cameras rolling). The constitution says the Chief Justice will take the place of the Vice President for the Senate in impeachment proceedings. But that may mean as Rehnquist said in the Clinton trial -- do nothing but do it very well.
