I’m jealous of all yawl on lockdown. Especially with the stimulus bill in the USA kicking in an extra 600 bucks a week. I have the misfortune of working in a supposedly essential industry. All kinds of ya just hanging out getting paid but I hafta keep working. Just ain’t fair.

In years to come I’ll be looking back and feeling salty that I had to work when most of the country got a vacation. So yawl better be enjoying it. 😉

My job is considered "essential" but they do not keep you around when there are no deliveries to be made. Tomorrow I go back to work after my week off and I'm scheduled for 2 days this week. This is the second time I have had a week off.

That sounds rough. Doesn’t working two days disqualify you for unemployment? In CA it’s 435 a week plus the 600 from the stimulus bill. It’d be pretty insulting to have to work two days and end up making less than you would have just staying off all week.

@JacobMeyers I believe you are correct. My workplace prides itself on never letting an employee draw unemployment. If they want to get rid of you they either fire you on the spot or cut your hours until you decide to leave them. In my state leaving this way would help you draw unemployment in time but these days there are no people in the office to talk to you. Maybe next month.

BTW, this is the job model of the future. Never full time, never any benefits, and control overall your permitted hours per pay period.

@DenoPenno yeah sad but true. I believe Walmart operates like that. At least the local one where I used to live had about 90% of their work forces at less than 32 hours a week to save on benefits. I can definitely see that becoming the norm like you say.

Sucks not being expendable, doesn't it? 😉

1of5 Level 8 Apr 9, 2020

or, being expendable. i think businesses are being classified as essential. that doesnt extend to people

Heh. For some personalities it does! One of my fav quotes is from the movie Idiocracy
The protagonist says something like “ I’m a good soldier I follow orders whenever the general said ‘lead, follow, or get out of the way, I tried to get out of the way.”

To everyone who got mad, sorry. This was totally posted with levity. I even put a winky at the end... did ya miss it? I guess I forgot none of you really know me and it would be easy to see by my choice of words I was joking if you did. That’s my mistake, truly sorry about that.

While it’s true I’m feeling this way it’s not a passion or burning anger or anything. At work we just make jokes about everyone out fishing. Although they are about to end that because ‘groups’ of people are fishing to close to each other.!

Wow, interesting perspective, and I get your resentment. It sucks to be forced to risk your heath/life for a nominal wage. If it makes you feel better, not everyone is eligible for the $600. In fact, this is a gig economy where a lot of people are just out of luck. I'm contract, and my work has been intermittent, off as much as it's on. Hardly a vacation. I'd much rather have the consistent work, and peace of mind. Thank you for your work, and hang in there. You're not alone.

Thank you. I never have and have never known anyone that gigs for a living. Even the bands I once hung out with had day jobs. That kinda thing wasn’t on my radar. Although I seem to remember reading about some form of relief for the self employed. Of course it would only be for those that filed tax returns and the amount of reliefs was commensurate with previous income claimed which might screw a few people. I don’t remember if that was a fed or state thing though. I hope it comes to pass that you too get compensated for being forced to not earn.

I'm extremely grateful to still be working. No stimulus check coming for me. If work shuts down, I just hope that I get back to drawing a paycheck before savings runs out.

If I made 6 figures I’d prolly wanna keep working too. Well no ,my time is more important than money. I’d still rather not work 😀 . Unless I was one of those people that work at something they would do for free if money was no object. I’m not that person though.

@MsAl

My friends are jealous because they miss going to work. My career is a vital part of who I am totally separate from the lifestyle it affords me.

There isn't enough money to make being stuck at home an enviable position for me.

Has anyone actually seen a check, yet? (too soon?). I am skeptical, but hope to be wrong. I won't see any, and neither will my now unemployed kids.

Zster Level 8 Apr 8, 2020

You’re unemployed kids should be able to easily get unemployment from your state and then the 600 weekly from the stimulus. Assuming they are taxpayers anyhow.

I have NOT got my 1200 yet.

I fee your pain

I’m working too, albeit from home. Last night I was just thinking how glad I am to be working because it keeps me productive and from being bored. It’s not much of a vacation if you can’t go out and do anything but shop for groceries.

Oh it’s not like that for me at all. There’s tons of interests I have that could keep me plenty busy. I also love the outdoors and contrary to the sentiment oft held here you most certainly can go outside. You are not confined to your home. If spring isnt here for you yet it soon will be. Go enjoy it!

I feel very fortunate to be still working. And my job is to help people keep their sanity and not go out and kill themselves by overdose. Those getting a stimulus payment will need it to keep their rent paid and their electric on.

Well you have your work. That’s different from (and better than) having a job. We aren’t all so lucky.

2

Yah I am also essential and actually make less than 600 a week so I'm a bit salty about it. Especially since I was in shutdown mode anyway before this happened my job is really awful now.

I'm not sure of a better althernative?.. Can't make the whole country homeless.

MsAl Level 8 Apr 8, 2020

Wow! Doing anything deemed essential should pay better, I would hope... I am sorry that the work has become awful, now.

@Zster many of those jobs deemed essential are min wage which by federal standards is 7.25hr or 290 a week. Mabey this will help us think a bit more about how much min wage should be.

Do you feel like you’re just getting the short end of the stick? I mean here we are continuing with drudgery of our jobs and being made more susceptible to a potentially deadly illness while others get to hide away in the comfort of their homes(or the great outdoors if they like) and they are going to paid for it. Totally not fair. I’m not really angry about it and my OP was written with some levity but still it irks me that others are being shown what feels like favoritism.
Are you in the kind of position they can force you to keep working in if a state of emergency is declared? Im really sorry your job is worse. That’s just extra suckage.
And no I don’t have any better alternative to offer unless when this is all over they pay US to stay home for a while. Not bloody likely though

1

You are lucky to have a job so stop whinging. On the other side many will be in debt, no job and destitute.

Your sense of privilege is astonishing. If you have an essential job get on and do it or give it up so someone else can do it with good grace!

I too was offended by the tone of this but can relate to it on some level.
It is a bit frustrating especially since most of the jobs are worse now and putting oneself at risk. Also for the min wage workers it's an extra slap in the face.
600 is 50% more than what they make at full time. I make significantly more than min wage in my nursing aid job and it's still less than that. Plus they cut out all the incentive pay when the emergency was declared so we're all making less.
I'm not quitting because that would be a shitty thing to do right now. But Fuck grace.

@MsAl In that case I stand corrected. Stay safe.

@Geoffrey51 The post made me mad too until I agreed with it. It's a bad situation and nobody is happy.

I stand corrected on the min wage part though. I was going off the $10hr estimate in my head because in michigan its 9 something currently.

Federal min wage is 7.25 which is 290 a week at 40 hrs. Mabey this will teach us all a little about what that actually means when a bunch of people go from 600 a week back to less than 300 at the end of this all...

Who’s gonna be in debt? The whole point was that everyone ( I’ve since learned it’s not everyone) is going to get to stay home from work and still get paid. For many of us the state unemployment plus the federal stimulus unemployment are going to be as much or more than we make working. In California it’s going to be about 4K take home per month. I would not only not go in debt but I’d have extra money. But instead I get to keep working to pay taxes so the fed can pay non essential workers to stay home.

I’m most def not republican ( or Democrat) but I am feeling their angst against gov hand outs. Although not with the same hatred to recipients. I’m not even mad it’s happening.I think we ALL deserve to stay home and get paid for it, not just the privileged few.

3

I am sure there are many that would exchange their stimulus for this thing to go away.

I’d kick in for that. If it was all fixed but I lost my 1200 check then so be it. It’d be a small price to pay to save the world.
