What would it be like if the whole world became an atheist?
Do you think it would be a better world?
I think as far as science goes, we would be far more advanced than what we are today. I think it would eliminate some "issues" but definitely not a drastic world change as some of us would like.
Not sure if it would be better but I would prefer having leaders that only expect to have this life they are living now with nothing to follow it only oblivion, because they won't be nearly as prone to risking their lives and mine believing that if they die in this one there's a better one right after. It short folks take far better care of things the know up front they are only ever going to halve ONE OF.
I think people's minds would finally be clear of mysticism, and religion, and the world and science could advance more rapidly, and find cures for diseases, and just basically advance faster because I have heard that religion slows human progress, people can be just as good without invisible gods that don't exist, they might even find a cure to slow the process of aging.
And perhaps stem cell research would be farther along and have found useful cures or medical advances without religious morals and religious politics getting in the way!
I agree about the life saving stem cell research, religion is against looking into that because of their beliefs.@demifeministgal
Most Atheist Countries 2020
Communist atheists waged a 70-year war on religious belief in the Soviet Union.
"In the long run, state atheism failed to convert many people. Religion strengthened underground and was revived to help fight the Second World War. It flourished after the fall of Communism. "
IMO it would be a better world without a God or religion. Religion divides people into opposing cults. Religion sucks a great amount of money into the building of churches which really serve no purpose to advance society. Of course....look at history.....religion spawns useless wars and the killing of heritics, homosexuals, and Atheists.
Indeed. How many have already died in the name of religion?
Only when the selfishness is lower or stopped!!!
The need to be not better than anyone else!!!
Having the actual want to help other individuals and creatures who need help with food, shelter, and Health!!!
That will separate the planet into a more friendly livable place, possibly???
There is already a lot of evidence on what happens in countries where religion declines and non-believers, Agnostics and atheists prevail. Western Europe is a good example. The decline of religion in Ireland, Scandinavia, France, Germany, Spain and other countries is always accompanied by a more tolerant and inclusive society. Respect for human rights, a reduction in extremist views including racism. Bigotry and extreme forms of nationalism find it so much harder to get a foothold in theses countries. The Jury is not out on this one. The evidence is overwhelming. Less religion equals a better world.
No Evangelical Christians promoting the death penalty for gay people in some Africa Countries.
No fatwa's on people from extreme muslims on people for having an opinion about something.
No Child rapists being protected by the Catholic Church.
OF COURSE the world would be a better place.
I don't think it would be much different. There are already other things that cause as much divide between people as religion and belief in God.
Imagine the scene from the Simpsons where lionel hutz asks to imagine a world without lawyers...
Good question! I think that not much would change. There are good and bad within all people.
Have you ever been to the Possum Lodge?
@PondartIncbendog Hi, no I have not seen this Possum Lodge. Is it on YouTube or is it a movie? May I ask what it is about?
I think so , and hopefully we won’t see any more incidents like Minnesota; that was absolutely unacceptable and uncalled for on the part of those 4 officers towards an innocent person.
If that were the only change (that people stopped subscribing to random myths as if they were fact),, then yes the world would indisputably be a better place. But the problem is reality does not bless any systemic change with such isolation and if this hypothetical were to be real, it is almost certainly attendant with correlated phenomena some of which may well be bad, and hard to say if they be worse than what subscription to myths is and produces.
For example, if the whole world were suddenly atheist (as in did not believe in mythical benefactors or agents as factual beings) but people maintained the full physiology that currently makes them credulous beings, then it's likely nothing would be gained, in fact things may easily get worse as their gullible nature and credulity is channeled towards manipulative, living, demagogues. It is well know that such demagogues (Hitler, Stalin and more) often win the following of many atheists.
Perhaps a more appealing question is "What would it be like if the whole world was equipped with great critical thinking skills and had the reflection skills to own their emotions not be owned by them?". That would bee easier. A much better place yes. With teething issues before we arrived at equitable production and consumption systems.
It won't happen. Why would I bother to comment on it?
But you just did,....
