I miss church. I really do. I miss the singing. I miss the fellowship. I miss having such a common sense of purpose. I've tried to fill that void with other things but nothing really scratches that itch. I've thought about finding a progressive congregation but that's even harder for me because you have to ignore so much of the Bible to believe in it and still have progressive values. I'm not sure the Unitarians would be a good fit for me either. I just wish I could find something with a built in community like you have at church.
Why are so many of you on Agnostic when you still seem to want "That Ol' Time Religion"? If you are troubled by your conscience, then go back to church. Nobody is twisting your arm!
This has nothing to do with conscience. Conscience keeps me away from church. This is about community.
@Tabor I guess that's why many people join organizations like Rotary, Masons etc. But they are also single-minded and didactic and have their rituals and oaths. People seem to have the need for companionship with those who have common beliefs. So I guess the Unitarians would be your most secular and open-minded but I am not familiar with their "services". If I felt the need for institutional camaraderie, I'd probably choose the Quakers. At least they are pacifistic and you don't have to listen to sermons!
And three chords my hind side.
The best rock is beautiful music.
But the cellos never caught fire! I love cello music. Our Freethinker group hired a cellist to play for our end of summer celebration by the river.
Hilarious!
Harvard Square, Catholic Church, High mass, ritual, choir, organ, incense. Way cool.
oh yeah.......occasionally I just love that hocus pocus. The beautiful stained glass windows and old architecture, lovely old hymns. And the priest, swinging the incense. And the reluctant Catholics, avoiding eye contact as they awkwardly shake hands and say "Peace be with You". It's high entertainment but I wouldn't want to do it every week.
Try Buddhism. Not all Buddhists are alike. Find the japanese sect: "Non Yo Ho Renghe kyo" (their chant). You might find a home there. I was part of them for a very long time. I loved them.
I had a friend who was one, he believed he could aquire anything, by chanting that chant enough and believing with his whole heart. Kinda like born agains preaching Prosperity Ministry.
@praytothemilkjug I never bought that, but there's more to them than that.
Perhaps, but his take away was , chant, get. I was doing my version of TM at the time, so I tried his chant, but never did I believe it would lead to money. Billy Graham and his ilk believe god gives those he chooses to get amazing lives and lotsa cash. Wealth wealth wealth that is what god gives some of the best.
Try a pagan group they have most better holidays.
but your withers get cold
with or without cloths?
Check out various UU's. Some are lay led and there is NO preaching of any kind - even in a general secular way. I (an atheist) am the president of the board of directors of mine in Prescott!!! I feel very at home there, we have all sorts of beliefs among the congregation and then even some with no beliefs.
Is it viable to start a church of intelligent thought? Create a physical community of Atheism who gather together to praise logic, scientific methodology.
Raise funds to help people etc. Just without the need to involve some strange invisible friend in the sky.
I think I have spent most of my life looking for a community please post again if you find one you are comfortable in.
@seenoevil9620 The military can be just as religiously oriented as any church and you pretty much under their control.
@seenoevil9620 clearly you have no clue who the hell I am, I've never actually watched Private Benjamin but I've seen some clips and found them hysterically close to home.
@seenoevil9620, @jlynn37 I think he was joking.
I found myself very much in the same situation some years ago, and I found a wonderful new community among area people playing music together, folk, traditional, bluegrass. You don't have to know how to play anything, just love music. You can bang along on whatever is within reach if you like, and of course sing along with anything you take a fancy too.
It was a nice discovery for me!
I too miss the fellowship But the control they want over you is overwhelming , like getting in to your sex life and other matters .
When I stopped going to church I found out how "shallow" that fellowship was, when nobody ever asked why or came to see me. I find more "fellowship" supporting my local football team, you can sing too if you like. Seriously there must be many social groups you can join where you will find people with similar interests, common sense of purpose etc. I don't feel comfortable attending church as I believe it all to be untrue, I only attend now for friends funerals etc. Good luck finding what you seek
Please give the UU church a try. It encourages everyone in their search for truth and meaning and provides a wonderful sense of community. There is an online service through Church of the Larger Fellowship on Sunday evenings. Worth looking into. I have been a UU for 20 years and wish I had found the faith sooner in my life.
Have you considered Toastmasters? I've found it to be fun and supportive, and as a bonus, your public speaking will improve!
Are there not other groups or communities besides churches that could fill that void? I never found church to be a pleasant or fulfilling experience or community. Once I was 18 and could make my own choices I left the church and never looked back. I didn't miss it at all and so it never left a void that I needed to fill, but I do understand the need for community. Perhaps there is a non-religious solution.
Many godless (Vonnegut among them), were fond of Unitarian Universalists. I attended many activist meetings in their church spaces. They're wonderfully inclusive.
You make your community. Why not volunteer? Sounds like you're bored and restless and volunteering for the needy (people, animals, etc) is good for your mind and soul.
Yes, Sunday assembly or a Freethinkers group. Better music more interesting people and rational discussions. Check your local meet up site for options. You have over two thousand Freethinkers meeting in Tucson. [meetup.com]
Is somebody forcing you to be an agnostic? Aren't you free to go back to church? If you were honest with yourself, you wouldn't miss all that.
Wow, you totally misunderstood what I was trying to say.
@Tabor I guess I did. So, do you think the only people affect piety and religious belief is for companionship? I Guess it's better than going out to bars. I suppose congeniality is a human need but, why can't we get together with others and share interest without having some didactic fool espousing their doctrine of division! Is that what you are saying?
